POWDER BOX. APPLIOATION FILED JUL! 24, 1908.

V WITNESSES my A TTORNE Y8 OFFICE.
HENRY J. DIERKING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
POWDER-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 27, 1909.
Application filed July 24, 1908. Serial No. 445,232.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. Drnnxixe, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to an attachment for powder boxes whereby the powder may be applied direct to the face or other part of the body.
The primary object of my invention is to provide simple means whereby the powder or other material from the containing paclo age may be applied direct to the face or body instead of emptying the powder in a recep tacle or on the hand, and then applying the same, thus materially saving time and. economizing in the use of the powder, and also making the application of the same much more convenient than by the ordinary method.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment which may be applied to various forms of boxes, and which -may be made to be applied to the box ordinarily constructed.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this s ecification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is plan view of one form of box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the attachment and top of the box.
The body 10 may be of any suitable form, and is adapted to contain powder or other material in the usual way, and either integral therewith or separate therefrom may be arranged a top'or cap 11 forming a part of the body. This cap 11 may be provided with a curved upper part 12 in which may be arranged the usual openings or apertures 13 for the powder to pass outward from the box, and pivotally held to the part 12 of the cap, as at 14, is a disk or device 15. This device 15 may be provided with openings 16 which are so arranged relatively with respect to the openings 13 in the top or cap that when the device 15 is moved on its pivot the openings 16 may be made to register with the openings 13 for the powder to pass from the box, while by a partial rotation of the device 15 the openings 16 will be carried out of alinement and thereby close the openings 13. The device 15 may be of any preferred construction, and may be attached in any desired way and location with respect to the box.
To receive the powder as it passes from the openings 16, I arrange a plurality of tu'lts or bristles 17 forming llexible means or a brush element to receive the powder as it passes through the openings 16. The receiving means may be of the nature of soft bristles, or it may be of any suitable material which is adapted to catch the powder as it passes through the openings 16, and when in the form of bristles as shown, the said de vice 15 may be pressed or otherwise made, as at 18, to receive the end of the bristles which may be held in said recessed portions by suitable sealing means 19, or in any other desired way. The number of the bristles and their position as well as the number of openings may be varied to suit the desires of the manufacturer or user.
The word fibrous is intended to include any flexible material as cotton bristles or the like of which the applying means may be made.
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided whereby the powder or material from a box may be applied to the face or other part of the body without any handling whatever, except to force the powder therefrom; that a simple attachment is provided which may be applied to various forms of boxes and in various locations, and that said means may be applied to the ordinary cap or top of the usual form of box so that the saic cap may be removed from one box and fitted to that of another in order that the attachment may be made interchangeable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An attachment for powder boxes or the like, comprising a top provided with openings, a device pivotally held on said top and provided with openings adapted to register with the openings of the top, and flexible applying means on said pivoted device surrounding the openings therein.
2. In a powder box, the combination with a body having apertures therein, of a disklike device pivotally held thereto and provided with openings adapted to register with the openings in said body, said disk being vided With openings adapted to register with the openings in said body, said disk being provided with recessed parts and bristles extending outward from the recessed parts in which they are held and arranged about the openings and adapted to catch the powder as it passes through the openings for the purpose set forth.
4. In a boX, the combination with a body having apertures therein at one end, of a disk-like device pivotally held thereto and provided With openings adapted to register With the openings in said body, said disk being provided with recessed parts and means projecting outward to form a brush, said means being held and arranged about the openings and adapted to catch the poW der as it passes through the openings for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty second day of July A. D. 1908.
