Description
BOXES AND BLANKS FOR BOXES
The invention relates to boxes and blanks for boxes.
It is often convenient, particularly in the case of boxes which are made of cardboard, to construct boxes from blanks. A blank is formed from a sheet of material which is divided into a number of panels by fold lines, the fold lines being arranged to enable the blank to form a container when folded along its fold lines.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a box constructed from a blank, the box comprising a base, two side walls, a rear wall, a front portion, andiXa !a lid, the lid being pivotally connected to the rear wall so as to be moveable between open and closed positions in which it respectively opens and closes the top of the box, the front portion being pivotally connected to the base so as to be moveable between open and closed positions in which it respectively opens and closes the front of the box, and the lid being adapted to retain the front portion in its closed position when the lid is in its closed position.
The front portion may have two side flaps adapted to slide respectively into the two side walls when the front portion is moved to its closed position, and to slide out of the two side walls when the front portion is moved to its open position.
This has the advantage of providing the front portion with a greater structural rigidity when in its closed position. Furthermore, friction between the side walls and the side flaps may ensure that the front portion remains in its closed position until it is moved by a user to its open position.
Preferably, the lid comprises a downwardly projecting portion which overlaps at least a part of the front portion when the lid and the front portion are in their closed positions, so as to retain the front portion in its closed position.
1
The downwardly projecting portion may also extend along the sides of the lid so as to overlap at least a portion of each of the side walls when the lid is in its closed position. This provides the lid with a greater structural rigidity, particularly when in its closed position.
Preferably, when the front portion is in its open position it is adapted to allow the contents of the box to be slid smoothly into and out of the front of the box.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a box as described above in combination with an inner sliding part comprising a contents supporting part adapted to support the contents of the box, and a handle part adapted to be gripped by the user to enable the user to slide the sliding part, and hence the contents of the box, into and out of the front of the box.
Such an arrangement is particularly suitable for cakes which require to be kept upright, and on a generally horizontal surface.
The contents supporting part and handle part are conveniently formed from a single piece of sheetlike material.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a blank for constructing a box as described above, the blank comprising a base panel, a lid panel, a rear wall panel, a front portion panel, and two side wall panels, the base panel being connected by fold lines to the rear wall panel, the front portion panel, and the two side wall panels, and the lid panel being connected by a fold line to the rear wall panel.
Preferably, each of the side wall panels is connected by at least one fold line to a respective side wall tab adapted to overlap at least a part of its respective side wall panel when the box is constructed.
In this case, the front portion panel may be connected by fold lines to two side flaps, each of which is adapted to slide between a respective side wall panel and its associated side wall tab when the front portion is moved between its open and closed positions.
Each side flap may be formed with a curved edge which extends along the arc of a circle having a radius substantially equal to the height of the side walls of the box.
Preferably, each of the side wall panels is connected by two, closely spaced, parallel fold lines to its respective side wall tab.
Conveniently, each side wall tab comprises a projecting portion, and the base panel is provided with two slots for receiving and retaining said projecting portions when the side wall tabs are folded so as to overlap their respective side wall panels.
Desirably, the rear wall panel is connected by fold lines to two rear wall tabs, each of which is adapted to be retained between a respective side wall panel and its associated side wall tab in order to support the rear wall panel in an upright position.
Preferably, the lid is connected by fold lines to two lid side panels, each of which is connected by at least one fold line to a respective lid tab adapted to overlap at least a part of its respective lid side panel when the box is constructed.
In this case, the lid panel may be connected by a fold line to a lid front panel which is connected by fold lines to two lid front tabs, each of which is adapted to be retained between a respective lid side panel and its associated lid tab, in order to support the lid front panel.
Preferably,' each lid side panel is tapered at its end nearest the rear wall panel. This has the advantage that the lid side panels lie well clear of the opening at the top of the box when the lid is fully opened.
Conveniently, each of the lid side panels is connected by two, closely spaced, parallel fold lines to its respective lid tab.
