Throughout the several views of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the sameor similar parts. y
The er'nllvodirnent of the invention as illustrated ln Figs. l, 2 and 3 comprises a single blank comeach hingedly connect to the said panel 58 corner paratively greater in dimension in one direction j than in the other suitably scored to provide the desired carton supporting a base panel and side Wall panels together with the panels for formingor providing the lid. The blank is provided with a panel 25 which forms the base or bottom of the carton and. has its bounding edges dened by score or fold lines 25, 21, 28 and 29. The score or fold lines 21 and 29, since they are longer than the remaining score or fold lines, constitute the sides of the base 25 and have respectively, integrally, hingedly, Vconnected therewith extensions 39 and 3|. The extension 39 forms in the erected carton the side or front wall while the extension 3| in the erected carton forms the side or back wall together With a lid or cover which is hingedly connected to the said wall.
The blank extension 3B is divided by longitudinal score or fold lines 32, 33 and 34 into a plurality of panels 35, 36, 31 and 38 between the attaching score or fold line 21 and the end of the extension 38. In the erected carton the panel 35 constitutes the side or front wall outer wall member and has its opposite ends dened by a score or fold line 39 which are respectively substantially aligned with the carton bottom or base panel end scores 26 and 28. The panel 35v through its end scores 39 has hingedly connected to its opposite ends corner'pieces 40 Which are designated in the trade as bellows' corner pieces, and they are, therefore, each provided with a diagonal fold line 4|. The panel 36 in the erected carton forms the side or iront walltop wall member and has its end formed by cut lines 42 which like the score or fold lines 39 are respectively in alignment With the carton base or bottom panel end scores 26 and 28. In the erected carton therpanel 31 constitutes the side or front wall inner Wall member having its ends dened by a similar `score or fold line 43 which respectively hingedly connects with the ends of the panel 31 tucking naps 44.L Each or the tuck# ing iaps 44 is longitudinally divided by a score or fold line 45 for integrally hingedly connecting thereto spacer flap V46 whichin the erected carton underlies the end wall for a purpose later to bemade clear. The panel 31 is further provided, within its borders and near its end scores 43, with elongated apertures 41 that cooperate with the end wall panels for locking the carton walls in erected positions as will later be made clear. The remaining panel 38 has its ends defined by cut lines 43 and is slightly shorter than thepanels 35, 36 and 31 and in the erected carton constitutes a glue flap for securing the inner wall member 31 of the side or front Wall to the base or bottom panel 25. In o-rder to accomplish this,
the carton base or bottom panel is provided with adhesive 48 on which the glue flap 38 restsas will later bemade clear.
The blank extension 3| includes the same panels as the extension 30 plus several additional panels to form a lid or cover for the box or carton and which lid or cover is hollow as will later be made clear. Specifically, the extension 3| is provided with parallel score or fold lines 49, D, 5|, l 52, 53, 54, 55, 56 and 51 which form between them and the'bottom or base panel scoreV or fold line 29 and the end of the extension 3| panels 58, 59, 60, 6|, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 and 61. In the erected carpieces 4|! and form, what is known in the trade, bellows corners each provided with a diagonal score or fold line 10. In the erected carton the panel 59 constitutes the box or carton cover panel and has its ends dened by score or fold lines 1I whichv are respectively in alignment with the score or fold lines 2B and 28 of the carton base or bottom panel 25 and the said panel 59 is of substantially the same area as the