To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE C. CHRIS- MAN, Ya citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers, of which -the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,` forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to anattachment for typewriters,,comprising an adjustable blind and guide, to be used in teaching what is commonly known as the touch system of ty-pewriting.

To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, whichwill be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings,in which;

order to receive set screws 1 1, which are seated in the front portion of the base 1', and thus adjustably secure the plate 8 in proper position.

`Formed integral with the center of the plate 8 is a standard 12, in the upper end of which is formed avvertically disposed slot 13;

` and arranged toslide vertically on said slotted lstandard isa vertically disposed plate 14, the side edges of which are bent around the edges of the standard 12, as designated' by15; and formed in said plate 14 is a slot 16, which coincides with the slot 13 when, the parts of the device are assembled for use.

' Formed integral with the upper end of the plate 14 is a plate 18, which is inclined to correspond with the inclination of thevkey-l board `of the typewriter, and which plate 'erforms the function of a blind to hide the Eeyboard from the vision of the'operator,v when the latter is seated in proper position in front oi the machine.

The division plate or guide for the operators hands comprises a Avertically disposed plate 19, which, when the attachment is in use, is ositioned immediately over the center 'of t e keyboard, as shown ,in Figs. 1 and ,the rear side of the standard 12, and the bolt 22 passesthrou h one of the slots 21 through the coinciding s

13 and 16, and the outer end of said bolt receives a winged nut 23, thus providing means for adjustably and rigidly uniting the standard 12, plate 14, and guide y19. Y

In teaching the touch system of typewriting, the operators hands are placed on the keyboard 1 on each side of the plate 19, which divides the keyboard into two parts, and therefore performs the function of a guide for the ends of the iingers of the operator; and the plate 18 arranged immediately over the keyboard revents the operator Vfrom seeing the location of the various keys.

ln Fig. 4 l have illustrated the plate 18 as being provided at its ends with bent `over edges 18a, and adapted to-slide beneath said plate, between said edges, is an extension plate 18", thus providing an expanding blind which may be adjusted to suit different sized keyboards.

ln Figs. 9 and 10 l have shown a modification of the guide plate 19, and which guidel A thereby, to be attached to a typewriter independent of the basel. l

I claim 1. An attachment for typewriters, comprising a base, a support fixed to the base and arranged in front of the key board of the type Writer, a vertically disposed plate projecting rearward from the support over the key board7 anda second plate supported bythe sup ort above the firstplate, and which secon plate covers the typewriter key board.

2. The combination with a typewriter base, of a support adjustably positioned on the front of thebase, a vertically disposedA plate projecting rearward from the support over the key board, anda second plate supported by the su port above the nrst plate,

and which secon plate covers the typewriter key board.

3. An attachment for typewriting machines and the like, vcomprising a base, a

standard `adjustably fixed thereto, a plate adj ustably arranged on the upper end of the standard, and w ich plate covers the'key-4 'cally adjustable plate secured to the sup ort and extending between the keyboard an the first mentioned plate.

5. An attachment for writing machines, comprising a base, a standard adjustably fixed thereto, a vertically disposed plate adjustably arranged on the standard, and which vertically disposed plate extends rearward over the keyboard of the writing machine to divide said keyboard into two sections.
