Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, ELMER FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand stamps and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for the purpose of canceling letters, postcards and the like.

An object of this invention is the production of a novel connection between the die and its handle whereby the same will be held at all times in an operative position and in which provision is made for the equalization of pressure upon 'the die in order to insure a clear and distinct impression.

A further object of this invention is to construct a device of the class mention-ed having a detachable handle which can be very quickly removed and applied to different dies.

A still further object is the production of a hand stamp which will be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view through my improved hand stamp. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view taken through a modified form of my invention.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a die of any shape and size necessary to accommodate the matter to be printed, and 2 the handle which may be of any desired construction and being preferably of a shape which can be conveniently grasped by the hand of the operator.

A threaded stud 3 is seated within a recess formed in the lower end of the handle 2 and is provided with a reduced depending ball. The shell 6 is provided with a flattened face 8 which prevents its turning within a socket 6 of corresponding shape, located centrally of the die, in which it is adapted to be seated.

A set screw 9 is adjustable longitudinally of a threaded opening 10 which communicates with the socket 6 and is adapted to contact with the upper edge of the shell 6, which will be slightly reduced by the crimping and prevent any undesired displacement of the same.

A coil spring 11 surrounds the stem 1 and bears against the crimped upper edge 7 of the shell and the stud 3 and normally holds the handle 2 perpendicular to the plane of the die.

Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawing, in which a slight modification of my invention is illustrated, an aperture 12 is located in the shell 6, in alinement with the aperture 10, through which the set screw 9 may be extended to contact with the ball 5 and regulate the movement of the same.

From the foregoing disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is evident that a hand stamp is provided which will answer all of the necessary requirements.

Having thus fully described this invention what is claimed as new is:

1. The combination with a die provided with a centrally located cup shaped pocket, of a handle having a stud embedded in the end thereof, a reduced stem extending integrally from the stud, a ball formed upon the end of the stem, a cup shaped shell enveloping the ball and having its upper edge crimped inwardly against the ball to prevent the removal of the same, the said shell also being provided with a flattened face adapted to engage a flattened face formed in the wall of the pocket, a set screw ex tending through a threaded recess formed in the die, into the pocket and operating to prevent the removal of the ball from the said pocket, and a spring surrounding the stem with its opposite ends bearing against the crimped edge of the shell and the stud and adapted to hold the handle in an opera tive posit-ion.

2. A hand stamp combining a die provided with a centrally located cup shaped pocket having a flattened ofiset wall, a handle having a stud embedded in the end thereof, a reduced stem extending integrally from the stud, a ball formed upon the lower through an alining opening formed in the shell and against the ball and operating to prevent the removal of the ball from the said pocket.
