  • An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component having. scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier and at least one elongated extension member slidably connected with said carrier; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said extension member is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component, said connecting means comprising a first pair of spaced bearing members connected with said first component, a second pair of spaced bearing members connected with and adapted to be elastically deflected relative to said carrier, pivot axle means. connected with each of one pair of said bearing members, and a seat formed in each of the other pair of said-bearing members for receiving said pivot axle means.
  • An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a, paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having afront face and formed with an elongated channel in said front face, an elongated extension member slidably received in said channel; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said channel is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.
  • An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face and formed with an elongated channel in said front face, a first elongated extension member slidably received in said channel and having a front face formed with a second channel parallel with said first channel, and a second elongated extension member slidably received in said second channel; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said channels are substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.
  • An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face, a first end, a second end, and formed with a channel in said front face, said channel extending between said ends and said carrier comprising first and second stop means in said channel adjacent to said first and second end, and an extension member slidably received in said channel and having a rear face formed with a protuberance engagea'ble with said stop means to prevent complete withdrawal of said extension member from said channel; and bearing means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that one end of said carrier is adjacent to said first component, said channel is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.

(Cl. 197140) The present invention relates to a combined edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters, stenotype machines, accounting machines and like impression producing apparatus.
All recent types of typewriters are normally provided with a graduated scale which facilitates proper centering of a paper sheet in the shiftable carriage. Such scales may be applied directly to the carriage rearwardly of the paper roller or are provided on an elongated metallic strip which is fastened to the carriage. The graduations which remain visible adjacent to both vertical edges of a paper sheet inserted into the carriage will indicate to a typist Whether or not the sheet is properly centered in the machine. It is also known to provide a rigid sheet supporting strip which is usually connected with the central portion of the carriage behind the paper roller and extends rearwardly and slightly upwardly from the carriage in a direction away from the typist so as to support such portions of one or more sheets which are already provided with typed matter so that the sheets are held against bending downwardly behind the carriage which would prevent the typist from having the entire typed surface in front of his or her eyes. Moreover, such paper sheet supporting strips enable an experienced typist to immediately note whether or not the last typed line is close to the lower edge of the sheet. Certain typewriters are provided with two sheet supporting strips, and it is also known to mount the sheet supporting strips in such a Way that they may be pivoted into substantial parallelism with the longitudinal direction of the paper roller when the machine is not in use.
A serious drawback of such separate sheet supporting and edge setting attachments is that their connection to the carriage of a typewriter or of another impression producing machine requires too much time, and also that the cover of the carriage must be formed with a large number of openings to permit the connection of such separate attachments thereto. Also, and particularly in a mass manufacturing plant, the number of rivets, screws and like connecting means for two separate attachments increases the overall cost of the production and, since the attachments usually consist of a metallic material, results in increased weight of the fully assembled machine.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a combined edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and like impression producing machines which may be connected to the carriage as a unit, and which may be readily and conveniently collapsed into a compact form when not in actual use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lightweight attachment of the above outlined characteristics whose parts may be readily collapsed, extended or exchanged without necessitating the use of any tools, and which may be readily adjusted for use with difierently dimensioned sheets.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the above described character which is particularly suited for small impression producing machines, such as portable typewriters, portable accounting machines, portable stenotype machines and the like, and
which may be readily attached to nearly all types of presently known impression producing machines.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a combined edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and like machines whose component parts may be mass produced of readily available and very cheap materials, and whose movable parts are connected with each other in such a way that friction alone will hold them in requisite position.
Still another object of our invention is to provide an attachment of the above outlined characteristics which is constructed and assembled in such a way as to automatically indicate to a typist that a new sheet must be inserted into the machine.
A concomitant object of the invention is to provide an attachment for typewriters and like impression producing machines in which the parts normally projecting from the machine in actual use may be readily collapsed or fully separated from the machine to facilitate the placing of the machine into a compact traveling case or the like.
