Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. CHARLES TYSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF' HIS RIGHT TO REX & BOCKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
-IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-JACKS.
Specification forming part ofLettcrs Patent No. 209,091, dated October 15, 1878; application filed August 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CHARLES TYsoN, of the jack embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof in line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section in line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a boot-jack having its jaws faced with rubber or other elastic material, which is fitted in a groove there in, whereby the facing will be securely held in position by the walls of the groove without other means of fastening.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a boot-jack, whose tread a, feet I), and jaw c are preferably formed of cast metal. On the inner face of the jaw 0 there is a groove, A, into which will be inserted and fitted a piece, B, of rubber or other elastic material, which, in the present case, is of cylindrical form in crosssection, so as to conform to the shape of the groove, and the thickness or diameter of the piece is such that a portion of the face of the piece projects beyond the walls of the groove, so that there is formed an elastic facing, which providesa firm hold for the heel of the boot or shoe, and prevents slip thereof. The upper and lower ends of the walls of the grooves A overhang the piece B, as at d, and thus provide means for securely holding the piece in position.
It will be seen thatthe elastic face fits snugly in the groove, and it cannot be withdrawn. therefrom when in service, as the pressure will force the piece of rubber deeper into the groove, which action is, however, restrained by the overhanging walls of the groove, and thus escape or displacement of the piece is prevented. Moreover, nailing or other objectionable fastening is obviated, and when the elastic face is worn it may be removed, and a fresh piece of material readily applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boot-jack having grooved jaws adapted to receive and hold an elastic facing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES TYSON.
Witnesses:
JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, A. P. GRANT.
It is hereby certified that the name 0f the assignee in i terest in these Letters Patent, as stated in the Letters Patent proper and in the caption of the annexed printed 1 specification, should be BOOKIUS, and not BOCKINS, to agree with the original deed of assignment. 5