Advantageously, each lid tab comprises a lid tab projecting portion, and the lid panel is provided with two slots for receiving and retaining said lid panel projecting portions when the lid tabs are folded so as to overlap their respective lid side panels.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box;
Figure 2 shows a sliding part for use with the box of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 shows a blank used to construct the box of Figure 1.
The box l-comprises two side walls 2, a rear wall 4, a front portion 6, a lid 8, and a base portion (which is not visible in Figure 1). The lid 8 and front portion 6 are both moveable between open and closed positions, and are shown in Figure 1 in partially open positions.
The side walls 2 are of double thickness, and the front portion 6 is provided with two side flaps 10 which slide into the side walls 2 when the front portion 6 is closed. The lid 8 is provided with a downwardly projecting flange 12 which, when the lid 8 is closed, overlaps the top of the side walls 2 and the top of the front portion 6 so as to retain the front portion 6 in its closed position.
Figure 2 shows a sliding part 14, formed from a single piece of rectangular cardboard, which is divided by a fold line 16 into a contents supporting part 18 and a gripping part 20. The contents support part 18 is of substantially the same size and shape as the base of the box, and in use fits within the bottom of the box in order to support the contents thereof.
The box is opened by lifting and folding back the lid 8, and then pulling the front portion 6 down into a horizontal position. The sliding part 14 may then be gripped by the gripping part 20 in order to slide the sliding put 14, and hence also the contents of the box, over the front portion 6 and out of the front of the box. The box is particulary suitable for cakes, such as wedding cakes, which can be simply and easily removed from the box without being tilted, and also without the need to pass one's hands between the side walls 2 of the box and the cake in order to lift the cake out of the box.
The box is formed entirely from a blank 22 made from a single piece of cardboard which is separated into panels by fold lines. The blank 22 is shown in
Figure 3 and comprises a base panel 24, a front portion panel 26, a rear wall panel 28, a lid panel 30, and two side wall panels 32. The base panel 24 is connected by fold lines 34, 36, and 38 to the front portion panel 26, the rear wall panel 28, and the two side wall panels 32 respectively. The lid panel 30 is connected by fold line 40 to the rear wall panel 28.
The side wall panels 32 are connected by two, closely spaced, parallel fold lines 42 to two side wall tabs 44. Each side wall tab 44 is formed with a projecting portion 46, and the base panel 24 is provided with two slots 48, adjacent the fold lines 38, for receiving and retaining the projecting portions 46 when the side wall tabs 44 are folded along the parallel fold lines 42 so as to overlap the side wall panels 32.
The rear wall panel 28 is connected by fold lines 49 to two rear wall tabs 50, each of which is retained between a respective side wall panel 32 and its associated side wall tab 44 in order to support the rear wall panel 28 in an upright position.
The front portion 26 is connected by fold lines 51 to two side flaps 52, each of which slides between a respective side wall panel 32 and its associated side wall tab 44 when the front portion 6 of the box is moved to its closed position. The side flaps 52 are formed with a curved edge 54, which extends along the arc of a circle having a radius generally equal to the width w of the side wall panels 32.
The lid panel 30 is connected by fold lines 56 to two lid side panels 58, each of which is connected by two, closely spaced, parallel fold lines 60 to a respective lid tab 62. The lid tabs 62 are formed with projecting portions 64, and the lid panel 30 is provided with two slots 66, adjacent the fold lines 56, for receiving and retaining the projecting portions 64 when the lid tabs 62 are folded along the parallel fold lines 60 so as to overlap the lid side panels 58.
The lid panel 30 is connected by a fold line 68 to a lid front panel 70, which is itself connected by fold lines 72 to twoiiid front tabs 74. Each lid front tab 74 is retained between a respective lid side panel 58 and its associated lid tab 62 in order to support the lid front panel 70 in a position which is perpendicular to that of the lid panel 30.
Each lid side panel 58 comprises a tapered portion 76, which ensures that the lid side panels 58 lie well clear of the opening at the top of the box when the lid 8 is fully open.
The base panel 24 and lid panel 30 are both formed in the shape of a square of side 30cm.
