Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. EssIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device for Size-lvfarking Boot and Shoe Soles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a form member of a sole-rounding device having means adapted for removably holding a size-marking die thereon, the side of said member being provided with a recess which admits access to certain of the parts which hold the die.

For the purpose of explaning my invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a device for size-marking a boot or shoe sole embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section. on line x:r, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of one of the dies employed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings :A designates a sole pattern usually made of wood, and B designates a form usually made of iron or other metal. Between said pattern and form is placed the sole C, which is to be rounded in the usual manner.

In the form B is an opening D, which is occupied. b the die E, the face of which has a size-mark thereon, said face being on the inner side of the form so as to'contact with the leather or sole C, it being evident that when the form and pattern are subjected to pressure in order to hold the sole firmly between the same, animpression of the die is made on the sole, thus indicating the size or size-number of the sole.

The pattern A is similarly provided with die G of the character of the die E so that both sides of a sole may be size-marked, but it is evident that if a die is applied only to one member, either the pattern or the die,

the sole after being size-marked on one face may be inverted and size-marked on the other face.

The die has on its sides the shoulder E, which'engages with a shoulder in the opening D to prevent outward displacement of the die, while, in order to prevent inward displacement of the same, an opening H is made in either member to receive the pin or bolt J, said opening extending at a right angle to the opening D, said pin having the head portion of the shank passed freely through an open slot or bifurcation K in one end of a springL, which other end is secured to the side of the member as at M, it being noticed that the point of the pin J freely enters a depression N in the side of the die and presses against the same, thus locking the die and preventing improper disconnection of the same from the member to which it is applied.

The side of the member B is cut away forming the recess P, in which the spring and head of the pin or bolt have their play, while being prevented from projecting beyond the edge of said member and also admitting proper access to said parts, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1, while the continuity of the side of the form is preserved for solerounding purposes.

The pin or bolt may be easily disconnected from the; open slot of the spring and withdrawn, thus permitting the removal of the die and the substitution of the latter by one of a different size-face.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- In a sole-rounding device, a pattern member and a form member, the form member having therein an opening, a passage which extends laterally from said opening, and a recess in its side in communication with said passage, a removable die in said opening, a pin in said passage adapted to engage said die, and a spring in said recess, the head of said pin occupying said recess and being adapted. to he rcmovably engaged by said spring, said head being adapted to have its playin said recess and being accessible thereat.
