To all rah-0112, it may c ncern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL Humans, of Snmmerville, county of Dorchester, and VIL- LIAM F. TAYLOR, of Charleston, county of Charleston, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing; and we do hereby declare the followingto bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in packing, the object of the invention being to provide an improved packing which will absorb and retain a large quantity of lubricant, the latter being used to saturate the separate strands before forming the packing, and, further, to provide a packing in which the primary strands are wound about with a wire or fiber and the core-strands not wound, but made soft and pliable to permit the primary strands to sink therein and shape the packing as desired.
With theseobjects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in section, illustrating our improvements in course of construction; Fig. 2, a similar view after compression into shape. Fig. 3 is a view in section of the finished packing. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views of a modification.
Our improved packing comprises a series of preferably eight primary strands I and core-strands 2. In the smaller sizes of packing, such as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, but four corner-cores 2 are provided, the packing being braided square in the ordinary way around the cores. In the larger forms of packing, such as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, a central core-strand 3 is provided in addition to the corner core-strands 2.
The strands l are composed of one or more hemp or other fiber strands first treated with P. lubricant, preferably oil and graphite, and braided together to form the strands 1. These strands lare wrapped with fine wire 4 or fiber, while the core-strands 2 and 3 are not wrapped at all and are preferably composed of ashestos or other fiber saturatedwith lubricant and are soft to yield to the primary strands 1 and permit the packing to shape itseifas desired. It will thus be seen that our improved packing consists of four or more soft core-strands saturated with lubricant and braided around with preferably eight pri mary strands wrapped with line wire or fiber, the individual strands comprising the primary strands being trcaii'ad with lubricant before formed into the primary strands, thus resulting in a packing which will contain a large amountof lubricant and owing to the unwrapped cores so shape itself to the machinery as to accomplish the g eatest possible usefulness.
A great many changes might. be made in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from our invention, and hence we would have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction setforth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spiritand scope of our invcu tion.
Having fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire in secure by Letters Parent, is-
1. A packing com nrising core-strands saiurated with lubric? and primary strands braided around th e ere-strands and also saturated with lubricant, said primary strands only individually wrapped with a' suitable protecting-strand.
2. Apacking,comprisingcore-strands saturated with lubricant, primary strands composed of one or more strands treated with lubricant before forming, and said primary strands braided around the core-strands and wire wrapping on thepriinary strands only.
3. The method of making packing, consistingin saturating core-strands with lubricant, saturating primary strands with lubricant, wrapping each of said primary strands with wire and braidin said core-strands with the primary strands.
