To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY J. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex,

State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sputum-Cups, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. i

This invention relates to receptacles adapted, among other urposes, for use as a sputumcup, for the sic room, hospitals and wherever such cups are used. A cup for such use, should be of light weight, and provided usually with a cover.

My invention provides a cup, which, while possessing all the good qualities of cups heretofore used, possesses the additional important advantage, that, being inexpensive to manufacture, it may, after reasonable, usually one use, be destroyed, thus avoiding the necessity of cleansing it frequently, saving the time and labor necessitated by such cleansing, as well as avoiding the danger arising from lack of proper cleansing.

Although the cup may be made from different kinds of material, it is preferably made from heavy paper, previously rendered water proof and may be made from a blank previousl cut from a single sheet of material and so f0 ded that it is perfectly tight.

While my invention may be embodied in many different forms the one selected for illustration herein is preferred, it being provided with a handle, a self-closing cover, and an infolded flange to revent accidental falling out of the roll oFeotton or similar material commonly used in such cu s.

Referring to Fig. 6 of the embodiment of my invention shown herein, the blank A, shaped as shown, is first scored along lines 1-1, thus outlining the bottom of the cup. By scoring along the lines 22 and 3-3 the sides 44 and front 5 and back 6 of the cup are formed, leaving between the sides 4-4 and front 5 and back 6 the corner pieces 7'7 and providing the respective sides, front and back with extensions 88. For convenience of description, the sides 44 the front 5, and the back 6, may be'termed side portions. These extensions 8-8 are provided with the slots 99, and the lockingmembers 1010, as shown, adapted to enter the slots and lock the various parts of the receptacle securely together.

The cornerparts 77 are scored along lines ]l11 permitting them to be folded adjacent the sides of the rece tacle and the extensions 8 -8 are score along lines 1212, 1313 and 14-14 forming the flan es.

T e extension 8 of the back 6 of the cup is provided with a neck like member 15 scored at 16 to permit it to be folded inwardly over the flange at the back of the cup. This member 15 is cut alon the line 17 and scored in the line 18, thus orming a tongue like member 19 which stands upright and to which the cover is hinged when the part 20 is bentdownwardly adjacent the back of the cup. Part 20 is then out along lines 21 and 2222 and scored along lines 23, 24 and 25 preparatory to forming the handle 26. To form the cup the blank scored as above described is first folded upward along lines 11 thus forming the bottom. The sides 44 andfront 5 and back 6 being brought to an upri ht position, the corner sections 77 are fo ded inwardly along lines 11-1 1, formin triangular wings which are then resse adjacent the sides of the cup, bringmg the slots 99 on each side opposite to each other and in position to receive the members 10-10 for the respectix e sides. The locking member 10, provided with shoulders29, is then inserted through the slots 9-9, locking the sides securely. The triangular corner pieces 2828 of the front and back extension 88 are then infolded along lines 12-1314 and the parts 88 then turned inwardly, formingflanges which serve to retain in the cu the roll of cotton or similar substances w 'ch is customarily used in such receptacles and completing the formation of the cup proper. lhe part 'is then turned downwardly ad- 'acent the back of the cup, the arts 26 forming the handle folded outwar y on lines 23 and 25 and brought together on line 24, and part 27 laid adjacent the part 20 at the back of the cup. The parts 20 and 27 may now be secured to the back of the cup by any suitable adhesiveiand the cup is complete.

The handle 26 being flexible may be folded against the back of the on for convenience in packing, if desired. e tongue 19 remaining in an upright position serves as a hinge member for the cover 30 in connection with the slot 31 therein. 4

The cover is of regular outline and provided at its sides with shouldered portions herein represented as slots 32-32 to engage an elastic band 33 or other suitable spring member which encircles the cup to cause the cover to close automatically when .released from pressure at the finger piece 34 provided at the back edge of the cover. Claim.

1. As a new article of manufacture a rece tacle of the class described comprising a ho y formed from a single sheet of material shaped and scored to present a bottom, side walls extending therefrom and provided with infolding extension pieces integral therewith, one of said extenison pieces being provided with a ortion extendmg therefrom in line therewit 1, said latter extension portion being adapted to be folded back over said extension piece and down over the corresponding side -wall and-cut to form a tongue member near the top of said side wall, and also cut to form a handle member adapted to be bent out at an angle to saidside wall beneath the tongue,

and a cover hinged upon said tongue member and having a portion thereof extending above said handle member.

2. As a new article of manufacture a receptacle -of the class described, comprising a body formed from a single sheet of material shaped and scored to present a bottom, side walls extending therefrom, one of said side walls being provided with a portion extendmg therefrom in line therewith, said extenslon-being adapted to be folded back and downward over said latter side wall, and cut to form a tongue member near the top of said side wall, and also cut to form a handle member adapted to be bent out at an angle to said side wall beneath the tongue, and a cover hinged upon said tongue member and having a portion thereof extending above said handle member.

As a new article of manufacture, a recep tacle comprising a body formed from a sing sheet of flexible material scored to present a bottom portion, side portions extending therefrom, corner portions between said side portions and an extension piece extending 0m one of the slde portions and shaped so as to be folded outwardly and downwardly over that side portion of the receptacle from which it extends, a handle piece formed in said extension piece and adapted to be bent therefrom and extend outwardly from the side of the receptacle.
