UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ROLLHA'US, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOQT O R SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,359, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed October 1, 1881. Renewed September 21, 1883. (Mo'deL) To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ROLLHAUS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of boots and shoes; and it consists in making the heels and shanks in one piece, of either iron or other suitable metal, and securing them by screws to a metallic plate inside the boot or shoe, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention. I Figure 1 represents the heel and shank, cast in one piece; Fig. 2, the heel, shank, and up per, combined with a metal plate for the inside of the boot or shoe; Fig. 3, serew-plates,with buttons for attaching the heel and shank.
The metallic heel A is cast hollow, of any desired shape, and with it, attached thereto, is cast the shank B, formed to suit the kind and size of shoes or boots to which it is to be applied. At the bottom of the heel, and also in the shank, are screw-holes for screws that hold the heel and shank to a thin metallic plate, 0, that fits the inside of the shoe, reachingfrom the heel to the end of the shank. The
plate 0, instead of having holes for the insertion of screws from underneath, has slots to allow a forward or backward adjustment, and
the screws enter into loose screw-plates a over the slots, to which are attached, underneath the plate 0, buttons or knobs-b, on which the plate 0 rests. In the space thus formed by the intervening buttons, between the shank 5 and the plate 0, the quarter and part of the vamp of the shoe or boot are introduced and held when the screws are tightened. By this means the heel and shank are securely attached to the boot or 'shoe, and may be removed or renewed when necessary. On the plate 0 is placed the insole of the shoe, and to prevent unevenness the under side of the insole is cut away over the slotsand screwplates at.
My improvement is adaptable to all kinds of shoes or boots by varying the size, shape, and thickness of its material. my invention is to simplify and reduce the cost of the manufacture of boots and shoes and to make them more serviceable by substituting metal for leather and byintrodueing a rigid shank that prevents the wearing off of the sole at the side. The time required for making and polishing'heels may be saved by the adoption of my invention. Consequently,
The object of aside from the difference in the cost of the material, money is saved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- V 1. The inside plate, 0, in combination with the heel A and shank B, fastened together, as hereinbefore described.
2. The combination of the heel, shank, and
