l HARRY ZIMMERMAN, OF FREMONT, OHI.
SHUTTER-BOWERL No. 921,7e5.
To all whom it may concerns,
Beit known that I, HARRY ZIMMRMAN, a 5 l* citizen of the United States, residing at Fre- Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application led November 6, 1907.
Patented Mayie, ieee. Serial No. 401,024.
i openings of the boeing opening series as in mont, in the county` ofSandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Shutter Bowers, of which t e following' is a specification.
y invention relates to shutter bowers, and more especially to the sill plateand locking devices, and consists in constructing these parte as fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying draa ing, Iin which,`
Figure l is a perspective View of asill plate embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectionon, the line 2 2 Fig. 1 Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 8 are erspective views showingthe sill `plates of liferent forms; Fig: G'is a lan in partseetion showing a sill 'plate and ockinfr devices arranged on a sill and shutter; and
` Flg. 7 is a vertical section of the locking 8, 8,' and `t sad bracket. 1
An embodiment of my invention in a siniple form is illustrated in Fig. 5 where, as in the other. ures, the sill plate A is made from a sing e piece Aof sheet metal n ith an elevated bridge having at the top a series of bowin holes or sockets 3, a lookin hole 5 at one si e of the linel of bon ing ho es, and a lateral extension 7 with an incline 10.
In the construction of Fig. 5 the plate is punched. to make the sockets and is slit so that it ma be bent' to forni the side flanges e incline 10, and as this can be onewitha punch and 4Hanging machine, and dies are not required, the construction is a cheap one".v Preferably, however, the sheet of `metal from which the sill late is to be made is stamped u to forin tiie bridge, extension, and side anges to the bridge, and also connected side iianges 12 to the extension all in one continuous piece, whereby the flanges 'of the extension not only impart-rigidity thereto, but by their connection to those of the bridge, brace and support the latter. Such strength and rigidity is thus secured that much lighter material than otherwise needed may be used, and the cost of manufacture reduce Some ofthe features of my invention hereinafter referred to may however' be secured if the artiolle of the shape described is made oi cast metal. Any sultable means ma be employed to connect the sill plate to t e sill. ln some` cases the screws z niay be inserted in the terminal 1g. 5, but l prefer to extend the plate to forni a base portion 15 `which may be 1n the form of r. ings asin Figs. 1, 3 and 6, or cars as i in Figs. 4 and 8, such portions having lperforations 16 for the reception of the securing The sill plate in place on the sill 'Y as shown in Fig. 6 1s used in connection with a brace rod 'D pivoted to a bracket B attached,
warping of the shutter, the latter cannot be fully c osed, but the additional looking socket-5l erinits the shutter to be locked in its slight y open position. inasmuch however as the slight o ening of the shutter shifts the longitudina position of the brace rod, the socket 5 is elongated and the open.- ing w in the tongue 19 elongated to permit the lookinor effect to be secured.
While the extension 7 may be at one side 'the 'center or adjacent to one end of the sill plate, as in Figs. 4 and 8, I refer to arrange it in the center as shown in igs. 1, 3, 5 and 6, and it will be seen that the center bowing socket with two on either side constitute a series of three which gives all needed bowin adjustments of the-shutter, the two termina sockets at one end being utilized when the sill late is used with one shutter, and those at tie other end being utilized when the sill plate is used with the other shutter. To secure the shutter in its position against the wall l use a separate sill plate l stamped up of a single plate with perforated ears to receive the retaining screws.
' To avoid the necessity of supplying a se arate holder to support the brace rod adjacent to the shutter when the rod is not in active use, I so form the tongue 19 as to secure a shelf 20 adjacent to the openimJP w, the hook ofthe brace rod resting on this slhelf and being prevented from being displaced b a surrounds ing rib or shoulder o: This do not here" claim as it forms the subject of a separate and to 'prevent its displacement applications for Letters Patent Nos. 847,531,
400,653, 400,654 and 400,865.
Without limiting myself to the construetion and arrangementshown, I elaine:
' LA sill plete consistin of'a single sheet of malleable metal forme into'fin elevated bridge With sockets and side ilenges, and e lateral extension with e socket end en inclined fece, es set forth.
y 2. A sill plate consisting of e single sheet of metal bent up to form e bridge,l end e lateral extension with an inclined l'a-ee, the
bridge sind extension having dependent flanges connected with each other.
3. A sill plete consisting of e single sheet of malleable metal formed into en elevated bridge with sockets :ind side Menges, end :i lateral extension with en inclined ieee and e bese portion between the extension end bridge portions and with perforetions I'or screws, es set forth.
4. A sill plete having` en elevated bridge portion and en inclined extension :it one side, end e series of bowing sockets in line with each other et the top of thev bridge portion and en elongated locking soeket in the top of the extension et one side of one of those on the bridge and between the letter end the incline of the extension.
In testimony whereoic I eilix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY ZIMMERMAN.
