FLORENCE YOUNG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LADYS HAT-CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 26, 1909.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Serial No. 474,249.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Hat-Containers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes, holders or containers for ladies hats; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which when not in use occupies but small space and which may be conveniently used wherever required and especially on shipboard or other places where it is designed to protect ladies hats from moisture; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. I
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hat container or holder showing the device closed, Fig. 2 a similar view showing the device open, Fig. 3 a top or front view of the device as when not in use, and ;Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 44 of Fig. 3 and showing the device in use.
My improved hat container or holder comprises a box-shaped bottom or back member a and a top or front member I) hinged together at one side in any desired manner. The back or bottom a comprises a back side a and a rim portion 0. having an inwardly set flange a, and the top or front part b is band-shaped in form and adapted to closely fit the flange a, and secured in or to the top or front member I) is a bag-shaped device 12 composed of any suitable flexible material or fabric preferably oiled silk or some such material that will exclude both moisture and air, and the bag-shaped device 6 is adapted to be folded into the box portion of the device as shown in Fig. 3 when not in use.
Secured within the back or the bottom a of my improved hat container is a cushion c to which a hat (1 may be secured by means of a pin or pins (P, and the bag portion 6 is adapted to partly inclose and protect the hat no matter how large or of what variety said hat or trimmings may be.
My improved hat container is also designed to be suspened from a suitable support in a closet, cupboard or similar place or by means of a nail or hook secured to a door, wallor other support, and for this purpose the back or bottom portion a is provided opposite the hinge by which the top or front I) is connected with said back or bottom portion with a loop-shaped device or handle 6, but it will be understod that the said container may be placed in a drawer or on a table, shelf or other support, in which event the part e may serve as a handle for carrying the device.
The separate parts a and b may also be provided on the side opposite the hinge by which they are connected as at f with a hook and eye catch or any other suitable device for holding said arts together, but the top or front portion may be made to closely fit the lower part of the back or bottom portion a in such manner that said parts will be held together by friction.
In the accompanying drawing my improved hat container is shown as substantially square in form, the corners thereof being rounded, but any suitable shape such as round or octagonal may be adapted.
When the device is suspended by means of the loop or handle e it is not necessary to remove it in order to place a hat therein or remove the hat therefrom, all that is necessary being to let down the top or front part as shown in Fig. 2.
My invention is not limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
The bottom or back member and the front or top member are also connected by a flexible strap 9 which supports said top or front member when in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The hinge by which the back or bottom and front or top members are connected, in the construction shown, consists of a flexible strip h pasted to said parts, but any suitable hinge may be employed.
In addition to serve for the purposes herein specified my improved hat container may be used in stores for protecting hats from dust, dirt and the like, and will also serve as convenient means for displaying hats, and for this purpose it may be suspended from. a wall or other support or placed on a counter or on shelves prepared for this purpose.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A hat container comprising a main box member open at one side, and a band device hinged thereto and provided With a flexible inclosing bag which is secured thereto and adapted to close the main boX member.
2. A hat container comprising a main boX member open at one side, and a band device hinged thereto and provided With a flexible inclosing bag Which is secured thereto and adapted to close the main box member, and the main box member being provided with a pad.
3. A hat container comprisin a main box member open at one side, and a band device hinged thereto and provided with a flexible inclosing bar which is secured thereto and adapted to cIose the main box member, and the main box member being provided with a pad, and opposite the hinge of the band device With a handle.
4. A hat container comprising a main box member open at one side, and a band device hinged thereto and provided with a flexible inelosing bag which is secured thereto and adapted to close the main box member, said main box member being also provided opposite the hinge oi' the band device with a handle and suspending device.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 23rd day of January 1909.
FLORENCE YOUNG.
