D. H. JENNINGS AND JAMES BoUNDs, or BRIDGEPORT, CONNEC- rlcu'r.
vLette/rs Patent No. 91,749, dated June 22,1869.
IMPRovED BEDs'rr-.An
The Schedule referredto in these Lettera Patent.' and making part -of the name.
To all whom may concern:
' Be it known that we, D. H. J ENNXNGS and JAMES BOUNDS, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Bedsteads; and we dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear,.and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification, in which the drawing represents a longitudinal section of our bedstead with one side removed.
The nature of our invention consists in constructing and attaching to a bedstead an adjustable frame, by which the body of an invalid can be raised or lowered without disturbing his lower limbs, the said object being effected by means of a geared shaft operating on levers in the mannerset forth.
A represents a section of the bedste'ad.
G designates the stationary slats, which aresecnred in position in the ordinary way.
D is a bar, the lower. end of which is pivoted to the inside of the rail E, a similar bar being pivoted on the opposite rail of the bedstead.
d d d are slats, the ends of which are secured to bars D D.
F represents an arm, pivoted at its upper end to bar'D, each bar being furnished with au arm.
g designates a shait, theends of which rest in bearings fastened `to the bed-posts directly under the side rails. j
On lthe said shaft is hungthe pinion h.
m designates a secondzshaft, which has its bearings on the inner side of the bed-post. and at right angles with shaft g. On the inner end of shaft m, is the wormwbeel s, which gears into pinion h.
On the outer end of shaft m is fastened the wheel N, by' which said shaft is operated.
erepresents a cord, one end of which is secured to the lower end of arm F, and tbe other end fastened to the shaft g, a similar cord being also attached to the opposite arm F.
The cords e, it will be observed, are made siciently long to admit of the bars D descending to a hoiizontal position and when it'is desired'to elevate the body of the invalid, byturning the wheel N from left to right, the worm-wheel s will act on pinion vh, and give motion to shaft g, so't'hat tbe cord cv will be wrapped around the said shaft, and thus draw the arms F upward.
By the elevation ofthe arms, the bars D canbe raised to any desired angle to accommodate the invalid.
Having thus described our invention,
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is,V
The combination of shafts m g, wheel N, pinion h, arm F, cords e e, and lever D, when all are arranged to operate as described.
' In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we' affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
' JAMES BOU-NDS.
D. H. JENNINGS.