With the above objects in view, the invention resides in the provision of a combined edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for portable typewriters, ofiice typewriters and like impression producing machines which comprises essentially an elongated edge setting first component and a preferably extensible and retractible sheet supporting second component which is connected with the first component. The first component is connectable to the carriage of a typewriter rearwardly of and in parallelism with the paper roller, and the second component preferably extends in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the first component. The connection between the two components preferably consists of a pivot bearing which comprises a first set of bearing members connected with the first component and a second set of bearing members connected with the second component. One set of these bearing members is preferably elastically defiectable so as to be readily separable from the other set, which enables a typist to rapidly separate the second component form the first component.
The second component comprises a carrier which is directly connected with the first component and at least one extension member which is slidably cormected to the carrier and is preferably received in an elongated channel formed in the front face of the carrier. The latter is preferably provided with suitable stop means to prevent complete withdrawal of the extension member from the channel of the carrier, and one of such stop means may be mounted on a resilient tongue of the carrier which is readily deflectable so as to permit complete separation of the extension member from its carrier. If the second component comprises two extension members, the second extension member is preferably mounted in the first extension member in the same manner as described above in connection with the mounting of an extension member in the carrier.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following detailed description of certain specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the composite attachment with portions of the edge setting component broken away and with the sheet supporting component in partly collapsed position;
FIG. 2 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the sheet supporting component in almost fully extended position;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged partly elevational and partly sectional view of a slightly modified pivot bearing which connects the edge setting component with the sheet supporting component; and
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragnmentary transverse section through the sheet supporting component in collapsed position.
Referring now in greater detail to the illustrated embodiment, and first to FIG. 1, there is shown a combined edge setting and sheet supporting attachment A for typewriters and like impression producing machines which comprises an edge setting first component 1 and a sheet supporting second component 4, 5, 6, which latter is pivotally secured to the first component It for angular displacements about an axis which is parallel with the longitudinal direction of the edge setting component. The latter assumes the shape of an elongated substantially flat strip made of a metallic but preferably of a synthetic plastic material, and is formed with an edge setting scale 1a comprising graduations which, when the attachment is used on a regular portable typewriter, are usually numbered from O to 90. Adjacent to each of its longitudinal ends, the strip 1 is formed with one or more openings 1b for the passage of bolts, screws or rivets, not shown, by means of which the attachment A is fastened to the carriage rearwardly of the paper roller in an impression producing machine. As is known, the manually shiftable margin stops in certain portable as well as in certain oflice typewriters are located rearwardly of the edge setting scale of the carriage which facilitates the setting of such margin stops to a new position by looking at the position of the edges of a paper sheet with respect to a second scale which is also located on the carriage but in front of the paper roller. The graduations on both scales are normally the same so that an operator desiring to write a column extending say between the graduations numbered and 75 is assisted in properly setting the margin stops.
The sheet supporting second component 4, 5, 6 is of the extensible and collapsible or retractible type and extends in a direction preferably substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the edge setting component 1. This second component is preferably secured to the central portion of the component 1 and is pivotable about two aligned pivot axles here shown as laterally extending projections 3:: located at the outer sides of two bearing flange members 3 forming part of the preferably trapeziform main body portion or carrier 4. The pivot axles 3a are received in complementary seats 212 formed in two spaced bearing plate members 2 forming integral parts of and preferably extending at right angles from the general plane of the first component 1. The flanges 3 and the bearing members 2 constitute the pivot bearings for the second component 4, 5, 6. The seats 2b are aligned in a direction parallel with the longitudinal direction of the component 1 so that the entire sheet supporting second component, including the plate like trapeziform carrier 4 and two extension members 5, 6, is pivotable about an axis which is also parallel with the longitudinal direction of the first component 1, i.e. about the axis which is common to the pivot axles 3a and to the seats 2b.
The entire sheet supporting second component preferably consists of the same material as the first component 1, e.g. of a suitable synthetic plastic such as transparent or at least translucent Plexiglas (trademark) or the like. This material is sufficiently rigid but is elastically deformable Which is important for the reasons to be fully explained hereinbelow.
