DISPLAY-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed July 19, 1907. Serial No. 384,616.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, EDWARD In. CARNES, a
Illinois have invented new and useful Improvement in Display-Receptacles, of which the tollomng is a specilication.
cans or boxes for candies and other articles.
T he obj eet of my invention is to provide a sheet metal display can or box suitable for shipment, display and dispensing of candies, which will be of a strong, simple, e'l'l'icient, and durable construction, which will be coinposed of two parts, may be cheaply manufactured, in which the glass plate will be removable so that it can be conveniently cleaned, in which the candies will be suitably displayed to the eye whether the person he a child or a grown person, and from which the candies may be conveniently removed without disturbing the portion thereof immediately adjacent to the glass or display plate and thus interfering with the attractive appearance of the can or box.
My invention consists in the means I einplov and herein shown and describe for practicaily accomplishing this object or result.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specilication, Figure l. is a perspective view of a candy display can or box embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3-3 of Fig. g Fig. el is a vertical section on line fi-fl. of Fig. 2, and llig. 5 is a rear elevation.
In the drawing A represents the bottoni of the can or box, A1 its upright sides, preferably integral with the bottoni, B the top plate, C the inclined reinovalt-le glass front or display plate, D the hinged cover overlappingl the upper edge of the inclined display plate, E the back plate and F the hinged dooi' closing the dispensing opening Il11 at the rear end or back of the box.
rlhe bottom plate A has an integral upwardly and rearwardly inclined guide o furnished with a beveled edge al and fold a2 for the lower edge of the inclined front or display plate O to abut against. And the upright sides A1 of the box are furnished with integral inclined guides a3 having beveled edges a4 and. `folds a5 to overlap the side edges of the inclined glass plate C. The upright sides A1 of the box are further provided with inclined supports or guides G, lpreferably soldered thereto to hold the inclined glass plate C securely in place. Each ofthe glass holding guides Gpreferably has a right angle flange i g and L falded edge g1 to give a smooth edge My invention relates to sheet metal display thereto and prevent danger of injury to the lingers in removing and Yreplacing the glass plate C; The top plate B is provided at its lront end with an inclined integral guide or support l) llush with the inclined side guides G G, and having a fold?)l at its lower edge to give the saine a smooth hnish. T he hinged cover D which closes the upper end ol the slot or passage through which the glass plate C is inserted and removed, has a hi'rrizontal member d parallel with the top plate B and an inclinedv member d1 having a beveled edge d2 and fold d3 corresponding to the inclined guides d and cr" on the bottoni A and 'upright sides A1. The cover l) is connected by hinge straps d4 and hinge pin d5 with the top plate B, so that the cover D overlaps the inclined guides a3 on the upright sides A1 of the box. rPhe top plate B has seaming llanges b2 at its longitudinal edges interfolded with the vflanges as on the upright sides A1 into a folded seam b3 uniting the top plate with the upright side plates A1. The end plate E has at its lower edge an inwardly projecting flange c and a downwardly projecting flange e1 having a fold e2 at its lower edge to form a seat for the upper edge of the door to abut against and to stillen the end plate and adapt it to properly support the door button or fastener H, which is pivotally secured to the end plate E by a rivet h. rlhe back or rear end plate E has a il'lange c3 at its upper edge interlolded with the llange t* at the rear end edge of the top plate B to secure the end plate and top plate together. rl`he upright sides A1 of the box at their rear ends arc furnished with folds a7 to stillen the saine and give a smooth linish to the surrounding walls of the dispensing opening F1 in the rear end of the can. At the ends the back late E is furnished with inwardly projecting ll anges c4, fitting within and soldered to the end of the bottom plate A by hinged strapsf fYl projecting ilange f3 having a fold f4. ne
hinged door F is provided with side wings F2 F2, preferably of triangular shape and furnished with :folded edges f to stiilen the same and give a smooth 'finish thereto. The side wing-s 'F2 of the door, by engagement with .the lower edge ofthe back or end plate E serve as stops to lim-it the opening movement'of thedoor F, and also to prevent spilling of the candies when the door is swung downward into its open position. The Aside wings F2 are `preferably made in separate pieces from the hinged door F, and secured thereto by solder lor other means. The ihinged door F is furnished with flanges 25 f7 .at its side edges .provided with foldsfs.
As my improved candy display box .has a long body with fiat bottom .and top, and an inclined glass -front., a number of the boxes are adapted to be placed one on top of another on the counter of the store, the boxes being stepped slightly one back of another, so that their inclined fronts may be continuations of each other. rFhe contents of the can may -be readily seen Whether the person is tall or short, a child, for example may look horizontally `into the box., While a tailler person looks more lor less downwardly into it.
r'llhe `door F -is provided with a handle ring 40 F3 for opening and closing it.
l claim:
1. A sheet metal can or 4box having a bottom and upright sides furnished With integral -inclined guides to engage the lower edge and side edges of a removable.glass plate, inclined side guides secured to said upright sides to support the glass plate, and a top plate having an inclined support at its front end for the upper edge of the glass plate, substantially as specified.
2. A sheet metal-can or box having a bottom and upright sides furnished with integral inclined guides to engage the lower edge and side edges of a lremovable glass plate, inclined side guides secured to said upright sides to support the glass plate, a top plate having :an inclined support at its front end for fthe upper `edge of the glass plate, and a cover hinged at the front end of said top plate and overlapping the upper edge of the glass plate, substantially as specified.
3. A sheet metal can or box having a bottom and upright sides furnished with integral inclined vguides to engage the lower edge and side edges of a removable glass plate7 inclined side guides secured to said upright sides to support the glass plate, an inclined removable glass plate, a hinged cov-er overlapping the vupper edge of the glass plate, said integral inclined guides on the bottom and upright sides having inturned beveled edges furnished with folds, and said hinged cover having a beveled lower edge furnished with `a fold, substantially as specified.