carton base or bottom 25. The vscore or fold lines 1| each integrally, hingedly, connect with the 'cover panel naps 12 which are adapted to be folded onto the panel 59 as shown in phantom lines at 13. The flaps 12 form aiinis'hed edge for the lid or cover as will be obvious from Fig. 3 with a portion of said naps forming a cover flange as will later be made clear. In order that the flaps 12 may eiiiciently function their ends are biased with a portion considerably shorter than the parallel dimension of the panel 59 so that it may underlie the inner spaced panel of the cover or lid; The panel 6|] is adapted to overlie the panel 59 along a zone inwardly of the score or fold line 59 and said panel 60 is of a Width substantially equal to the width of the top Wall member and the panel 69 acts as a ange for the lid or cover to engage said top wall member. The panel 62 forms the cover or lid inner member and is shorter in length and narrower in width than the main cover panel 59 by so much as constitutes the side and end Walls top wall members. The panel 52 has its ends defined by score or fold lines 14 which hingedly connect to the panel 62 closure ends 15 which are of a Width equal t0 the spacing of the cover or lid and outer panels 59 and 62 from one another. The panels 6| and 63 which are adjacent to and extend longitudinally of the panel B2 are of a Width substantially equal to the width of panels 15 andcooperate therewith in eiecting the spacing of the panels 59 and 62 from one another. In order to maintain these panels in proper spaced relation the panels 6|l and 63 have their ends respectively defined by score or fold lines 15 and 16 and which score or fold lines respectively hingedly connect to the ends of their respective panels bendable flaps 11 and 18 that are disposed transversely of the their assembled positions each of the spacer i'laps or panels 15 has its outer edge dened by a score or fold line 19 through which thereis integrally hingedly attached thereto a tucking flap 89.
In the erected carton the flap 64 is adapted to overlie thercover panel 59 along aA zone inwardly of the score or fold line 49 and, similar to the pane1'60 form a flange for the cover or lid for engagement with the top wall member of the carton side or front wall. In order to secure the flange panel 64 in position, adhesive 8| is applied to the panel 59 inwardly of the score or fold line 49 and similarly in order tosecure the panel 6D to the panel 59 the latterV to;-the.paneli36 ofthe blank extension 30`and forms thev carton side wall or. back .topdwall 44member and has itsendsdenedby cut. lines 83 .which arelin substantial alignment;y with .the carton b-ase or bottom .panel end. scoresrr26 and 28; Thexpanelv 66uin the erected carton. forms the side wall vor-back inner wall member in opposition tothe side wall or front inner wall member 31. Therends ofy the kpanel66` are; deiined byf'score ork foldlines 84 whichintegrally hirigedlyconnectto the endsof saidipanel66 tucking flaps.85..which are similar to theztucking aps 44 of the front inner: wallmembers. Eachtucking flapv 85 has hingedly` connected therewith .througha scoreor fold line 86 a spacer flap .81 which like the spacer flaps 46 cooperate with the end wallsin formingv they same and retaining them in erected positions as will later be made clear. i Theilap 6 6 is vfnrtherprovided within'l its border andnearits ends with elongated apertures88 that cooperatewith the end walls in retaining themin position. The remaining flapyll, similar to the flap 38, forms the means for. securing the inner wall member to the carton base or bottom panel 25 and constitutesa glue flap for which purpose it may have applied thereto adhesive 8 9 to engage the carton base or bottom panel 25 along a. zone inwardly of its score or vfold line 29 corresponding to the width of thetop wall member. It will be' understood that the adhesive 89 may be applied to the carton base or bottompanel instead of to the flap 61 as; was pointed out` above in connection with the adhesive 48.
-Thecarton base or, bottom panell 25has integrallyhingedly connected to its ends through score or-, fold lines 26 and 28 end walls forming extensions` 90 and; 9| 'which` are; substantially identical withone another, and it is deemed su'- cient if but oneofthem. be -describedin detail. y Accordingly, extension 90 is provided between the score or fold line 26 and the outer end thereof with a pluralityof parallel score orv fold lines 92, 93, and 94 thereby providingv panels 95,96, S11-and 98. In the erected-carton the panel 95 formsfvthehend wall outer wall memberiandqhas its ends denedby score or fold lines 99 and |00.` The score or fold line 99 hingedly-connects tothe panel 9,5 thebellows corner piece 4 0 while the-score or foldflineI hngedly connects -to the panel-95 the bellows corner piece ,69:U The panel 96 in the erectedA carton, forms the end walltop wall member while the panel 91 forms the. end wall inner wall member. Sincethe end wall. inner wallj member 91 is to be disposed between the carton front and backs inner wall members, it hastaflengthA shorter thanthe end Wall outer wall-member orpanel 95 Aby .so much as'rthexsaid'front and'back inner wall members are-inwardlyspaced from the side edges of the cartonzbase or bottom-.25.` The said end'wall inner. Wall member or panel 91 has its ends, for a.major;portion thereof defined by score or fold lines|0| ,whichhingedlyconnect to the ends ofthe saidapanel 91Vertica1 spacing flaps |02. Thefpanelil beyond `the spacing flaps `|02 has projecting ltherefromlocking lugs |03 whichc operate with the front and `back inner wall members-,elongated apertures 41 and 88 in locking thefcarton walls inftheir erectedv positions as will later be made clear. between the saidend .wall inner Vand Y outer`wall members to prevent collapse of said inner wall member. l
After the blank. has beencut and scoredfas above described and illustrated in` Fig. 1, it has applied thereto the adhesive 8| and82 as wellas the adhesive 89k to the panel 61l and similarL adhesive (48') to thepanelor glue nap 38. The side or front wall extension is then folded on the score orfold line 32 for bringing the glue ap38 into contact with the base or `bottom panel 25. The extension on. 3| is now folded 0n the score or fold line 50A for bringing the panel 60 into engagement. with the adhesive 82 whereupon the said extension isvreversely folded on the score or fold line 5| to be again reversely folded on the score or fold line 52 thereby bringing the panel 64 vinto engagement'with the adhesive 8|. At the same time the glue flap 61 with its adhesive 89 is brought into engagement with the base or bottom panel 25 along the zone inwardly of the fold line 29 for securing the back wall inner Wall member or panel 66, through the glue flap or panel 51 to the said carton base or bottom panel 25. The blank is now yin the position illustrated in Fig. 2 and it is in thisposition that the carton is shipped to the user in itsv knock-down condition to be erected by the user.
The user upon desiring to place merchandise inthe carton either sets up the carton Yproper or the lid in sequential order, and assuming that the carton is to be set up first, the extensions 30 and 3| are actuated from their knocked-down or flat position thereby effecting the upstandingof the front and backwallsinner and outer wall members to be parallel to one-another joined at their upper ends by the-said front and back wall top wall members which are parallel with` the bottom or base 25, of. the carton, as clearly i1- lustrated in Fig. 3. The tucking apsv 85 and 86 are then arranged to be transversely of the carton base or bottom 25 whereuponthe end Wall extensions and 9| are lifted from their flat position to be vertically disposed to the base or bottom panel 25. The positioning ofthe. said'end wall extensions automatically causes the bellows'corners' 40: and `|59 respectively'to fold onv their diagonal fold lines 4| andk 10 and to be transversely-of'the said carton bottomv or. base 25. The spacer flaps 81 are then folded tooverlie the cartonbottom25 whereupon the panels 96, 91 and 98 are eachiolded'to be at right anglesto one another after folding or positioning the spacer flaps |02 to be normalv to thev panel91. The folding of thegpanels 96,91 and 98 as just described automatically folds. the same inwardly olf the. carton proper and enclosing Within said panels the tucking flaps 85 and the bellows corner ilaps 40 and 69. a
The carton is now reads7 ,to have itscover or lid erected which consists in swinging Ythe inner panel 62A from its `flatsuperimposed positionon the'main cover panel 59' to a position spaced therefrom, but parallel therewithaas determined bygthe panels y6| and 63. At this time therflaps 12 -arey respectively folded on the score or fold lines 1| to be superimposed on thepanel 59 with the-ends of said naps 12.beneath the cover inner panel 62.v The cover foldable flaps 11 and 18 are nowpositioned transversely of the cover panel 59 whereupon the tucking iiaps 80 are bent te be normal to the spacer flaps 15 and the; tucking flaps 80inserted betweenthe cover panels 59 and 62gfor thereby lock-ing the cover vin position 1t-inthe inner: Panel 62,: 0f. the. lid for cover 1in? l7 wardly spaced from the cover main or outer panel 59.