It will be noted that the flanges 3 are integrally connected with the carrier 4 at their ends distant from the component 1, and that an elongated open slot 9 is formed in the carrier 4 adjacent to each flange 3, each of these slots 9 extending from the lower end 4' of the carrier 4 in a direction away from the first component 1. Such construction renders it possible to elastically deflect the flanges 3 about their connections with the carrier 4 in order to permit insertion of pivot axles 3a into the respective seats 2b. In fact, it is preferable to select the spacing between the bearing members 2 in such a way that the flanges 3 are permanently biased toward each other when the pivot axles 3a are received in the seats 2b in order to generate a certain amount of friction between the abutting faces of the flanges 3 and the bearing members 2 which insures that the sheet supporting component 4, 5, 6 may remain in a given angular position. Also, the pivot axles are then automatically centered in their seats 2b.
Though it is possible to mount the flanges 3 in such a way that the sheet supporting second component 4, 5, 6 will be free to rotate through nearly 270 degrees with respect to the first component 1., i.e. if the pivot axles 3a are close to the rear longitudinal edge 1' of the component i, it may be advisable to form at least one of the bearing members 2 with a stop shoulder it) which arrests the carrier 4 in a given position such as is considered most suited for proper support of a sheet.
The front face of the carrier 4 is formed with a comparatively shallow channel 11 of uniform width which is bounded by two undercut inclined lateral Walls 4aextending in directions perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the first component 1. The first extension member 5 assumes the form of a flat plate like body having dovetailed longitudinal edge portions 52 which slidably engage with the inclined walls 4a so that the entire extension member 5 is longitudinally slidable within and is fully or nearly fully receivable in the channel 11. As is shown in FIG. 2, the upper end of the channel 11 is bounded by a transverse stop means 12 forming an integral part of the carrier 4 and defining a transverse arresting shoulder 4, which extends into the path of a cupped protuberance 7 projecting from the rear face of the extension member 5 and located adjacent to the end 5' of the extension member which end is closer to the component 1. Thus, the arresting shoulder 41 and the protuberance 7 control the extent to which the extension member 5 may be moved in the channel 11 in a direction away from the first component 1. The protuberance 7 defines an open recess which receives a friction producing insert 8 of discoid or any other suitable form. This insert 8 may consist of felt, rubber or any other such material which will be elastically compressed by the carrier 4 so as to frictionally hold the first extension member 5 in any given position with respect to the carrier excepting when the extension member 5 is actually grasped by the fingers and is moved longitudinally in its channel 11. The insert 8 is of particular advantage when the second component 4, 5, 6 is held in substantially vertical position because the extension member 5 then tends to slide in its channel 11 toward the first component.
As is clearly shown in FIG. 2, the insert 8 projects beyond the protuberance 7, and the latter is integral with the rear face of a resilient tongue 50 bounded by two open slots 13 which extend inwardly from the lower edge portion of the first extension member 5. Thus, the tongue 50 may be slightly deflected in a direction away from the carrier 4 which also contributes to the friction generating action of the insert 8 because the latter is then pressed with a greater force against the bottom wall of the channel 11.
The front face of the extension member 5 is formed with a shallow channel 14 which is somewhat narrower than and parallel with the channel 11. The channel 14 is bounded by two undercut inclined walls 5a of the extension member 5, these walls slidably engaging with the dovetailed edge portions 62 of the second extension memher 6 which is slidably received in the channel 14. The rear face of the second extension member 6 is formed with a protuberance 7 receiving in its recess a second friction producing insert 8' which is slidable along the bottom wall of the channel 14 so as to insure that the extension member 6 will remain in a given position with respect to the extension member 5 unless the typist actually grasps the extension member 6 to intentionally overcome the friction between the insert 8' and the first extension member 5. At its upper end, the channel 14 is bounded by a transverse stop member 15 which defines a transverse arresting shoulder 5d adapted to engage with the protuberance 7' so as to prevent complete separation of the extension 6 from the extension 5. It will be noted that the protuberance 7' is located at that end 6' of the second extension member 6 which is closest to the first component 1, and that the shoulder 5d is at that end of the extension member 5' which is most distant from the component 1 so that the sheet supporting second component 4, 5, 6 may attain a considerable length when moved to its fully extended position. A flexible tongue, similar to the tongue 50 of the first extension member 5, may but need not be provided on the second extension member 6, excepting when this member 6 slidably receives a third extension member, not shown.
