7 11 Claims.
The invention relates to cartons used for various goods. Preferably the carton will be made of some such material as cardboard or the like, which comes in sheet form. A blank will be cut from the sheet and then bent and folded into proper form to make the carton or receptacle.
The invention contemplates a neat looking, rel atively sturdy carton which may be especially useful as a container for jars and the like of cosmetics although it may be used for any material.
In the accompanying drawings showing a specific embodiment of the invention, Fig, l is a plan view of a blank from which the carton may be made. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the completed carton with the cover open. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are.
perspective views of the blank partially formed into the carton. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a completed carton illustrating the last step in its formation. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a carton showing an optional form of top. Fig. 10 is a perspective of another optional form of carton and top, and Fig. 11 is a fragmentary plan view of a part of the blank for formation of the top shown in Fig. 10. The figures are on different scales.
In Fig. 1 the blank from which the carton is 3 to be formed is shown as a single sheet of material. The solid lines of the drawings show lines on which cuts are made. The dot-and-dash lines show lines on which folds are made and these may be scored or otherwise prepared for easy and accurate folding.
In forming the carton, the members 2, H at the edges of the members I and 6 and the members and 26 at the sides of the member 21 may be turned up as illustrated in Fig. 5. Then, as shown in Fig. 6, th membersll and I6 may be folded upward at right angles to the member ID and the members 2| and 22 are folded inward and interlocked in any suitable manner as by the slot 23 in one side of member 2| engaging with the slot 24 in the opposite side of the member 22. The members 2| and 22 thus join to hold the side members in place and to form a back wall. Thus the member ID becomes the outer front wall of the carton and the members H and I6 become the outer side walls of the carton. Now the members 33 and 34 at the ends of the member may be bent up and inwardly to lie in contact with the surface of the member 35. Now the rectangular frame made up of members IO, N, l6, 2| and 22 may be turned up, causing the member 26 to engageand turn up the member I! while the member 25 engages and turns up the member 2. The member 21 thus becomes the bottom of the carton. The member 35, with its inturned members 33 and 34, is turned upwardly to be against the interlocked members 2| and 22. .Thus, as shown in Fig. 7, the member becomes the outer back wall of the ends of either or both may be curved or v beveled as indicated at 39 and 40. Now the members l3 and H! are folded inwardly to form top side walls and the members l4 and I8 are folded downwardly, enveloping, respectively, the
members |2 and .25' and the members I! and 26, and forming inner side walls for the carton. Thus the members I2 and 25 form additional reinforcing for one side wall while the members I! and 26 form additional reinforcing for the other side wall. The rear ends of the side Walls I4 and I9 engage and hold in position the folded members 36 and 31. Themembers l5 and 20 are folded inwardly and lie against the bottom member 21 and form bracing members for the side walls. Then the member 28 is folded inwardly forming a front top wall and overlies the front ends of the topside walls l3 and Ill. The ends of section 28 are beveled or inclined at 28a to givethe appearance of a'beveled joint as in-. dicated in Fig. 2. Because of the beveled ends of 28 the section 29 is narrower than the section ID by an amount equal to the width of the-sections |3 and I8. The section 29 is now bent downwardly going between the inner sid walls l4 and I9 and holding them in place. The section 30 is'bent rearwardly and overlies the bracing members l5 and'20 and engages the catch 3| on the member I5 and the catch 32 on the member 20, thus holding the parts assembled and through the slot 44 provided in the front wall l0.
The cover 4| is hinged to the member 31..
and the member 31 is held in place by the ends of the inner wall members I4 and 19 so that the cover may be raised or opened without loosening the carton parts. 1
When an article is in the carton it may rest on the members 15, 20 and and hold the walls in place and this condition may persist when the article is removed depending largely on the substance of which the carton is made or how well it retains the shape into which it is folded. However, in order to assure the carton being held in proper form the members l5 and 2|! interlock.
with the member 30 to hold the wall members in place.
The folded members l2, I1, 25 and 26 reinforce or strengthen the side walls and they also tend to produce an improved appearance to the device.
Some or all of these members may be omitted but when present they present a neat and better flnj appearance to the exposed ends ,of the member 35. Because of the presence of the members l2, I1, 25, 26, 33 and 34 smooth doubled or curved edges show instead ofthe single cut edges which might otherwise be exposed.
Since they lie adjacent each other in the blank as shown in Fig. 1 the forward ends of the members I2 and 25, and I1 and 26 respectively are beveled. This beveling also may make easier their insertion between the outer and inner sid wall members.
The top member 4| with or without the member -3l may be omitted and an uncovered carton used. The slot engagement of the member 43 may not be necessary. The slot 44 and the member 43 may be omitted or may be diiferently formed and the cover may be held in place by other suitable means or gravity may be sufficient to hold it in position.
As shown in Fig. 9, the cover member 4la may be shortened so that the narrow closing section 42a may rest between the side walls and against the inner side of the front wall. A cut-out thumb piece 45 may be provided, which rests on top of the front wall and limits the downward or inward movement of the top Ma and may also form a convenient means for pulling the; top up and open.
As shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the top member HD may be provided with a closing section 46 which may be bent downwardly. At about the bending line there may be provided a slot 48 through which may be passed an upwardly turned tab 41 extending from the member 46. Thus the top member 4lb may be closed between the sides and front walls, with the member 46 resting against the frontwall to hold the cover by friction. The tab 41 extends outwardly and may be grasped to pull the top of the carton up and open. v
The sizes, proportions, shapes and specific arrangements of the various parts are not essential to the invention which may be embodied in a device incorporating various changes and omissions.
I claim as my invention:
