To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JACOB THOMAS Moran, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milford Square, county of Bucks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im .rroveinents in Rule- Clamps, of which the following is a specification/reference being had to the accompanyin drawing, forming a part thereof, 111 which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 1906, relates to clamlps for holding and ongated rectangular contour, the special application of the device bein the retention of a folded twofoot, or 0t er length, measuring rule, in; such a manner that a 'carpenter' or other; artisan may constantly have it in handy position ready for use. i

The object of the invention is to rovide a continuously operative device of t is character which is adapted to clamp the rule in such a manner as not to scratch or mar the faces thereof which contain the scale, and I which is inexpensive, durable and simple in construction.

In practice it has been found that when my rule holding device, for which said patent was granted, has been subjected to onlg or hard usage, the seam ai/ which the we s are joined is insufficient to hold the walls in pro er working position and that then the ru e often falls out to the great annoyance of the operator. It is to obviate this difiiculty that'n'iy present invention has been devised.

The invention will be hereinafter fully described/and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.

The device embodies a rectangular box A, formed by the parts 1, 2, *3, 4 and 5, of

the blank B, which is composed of resilient sheet metal, the free end or edge part 6, of the part 1, of the front wall inconiunction with the edge part 7, of the front we] section 5, forming a oint 8, where,the said edges overla ping each other, and bearing one on the otlier, add strength and rigidity to the structure, and prevent the parting of'the said edges one from the other. 1

Extended upwardl from the'front wall is a slightly curved flange 9, and extended upward] and then downwardly from the rear we] 3, is atongue 10, which is provided with a slot 11.

Depending from the lower end of thefront 7 wall is a tongue" 12, and located opposite 7 thereto and extended from the lower' end of the rear wall 3", is a similar tongue 13, these said tongues'are perfectly flat and smooth for contact with the marked faces of the rule without liability of Inarring the same, all

clamping action being exerted bythe clamping 'aws which bear on the, reinforced ed as of t e rule, as will be hereinafter fully e-Q scribed. Extended from the lower end of m e wall 2, is an inwardly bowed clampthe sid ing jaw 1 4, and a similar jaw 15, is extended from the oppositewalle, these are adapted for frictional contact ,dwvith the reinforced edges of the r is, for clamping and retaining the same wit in the device.- The side walls are also/provided with outwardly curved flanges f6 and 17'! But the tongue 10, may also he placed back of the upper edge part of any pocket, 8. loop or a belt forming part of the garments of a wearer, whereby said part is clamped between the tongue 10, and the rear wall 3, of the box, and the device is retained in position and prevented h'oni accidental displacement by means of the bar C, which presses into the fabric; and withal the device can be readily removed by swin ing the lever C, back into osition shown by *ig. 1, of the drawings. 1' aving placed the device in suitable position, a rule can be inserted or removed either from the top or bottom, the bowed parts of the sprung jaws 14 and 15 securely clamping and retaming it in place.

Having thus described my invention, what ters Patent, is:

A clarnp for retaining elongated objects, comprising a rectangular box made of resilient material, having a seem in its front wall where the adjacent edges overlap and bear on each other, having an outwardly curved flange extended from the upper end of its i front wall, and similar flanges ex ided from i its side walls, and an inwardly bowed clampof its side walls, and a tongue having a slot and extended upwardly and then down wardly from the upper end of its rear wall, and fastenin means comprising a bar havin a swinging lever working pivotally in said slot and in" connection with said tongue adapted to secure detaehably said clamp to a garment, substantially shown and described.