The front face of the first extension member 5 is formed with a transverse stop member 5b which forms part of the elastic tongue 5c and which is located adjacent to the lower end 5, i.e. adjacent to that end of the extension member 5 which is closer to the first component. This stop member 5b is formed with an upwardly facing transverse arresting shoulder 16 (see FIG. 2) which serves as an abutment for the lower end 6 of the second extension member 6 and normally prevents the latter from moving beyond the front stop member 5b. Thus, the stop members 5b and 15 of the first extension member 5 determine the extent to which the second extension member 6 may be moved in the channel 14.
The carrier 4 is formed with a resilient tongue 4c which is similar to the tongue 50 and is located at the lower end of the channel 11, i.e. adjacent to the lower edge portion or end 4' of the carrier 4. This second tongue 4c is formed by two open slots 4b provided in the comparatively thin bottom wall of the channel 11 and extendin upwardly from the lower end 4 in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the first component 1. The front face of the tongue 4c carries a transverse stop means 4a which defines a transverse stop shoulder 17 adapted to abut against the lower end 5 of the first extension member 5 and to thereby limit the movement of this extension member in a direction toward the first component 1.
The second component 4, 5, 6 may be taken apart as follows:
As shown in FIG. 1, the stop means 4d of the carrier 4 is slightly spaced from the lower end 4" of the tongue 40 so that the latter forms a small lip 4e which may be depressed by the fingernail of a typist so as to deflect the entire tongue 40 in rearward direction and to thereby remove the stOp means 4d from the path of the lower end 5 and of the protuberance 7 on the first extension member 5. The latter is then readily removable from the channel 11 together with the extension member 6 which remains in the channel 14 and is retained therein by frictional engagement of the bottom wall in the channel 14 with the elastically compressible insert 8'. Once the extension members 5, 6 are separated from the carrier 4, they may be readily taken apart merely by deflecting the lip 18 of the tongue 50 in rearward direction so that the lower end 6 and the protuberance '7' of the extension member 6 may move over the stop member 5b of the extension member 5. Cf course, the separation of the extension members 5, 6 is more convenient if the carrier 4 is already separated from the first component 1. This may be accomplished by pressing the flanges 3 toward each other so that the pivot axles 3a may be withdrawn from the seats 2b.
At its upper end, the second extension member 6 is formed with a transverse stop member 19 which serves as a handgrip means for facilitating sliding movements of the extension member 6 with respect to the member 5. Furthermore, the stop member 19 may act as a means for engaging with the top horizontal edge of a sheet which is inserted into a typewriter or another impression producing machine to cause a bending of the typed sheet portion and to thereby indicate to the typist that the last typed line is very close to the lower horizontal edge of the sheet. The front face of the second extension member 6 is provided with a vertical scale 20. The graduations of this scale may be spaced apart at distances corresponding to the distance between a pair of lines typed on the paper sheet, the scale 20 having its zero end adjacent to the top end of the extension member 6, i.e. adjacent to the stop member 19, so that the typist can readily observe that only say five more lines maybe typed on a sheet when the upper horizontal edge of the sheet reaches the corresponding graduation on the scale 20.
FIG. 3 illustrates a slight modification of the invention according to which the bearing flange members 3 are formed with preferably conical, frustoconical or concave seats 3b for reception of complementary pivot axles 2a forming part of the bearing members 2. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the pivot axle 2a is of frustoconical shape and extends into a similarly configurated seat 3b. Such slightly modified construction in no way changes the operation of the attachment. It is advisable to utilize conical or hemispherical pivot axles because such pivot axles will be automatically centered in their respective seats when the finger pressure upon the flanges 3 is terminated.
As is shown in FIG. 4, the channel 11 of the carrier 4 is formed with a somewhat deeper central portion or depression 11a, and a similar central depression 14a is formed in the channel 14 of the first extension member 5. Such channels will add to the flexibility of the carrier 4 and of the first extension member 5 to thus facilitate an insertion of the member 5 into the channel 11, and to facilitate an insertion of the second extension member 6 into the channel 14. In other words, the parts of the second component 4, 5, 6 are assembled in a manner similar to the manner of assembling the longitudinally movable parts of a slide rule. I
It will be seen that we provide a composite attachment which may be adjusted or taken apart without requiring any tools but which can be frictionally held in any selected position when in actual use. The feature that the entire second component or certain parts of this component may be separated from the edge setting component is particularly advantageous in portable typewriters because the space within the traveling cases of such machines is often very small and would not accommodate a typewriter with the attachment A connected to its carriage.
As stated above, the entire attachment preferably consists of a transparent or translucent synthetic plastic material, e.g. Plexiglas, which may be readily cleaned, which is sufliciently flexible, and which is sufliciently re sistant to withstand the stresses arising in its actual use.
ll parts of the attachment may be manufactured by an injection molding process.
The separability of parts constituting the second component 4, 5, 6 is of particular advantage because the entire second component may be replaced by one comprising a single extension member or two or more extension members. Alternately, the extension member 5 or 6 may be replaced by a longer or shorter one, if desired, while the carrier 4 remains attached to the bearings 2.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic and specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, 'such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component having scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising at least two slidably interconnected members; and pivot bearing means for connecting said second component with said first component in such a way that the members of said second component are substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component, said bearing means comprising aligned pivot axle means connected with one of said components and seats for said axle means formed in the other component.
2. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component having scale means for facilit-atingthe setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising at least two slidably interconnected members; and pivot bearing means for connecting said second component with said first component in such a way that the members of said second component are sub stantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component, saidbearing means comprising a first pair of bearing members connected to one of said components and .a second pair of bearing members connected with the other component and articulately joined with said first pair of bearing members, one pair of said bearing members elastically connected with its respective component whereby the second component may be separated from said first component by elastically deforming said one pair of bearing members sufficiently to permit a separation thereof from the other pair of said bearing members.
3. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component having. scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier and at least one elongated extension member slidably connected with said carrier; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said extension member is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component, said connecting means comprising a first pair of spaced bearing members connected with said first component, a second pair of spaced bearing members connected with and adapted to be elastically deflected relative to said carrier, pivot axle means. connected with each of one pair of said bearing members, and a seat formed in each of the other pair of said-bearing members for receiving said pivot axle means.
4. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a, paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having afront face and formed with an elongated channel in said front face, an elongated extension member slidably received in said channel; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said channel is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.
5. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face and formed with an elongated channel in said front face, a first elongated extension member slidably received in said channel and having a front face formed with a second channel parallel with said first channel, and a second elongated extension member slidably received in said second channel; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said channels are substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.
6. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face, a first end, a second end, and formed with a channel in said front face, said channel extending between said ends and said carrier comprising first and second stop means in said channel adjacent to said first and second end, and an extension member slidably received in said channel and having a rear face formed with a protuberance engagea'ble with said stop means to prevent complete withdrawal of said extension member from said channel; and bearing means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that one end of said carrier is adjacent to said first component, said channel is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.
7. An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face, a first end, a second end, and formed with a channel in said front face, said channel extending between said ends and said carrier comprising first and second stop means in said channel adjacent to said first; and second end, a first extension member slidably received in said channel, said extension member having a rear face, a first end, a second end and a protuberance extending from said rear face adjacent to said last mentioned; first end, said protuberance engageable with said'first and'sccond stop means to prevent a separation of said extension member from said carrier, and said extension member having a front face formed with a second channel parallel with said first mentioned channel and comprising a first and second stop member in said second channel respectively adjacent to said first and second end thereof, and a second extension member slidably received in said second channel, said second extension member having a rear face, an end closer to the first end of said first extension member and a second protuberance at saidend thereof, said second protuberance engageable with the stop members of said first extension member to prevent a separation of said second extension member from said first extension member, said carrier also comprising an elastic tongue in at least said first channel adjacent the first end thereof and connected to said first stop means, said tongue adapted to be deflected in a direction to permit Withdrawal of said first extension member from said first channel; and bearing means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that the first end of said carrier is adjacent to said first component and that said channels are substantially perpendicular to said first component.

An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face, a first end, a second end, and formed with a channel in said front face, said channel extending between said ends and said carrier comprising an elastic tongue in said channel adjacent to said first end thereof, first stop means connected with said tongue and second stop means adjacent to the second end thereof, and an extension member slidably received in said channel and having a rear face formed with a protuberance engageable with said stop means to normally prevent complete withdrawal of said extension member from said channel, said tongue adapted to be deflected in a direction to permit a withdrawal of said extension member from said channel; and bearing means for pivotally connecting said carrier to said first component in such a way that said tongue is adjacent to said first component and that said channel is substantially perpendicular to said first component.

An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component formed with scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier having a front face, a first end, a second end, and formed with a channel in said front face, said channel extending between said ends and said carrier comprising first and second stop means in said channel adjacent to said first and second end, and an extension member slidably received in said channel and having a rear face formed with a protuberance engageable with said stop means to prevent complete withdrawal of said extension member from said channel; elastic friction producing means connected with said protuberance and engaging with the carrier in said channel for frictionally holding said extension member against movement with respect to said carrier; and bearing means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that one end of said carrier is adjacent to said first component, said channel is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.

An edge settin and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component having scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a sheet supporting second component comprising a carrier, a first extension member longitudinally slidably connected With said carrier, first friction producing means inserted between said carrier and said extension member for frictionally holding said extension member against sliding movement with respect to said carrier, a second extension member longitudinally slidably connected With said first extension member, and second friction producing means inserted between said first and second extension members for frictionally holding said second extension member against sliding movement with respect to said first extension member; and pivot bearing means for articulately connecting said carrier with said first component in such a way that said extension members are perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component, said bearing means comprising first bearing members connected with said first component and elastically deformable second bearing members connected with said carrier and releasably engaging with said first bearing members.

An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated first component including scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet; a second component comprising means for supporting a sheet; and means for pivotally connecting said second component to said first component in such a manner that the second component extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.

An edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated first component including scale means for facilitating the setting of the edges of a paper or like sheet, said first component connectable with the carriage of a typewriter; a second component comprising a carrier and at least one elongated sheet supporting extension member slidably received in said carrier; and means for pivotally connecting said carrier with said first component in such a manner that said extension member is substantially perpendicular to said first component and said second component is pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.

A combined edge setting and sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, said attachment comprising, in combination, an elongated edge setting first component including scale means for facilitating the setting of paper edges in a typewriter; and a sheet supporting second component comprising at least two relatively movable members and articulately connected with said first component in such a way that said members are movable in directions substantially perpendicular to said first component and pivotable about an axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal extension of said first component.

In a sheet supporting attachment for typewriters and the like, comprising a carrier having a first and a second end and formed with a channel between said ends, first and second stop means adjacent the first and second ends, respectively, and an extension member slidably received in said channel and engageable with said stop means to normally prevent complete withdrawal of said extension member from said channel; an elastic tongue in said channel adjacent the first end thereof and connected to said first stop means, said tongue adapted to be deflected in a direction to permit withdrawal of said extension member from said channel.
