W. DYATT.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING SKYLIGHTS.
No. 108,572! Patented Oct; 25, 1870.

WILLIAM DYA'IT'JI, OF NEW YORK, Y.
Letters Patent No. 108,572, dated October 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR OPERATING SKY-LIGHTS.
The Schedgle referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Wnlmlm DYATT, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Device for Operating Sky-Lights, &c., of which the following is a spociii' cation.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents a sky-light, hinged at one side a to its frame.
To the under side of this sky-light a segment, 15, is hinged, capable of turning or swinging on the center-pin o, and provided on one side with teeth b,into which a worm-wheel, ll, fixed in a suitable frame, E, attached to the framing D, is made to work.
The segment B moves in a suitable recess in the frame E, provided with apin or friction-roller, n, hearing against the back of the segment B, so as to keep thereby the teeth of said segment always in gear with the worm-wheel (Z. 7
Upon the shaft of this worm-wheel a pinion, 1', is fixed, meshing into a corresponding wheel, at, attached to a shaft, provided with a wheel or pulley, w, operated through the band or cord as. p
When the cord 2: is pulled, either at one or at the other side, the pulley 20 will be turned. in either one or the other direction, communicating thereby this motion through the gear-wheels m and v to the wormwheel (Z, which works into the teeth b on the segment B, and moves thereby this segment B, and consequent-ly the sky-light A, either upward or downward, and from the nature of this gearing firmly se cures this sky-light in any position the same may have been moved, without any further fastening.
In some cases the shaft of the worm-wheel ll may be continued downward, andthe gearing to operate the same, applied at its lowerend.
Instead of attaching the segment B directly to the sky-light A, the same may be applied to two levers, forming a knuckle-joint, one end of which is attached to the sky-light and the other end to the framing, while the segment is attached to the joint which connects the two levers.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a sky-light, A, of the segment B, worm-wheel 4, pin or friction-roller n, wheels c and an, pulley w, and cord x, operating together substantially as and for the purpose hereinhefore set forth.
WILLIAM DYATT.
