Be it known that I, ZAL'MON'G'i Snows, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention; such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertainsto make anduse the same.
The present invention has relation force! tain improvements in the case shift of a typewriter and the advantages of the improvement will appear in connection with the following description of the invention.
Certain preferred forms of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a partial plan view of the type bars and their carrying means, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the type carrying segment, Fig. 3 is a vertical view of a portion of the Same partly in section, and Figs. 4 and 5 respectively are a Ian and section of the preferred segment s ifting lever.
''The type bars are arran ed in the usual nest shown at 20 so as to fa 1 back upon the usual rest 21 which is of a nature to deaden the sound of the return. The type bars are operated by links attached to them lvotally as shown at 22, and are pivota ly supported upon a segmental support 23 adapted to be raised and lowered in the improved manner about to be disclosed. At each end of the segment 23 are arranged ears. 24 and 25 which are centrallv perforated to fit over suitable upright columns or supports 26 and these columns are fitted with movable stops in the form of clamping segment.

This construction permits the upper and lower limits of movement of the segment 23 to be accurately and independently adjusted in a simple and easy manner. As shown in Fig. 2 the weight of the segment is carried by the cars 24 resting on the clamp stops 27, and similarly the clamp stops 28 limit the upward movement of the I" prefer to use a simple means for partly counter-balancing the weight of the segment 23, which means is shown plainly in 1 of the drawings. The rod 31 is furnished with twoilevers'38ir and 391which engage the iGPPGSitrB ends of the segment 23, and the effort of the spring 34 is such that these arms tend to lift the segment and aid its upward movement.
The shifting of the segment upward is preferably accomplished by the means shown in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive. The lever 40 is pivotally mounted by means of a fixed rod 41 and a link 42 is pivoted to the end of the lever 40 and its opposite end is pivoted as shown at 43 in Fig. 3, to the segment 23. Beneath the lever 40 and resting against the under surface thereof is a roller 44 which is rotatably carried at the end of a lever 45 which is pivotally attached at 46 to the shiftin key lever 47 carrying the usual knob or ey 48 for receiving ressure of the finger. The shifting lever 4 is extended beyond the pivotal mounting '46 and is provided with a strap 49 which loosely surrounds the lever 45 carrying the roller 44. Screws 50 and 51 are placed in the top and bottom of the strap 49 and serve to abut against the upper and lower surfaces respectively of the lever 45 when the segment is to be shifted. In operating this shifting segment to raise the same, the key 48 is depressed until the screw 51 strikes the lever 45 and pushes the roller 44 up under the lever 40. This pressure tilts the lever 40 and acts through the link 42 to raise the seg ment. The object of the loose connection just described for operating the lever 45 and roller 44 is to permit free adjustment of the position u and down of the segment 23 without inter ering with the normal position of the key' lever 47, and finger key 48.
Just in front of the printing point on the platen, a bracket 52 is fixed to the top of the segment 23 which bracket is cut out at 53 to provide the guide for the t pe bars in a well known manner. One si e of the bracket 52 is extended as shown at 54 and carries a light spring wire 55. arranged substantially as shown so that its end'lies across the top of the guide opening 53. This spring 55 is pushed forward each time that a type impression is made and it serves to certainly throw back each type bar after such impression and prevent any danger of sticking. v
Various modifications of structure may be introduced-into my improved device without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not limit myself to the details shown and described.
What I claim is- 1. In a typewriter, a type-bar segment mounted for movement up and down, a pivoted lifting lever connected thereto, a roller for lifting said lever, a pivoted .finger lever adapted to raise said roller, and means for adjusting at 'vvill the normal vertical relation between said finger lever and said roller, substantially as described.
2. In a typewriter, a type-bar segment mounted for movement up and down, a pivoted lifting lever connected thereto, a roller for liftingsaid lever, a two part pivoted finger lever one part of which is adapted to directly lift said roller, a finger button on the other part of said finger lever, and adjustable means for transmitting movement from one part of said finger lever to the other, substantially as described.
