JOHN T. SMITH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNA.
STEAM OR WATER PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,461, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed March 31, 1888.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN T. SMITH, of the cityand county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Steam or lVater Packing, to be known as the scribed as follows:
A packing` having a central core oi' suitable librous material saturated with a mixture of pulverized soapstone and flour in suitable pro i such as flax, hemp, or cottousatnrated with a preparation of pulverized` soapstone and flour, in proportions of four parts of pulver-ized soapstone to one part of tlour, the fibrous material thus saturated being firmly twisted in any size required. This central core is then wrapped, either lengthwise or diagonally, with strips of perforated rubber or cork, varying,` in thickness from one thirty-second to onehalf of an inch. Outside this rubber wrapping is wound diagonally any suitable fibrous material,in thickness from one thirty-second to three-eighths of an inch, or as may be required, this last also lubricated with a suitable proportion of soapstone and iiour, as above described. 'lo secure this packing and to complete it to the required size it is plated with a slack-twisted cord of any suitable fibrous material.
The packing may be made round or square, in sizes varying from one-fourth of an inch to two inches in diameter and in any required length.
To prepare this packingl for use in circles to suit any size of piston-rods, hc., it should be first dampened and rmly wound around a tube or mandrel of the required size, then SerialNo. 269,103. (No model.)
placed in a dryingI room until thoroughly dried, when upon being taken Afrom the tube or mandrel it will retain the form desired.
The accompanying drawings more fully explain the invention.
Figure l represents the coil as preparedtor its construction. Fig. 2 represents the transverse section of the same.
C is the central core of' fibrous material sat urated with a mixture of pulverized soapstone l and flour.
R is a perforated rubber or cork wrapping;I inclosing the central core, around which is wrapped (N) any suitable tibi-ons material wound diagonally and lubricated., above described, and F is the slack-twisted cord of fibrous material inelosing the whole.
In Figa?, C is the central core of fibrous material; r, the perforated rubber or cork wrapping; n, the fibrous wrapping,I outside of the rubber or cork; j', the outer cover, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new in construction, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A packing,` having a central core of suitable fibrous material saturated with a mixture of pulverized soapstone and iiour, as above described, the core being wrapped with perforated rubber or cork to allow the lubricant to pass from the central core to the outer covering, which is composed of a fibrous material saturated as above described, and the whole plated with a slack-twisted cord of suitable iibrous material, substantially the same as above described.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of illarch, A. D. 1888.