The carton is now fully erected or set up as shown in cross section in Fig. 3 and comprises a box or carton proper having hingedly connected to one of its side walls, or its back wall, a lid r cover which is in reality a separate compartment with a flange extending therearound to engage the top wall members of the carton front, back and end walls. The compartment of the cover may be utilized-to receive merchandise or material capable of being saturated with a scent giving liquid such as perfume or the like and for which purpose the said panel 62 of the cover or lid may be provided with apertures |04 t0 permit the said pleasing odors to enter the ybox or carton proper when the lid is closed. The said lid or cover compartment may further contain material adapted to hold liquid for supplying moisture to the box or cover or an insulating material such as disclosed in applicants above identified pending application and which material is indicated in the drawings by the reference numeral |05. It will be appreciated that this inner panel of the cover or lid may merely act as a compressor or retainer to engage merchandise within the box or carton proper or it may even have a cut out similar to the aperture |04 to embrace a portion of the contents or merchandise of the box or cai ton proper. It should further be noted that while the anges 60 and 83 are illustrated and have been described as of a width substantially equal to the width of the front back and end wall top wall members they may be of a greater dimension which should result in a compartment that was of an area less than the interior of the carton or box proper, or a cover or lid having a flange that projects beyond the box or carton.
The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 contemplates the use of a cover or lid that is without a compartment and formed from a blank separate from the blank of the box or carton proper.
It is believed that a description of the blank of Fig. 4 is unnecessary since it involves the same elements as the blank of Fig. 1 except that the panels 59, 60, 6|, 62, 63 and 64 have been eliminated and the score or fold lines 55 and 49 consolidated as a. single score or fold line carrying the reference character y49 in Fig. 4. The blank of Fig. 4 is slightly modified over that of Fig. 1 to the extent of providing in the side or front Wall top wall member elongated slits |06 and in providing in the back Wall top wall member 65, similar elongated slits |07. These slits act as receiving or attaching apertures for hinge lugs from the cover or lid to be subsequentially described.
The blank of Fig. 4 after being cut and scored has adhesive applied to the glue flaps 38 and 89 whereupon the'side wall extensions are respectively folded on their respective fold lines 32 and 49 to bring the said glue naps into engagement with the box or carton base panel 25. The blank is then in the knocked-down condition as illustrated in Fig. and it is in this condition it is shipped to the user.
The cover or lid, as illustrated in the drawings, is of two sections with each section being respectively carried by one of the side walls but it is to be understood that a single cover may be provided for attachment to only one side wall. In either case the cover is formed of a blank substantially centrally longitudinally Vdivided by a score or fold line |08- thereby provided .in the cover -panels |09 and H0. Projecting from one of the panels, panel H0 for example, is a pair of hinge lugs IH and H2 each substantially T-shaped in plan and having a stem portion H3 integrally, hingedly connected with the panel H0 through a. score or fold line H4 and each hinge lug having laterally projecting arms H5 and H6 each hingedly connected through a score or fold line and with the stem IH. After the cover or lid blank has been formed as illustrated in Fig. 7, it is folded along the score or fold line |08 for bringing thepanels |09,v
and ||0 into face contact with one another and in which position they are adhesively joined and shipped to the user.
The user sets up the box or carton of Figs. 4 and 5 in the same manner as above described with 'respect to the `box or carton proper of Fig. 1 whereupon the arms H5 and H6 of each hinge lug H I and H2 are folded to lie on its hinge lug stern H4 whereupon the lugs are inserted through the hinge attaching slits |06 and |01 of the carton proper. The arms H5 and HS after being inserted through the slits |06 and |01 outwardly spring to their normal position to underlie the carton side walls top wall members for thereby attaching the said cover or lid to the carton against inadvertent displacement.
