r To. all whom it may concern:
' Chicago, county' of Cook, and :State of Illino1s, have invented pertain new anduseful. 1 Improvements in Display Boxes, of which.
I do declare the following to be a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying "drawing, forming a part of thisspecification. 1' v Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display box embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a View in elevation showing my invention in slightly modified form.
The present invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of box orvcontainer for such articles as mens garters, whereby the articles may be attractively displayed upon store counters or in like situations. The invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of'this specification.
In the drawing, A designates the body of the box that may be of convenient size and shape to receive a number of individual boxes B, each adapted to hold a single'pair of garters. C designates the cover of the box that may be hinged to the body A at one side, a suitable form of stop device D being employed to limit the movement of the cover C and hold the same in approximately vertical position.
The cover C of the box is formedwith an opening. 0, across which one'of the garters E to be displayed will be held in extended position. At each side of the opening 0 are formed slots 0 through which the band or webbing e of the garter E will be passed, these slots 0' beingdiagona'lly disposed as shown in the drawing. In the preferred. embodiment of the invention, the diagonal slots 0' formed in the cover C are connected" with the opening 0 by means of the slots 0 these slots 0 permitting the garter E to be morereadily inserted into the slots 0'.
Subjacent the bottom of the opening a is formed a hole 0 that extends through the cover C. The purpose of this hole 0 is to permit the button 6 of the garter E to be passed therethrough from one side of the cover C, so that the head of the button 6 after it has been passed through the hole .0 may be engaged by the button loop 6 of the garter E. The button 6 and the button Belt known that I, CLARENCEYE. HEATON, acltizen of the United States, residing in.

garter E, the button 6" being carried by a those familiar with mens garters? of Lthis In arranging a garter E upon the cover button tab 6 andthe buttonloop c beingof the box C (when the cover. Cis' provided v with, slots 0 and c theband e of the'garter will be passed through the slots 0 and into the slots 0, in the position shown inF-ig,
lot the drawing, the cast-off loop-e being at such, time engaged with a'stud e in the usual manner. The button 6 will be passed through the hole 0 in the cover C, after which the button loop 5 will be slipped over the button 6' until the button and loop are. in the relative position shown in the drawing. When the garterE is thus arranged upon the cover -C, the garter will be held in distended position so as toeffectively dis-I play it without any undue strain upon the parts, and in a position approximating that which the garter would have in use upon a wearers leg.
effectively and attractively displayed.
Garters of the type illustrated in the drawing are frequently formed of a single band of wide elastic webbing, the ends of .whichare cut diagonally and connected at the front of the garter, at which point the the garters are formed with cast-off loops end-studs, I prefer to employ the connecting slots 0 as these slots enable the garters to be more readily placedin position upon When thus in position upon the cover C of the-box, the garter is most as p the cover C. By reference to Fig, 2 of the drawing, it willbe seen, however, that the slots (3 are not necessary when the garter E is provided with a cast-off loop and stud e and 6 since with such type of garter the band 6 of the garter can be readily threaded through the'diagonal slots 0, The. portions of the cover between the diagonal slots 0 and the opening 0 constiv tutesupports for the body portion of the sock-engaging button and loop are arno i i garter and the portion of the cover between the hole 0 and the opening 0 form a support for the sock-engaging members of the garter. While I prefer to form the several supports in the manner above described, said supports may be otherwise formed to display the garter in extended position without departing from the broad scope of the invention.
So far as I am aware my invention presents the first instance of a display box having a cover or part provided with oppositely disposed, diagonal supports for the body of a garter and with an adjacent support for the sock-engaging member of the garter, whereby the garter may be oisplayed without undue strain in approximately the position assumed by such parts when in use upon a wearers leg.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure.
by Letters Patent is:-
1. Means for displaying garters comprising a flat part having in its upper portion slots placed at adistance apart through which slots the leg band of the garter may opening therein,
pass and having at a distance below said slots a hole to admit the button of; the garter tab, and having also a relatively large opening above said hole and between said slots, through which opening the body of the garter may be exposed and through which the button loop of the garter may be passed to enable said loop to engage said button.
2. A display box of the character described having a part formed with an opening therein and having slots at opposite sides of said opening to admit the leg band of the garter and having also slots extending between said first mentioned slots and said opening to permit the leg band to be passed therethrough and having below the bottom of said opening a hole to receive the sockengaging member of the garter, to hold the garter in distended position.
3. A display box of the character described, having a cover formed with an and having diagonally arranged slots at opposite sides of said opening and having slots connecting said diagonally arranged slots with said opening.
