LAURENCE MYERS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-STAN! P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,012, dated February 24:, 1885.
Application filed October 13, 1852. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE MYERs, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hand-stamps; and it consists in the combination of the handle provided with sockets in its lower ends with a metallic screw-threaded socket, the cutter provided with a shank, the inking-pads, and a spring, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention isto provide an implement which will ink and lacerate the face of the stamp at the same time, and thus prevent the stamp from ever being used again.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a series of forms of cancellation.
A represents the handle, which has formed in its lower end, B, the double socket b C.
Inthe upper end of the larger socket, O, is placed the spring J, of rubber or other suitable material, so as to serve as a cushion for the cup-piece I. This cup piece is made' smooth 011 its outer sides, so as to have a slight endwise movement when a stamp is struck, and thus allow the cutter to give and not penetrate the letter or envelope.
That portion 2' of the cup-piece which fits in the smaller socket, b, has an internal screwthread, so as to receive the screw-shank F of the cutter E.
Between the outer side of the cutter and inner side of the socket U is placed a. rubber inking-pad, H, which is held in place by its own expansion, and which serves to keep the cutter also in place. The bevel on the lower end of the knife allows the lower end of this pad to expand laterally when a stamp is struck. Inside of the cutter is placed a second rubber pad, which has its lower end reduced in size, so that it can also expand laterally. These two pads serve to ink the stamp at the same time that the cutter laeerates the face of the stamp.
There may be different forms of cutters-and the shape of the central pad, G, may be varied, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the handle A, provided with the double socket C b, with the cup-piece I i, cutter E, pads H G, and spring J, substantially as shown.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
LAURENCE MYERS.