Due to the fact that the side walls are hollow, the hinge lugs may oscillate therein upon closing and opening of the lid or cover without requiring bending in said lugs particularly if the said cover or lid is not actuated beyond from its closed position when the said hinge receiving slits |06 and |07 are formed at the inner edge of the top wall members.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 8 to 1l, inclusive, use is again made of a hollow cover or lid with said cover or lid divided with one portion thereof carried by each of the side walls or the front and back walls. The blank for forming this carton is substantially identical with that of Fig. l except that the panel 59' in the blank extension 3|' is but half of the width of that shown in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the blank extension 3| has eliminated from it the panel 60 which forms the flange at the free end of the cover. Otherwise the extension 3|' of Fig. 8 is substantially identical with that of Fig. 1.
The blank of Fig. 8 is modified in its side wall extension 30 to the extent of having the necessary cover panel therein to form a partial cover in the same manner that the extension 3| formed, Accordingly, the blank extension 30 of Fig. V8 has hingedly connected with the panel or side wall outer wall member 35, a panel l 8 which corresponds to the panel 59' in the extension 3|. The panel H8 through a hinge or fold line H9 has integrally hingedly connected therewith a panel |20 whichl in turn has integrally hingedly connected therewith through the score or fold line |2I a panel |22 that forms the lid or cover inner panel and corresponds with the panel 62 of extension 3|. The panel |22 has connected with it through the score or fold line |23 a panel |24 thatin turn is connected through a score or fold line |25 with the panel |26 connected with the side wall or front wall top wall member or panel 36 through a score or fold line |21.
The ends of the panels H8, |20, |22, |24 and |26 are dened and carry the same additional material as the panels 59', 60, 62', 63 and 64 of the blank extension 3|.
After the blank of Fig. 8 has been cut and scored as above described and as illustrated in agent.'v4.5'n
Fig; 8 :adhesive is applied ato fthen glue flapor panels 38 and 39 or the adhesiveisl applied tothe box or carton main panel or .base'25 Iand adhesive is similarly Vapplied to the panels 64 and |26 or tothe panels 59 and I8 inwardlyof their respective adjacent score or fold lines 49 and 32 whereupon the blank extensions 39 Vand 3|' are folded on their score or fold lines |2I, and 5| thereby adhesively securing .the parts to one another in `a knocked-down `position as illustrated infcross section in Fig.`9. It is in this condition that the blank of Fig. 8 is forwarded to the user to be set up as illustrated vin Fig. 10.- l
.In order for the user to setup orerect the cartonfrom Fig. 8, he follows the Vsame-steps as abovedescribed inthe setting up of the carton of4 Fig. 1, except that he must open'both lids'or cover sections after the walls of the carton proper are-erected. The set up box or carton of Fig. '10 comprises a lid or cover section hingedly connected'with each of the side walls, or the `front and `back of the carton, and may be actuated to a closed position with the free edges of the cover sections in engagementk with one another and `which free edges are formed by the panel 60 `of extension 3|" and panel |20 of extension 3D". vIt will be noted that the lid or coversections of Fig. 10 are each provided with end flanges which engage the top wall members 96 of the end walls invlimitingV the `closing ofthe said cover sections, and which closed position of one ofthe cover sections is illustrated in Fig. 11. The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 12 to 15, inclusive, is substantially identical with that illustrated in Fig. lexceptthat one of the cover sections is provided with la flange at its free end adapted to rest on topof the other Alid or `cover section which is not provided with said longitudinal flange. In order to provide this structure the blank extension 3| of Fig. 2 has its cover or panel section 59" slightly wider than the corresponding cover `section vpanel 59' of Fig. 8, also the blank extension 3|" has hingedly'connected to the cover section panel 59" thexpanel 60 of Fig. 1 which was eliminated from the extension 3| of Fig. 8. f
. After the blank of Fig. 12 has' been cut' and scored as above describedand illustrated, 'it has theyadhesive applied .thereto and is folded in substantially the same'manner as Fig. 2 in so far as its blank extension 30 is concerned while the extension 3| of Fig. 12 is folded inthe same manner as the extension 3U of Fig. 8 vand isso shipped to the user. Theuser'goes through the same steps in erecting the carton of Fig. 14 from the blank of Figs."12 and 13 asv described inconnection with erecting the blank of Figs. 1 v'and 8." The resulting carton'from the blank of Fig. 1 is as illustrated in Figs. 14 'and 15 with one of the sections having longitudinal flanges projecting from the free end thereof which overlapped the adjacent free end of the other cover section all as clearly discernable from Fig. 14 and clearly illustrated in Fig., 15. lBy this construction there is provided a box'or carton which may havethe cover providing a somewhat sturdier construction since the flange of the one lid or cover section iirmly engages the top of the second'lid or cover section. v'In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. v1B to 19, inclusive, a `construction is utilized which is substantially `thereversefofthe construction shown in Fig. V8, Ain that the-side and end Y wall members which lare integrally, hingedly connected with the'base o r bottom panel 25forms'the `inner wallfmembers'instead of the outer wallimembers. Byrthis 'construction itis possible Vto have the'same sideof the board exposed instead of having the yoppositesidesthereof exposed a's is the 'case with the constructions heretoforedescribed. In other words,`and as illustrated in Fig. 18,' the `inner wall member of each ofthe ,-four sides Vis integral and continuous upwardlyfrom thesaid base or bottompanel and thesaid Walls thereby are folded'outwardly of the carton proper insteadfof inwardly. This l construction is particularly advantageous `when itis desired to print orotherwise decorate both the inside and outside of the lid or cover,and/ or .the inside and outsidevoi:` the carton walls, and the inside` of the base or carton bottom. In other words, the blank as illustrated in Fig. 16 shows the unfinishedv side uppermost and it will bereadily understood that by. turning the blank torest on its wrong side all exposed surfaces, when the carton or package is in use, can be printed,` lithographed, or otherwise decorated in one operation `whereupon the carton may be securedin its knock-down position by folding the side wall extensions on themselves to bring the glue'flaps 38 and 89 into engagement with the carton base or bottom panel 25 and to Abring the coverrhinge or spacing panels 64 and |26 into engagement with the cover sections outerpanels for completing the knocked-down carton-for shipment Vto the ultimate user. The erection of the blank ofFig. 16 fromits knock-down posi-` tion in Fig. 1'7 to itserected postionof Fig.r 18 follows substantially the same steps as above described, namely, the setting up of the side walls followed by the setting up ofthe end walls which encloses the bellows corners and the'side walls tucking flaps whereupon' the lid or cover sections are set up as above described.
It should b'e noted thatr in the specific embodiment in Figs. 16, to' 19 the walls are locked in 'their'e'rected position slightly differently from the locking of the erected walls as lpreviously described. j The said end-wall instead of having locking llugs projecting therefromV are provided withy largeraps orpanels |28'which takes the place of [the spacerflans 98 and are `utilized as the locking means. The sidewalls glue flaps 38Y and 61 have .the adhesive thereof stormedr short of their ends as at |29 -therebvproviding a free portion which cooperates with the base or bottom Apanel 25 to receive the locking lugs |28 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 19 jand said locking portion yof the .glue flaps 38 andV 61 indicated by the reference numeral |30.
In connection with Figs. 18 and 19 there is illustrated the .use of a platform |31 spaced from the carton bottom 25 by spacers |32 integral with and depending from the platform edges. By this constructionan air space |33 is provided' above the said carton base 25.
From the foregoing it is believed Anow evident thatv there has been provided a carton or packagev of the hollow wall type having secured to the upper -end 'of one or both walls a cover or lid which is of either double thickness or spaced apart construction thereby providing a lcom-- partment in the lid and it is further obvious that there has been provided a lconstruction which accomplishes the objects initially set forth.
