17o all whom 'it may concern:
`Beit known that I, SAMUEL B. SWIFT, a
lcitizen of the'` United States, residing vat lKnoxville, in the county ot' Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and usef which the following is a envelope. The object of the present invention is to miprove the construction of envelops and to t vely inexpensive envelop having means for e e tuallypreventing itA from being opened without detection.
With these and other objects in view, the
. invreiition' consists in the construction and novflleombination of parts hereinafter fully -described, lillustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out inthe claimshercto appended. i In the drawingf Figure `l is a rear elet-'ation of an envelop constructed ,in accordance with this invention.' Fig. 2 1s a longitudinal sectional view of the sametaken on the line Cf-X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sec'- i )nal view taken on the line y-y of Fig. 1. g. 4 is a plan view of the envelop showing the same before it is' folded.
Like numerals, of reference.1 designate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawing. c
The 'envelop consists of a single sheet of .paper or other suitable material, andthe central portionthereof constitutes the front 1 of theenvelop, which is provid-ed lwith upper and. lower side iiaps 2 and 3 and end iiaps 4 and 5, the body or blank being folded on the dotted lines c and b of4 Fig. 4 to form the envelop.
The end'iiaps are tapered as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and the end iiap 4 is provided -with a reduced longitudinal extension 6, havinv .a gummed outer portion 7 and provlde at itslnner end withV a 'transverse slit or slot 8-to receive a tongue 9 ofthe other end flap 5. The tongue 9, which extends longitudinally froml the end lflap 5, is provided with a substantially arrowshaped headl 10, ,which is adapted to be passed throu h the slot oropening 8 of the extension. he lateral] p extending portions of the head may, be fol edinwardly on the tongue to facilitate the introduction of the 'A Specification of Letters Patent.-

tongue in the slot 8, and after the head 10 has been passed through the slot 8 the' sides of the head may be' unfolded.
The gummed portion '7 of the extension is adapted to enga e the end flap 5 adjacent to the inner end ol the tongue 9, and any at# tempt` to open either end 'of the lenvelop will tear or; injure the tongue and the extension which vi' ill indicate by such injured condition that the envelop has beenv tampered xii-ith or opened.
.The upper side flap 2, which is tapered,l has its side and `end edges 11 and'12 gummed for engaging the exterior of the lower side -iiap 3, which has its side edges 13 gummed to engage the outer faces of the end iiaps 4 and 5. The lower side flap is'provided at its end with a slot or slit 14 disposed longitudinally of the envelop, and adapted to receive a concealed breakable scaling strip 15, constructed of thin tissue paper, or other suitable material, and secured at its end 16 by adhesive material to the inner face of the upper side lap 2 adjacent to the hinged edge thereof. ,The 'sealing strip, which is disposed transversely of the envelop, has its other end 17 secured between the side iiaps 2 and 3 by the gum or othergadhesivc material at the end of the upper side flap 2.
In practice, after the side ilaps have been folded down upon the end flaps and sealed, the outer end of the sealing strip will be torn oii close to the end edge of the upper flap 2, the end 17 of the sealing strip beingl yshown protruding slightly in Figs. 1 and 3 of the -drawi'ngto illustrate the construction more clearly. Theouter. face of the lower side flap 3 is provided adjacent to its hinged edge with a roughened weakened surface formed by a plurality of indentations or partial perforations 18, and the upper side lap is pro-v vided at its` outer edgewith a similar roughthe envelop will tear or otherwise injure the concealed sealing strip 15, or the tongue and the extension of the end iaps.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
l. An envelop provided with opposite end flaps, one ol the. end flaps being provided with an extension having a guinined outer portion and provided at the inner portion with a slot, and the other end iiap heilig engaged by the gunnned portion of the extension and having a tongue arranged to be passed through the slot of the extension and provided with an enlarged head l'or preventing the withdrawal ofthe tongue, upper and lower side flaps, and a transversely disposed sealing strip secured at one end to the upper side lap and engaging the lower side ilap and having its free end arranged in position to be secured by the upper side flap to the seal of the envelop. i
2. An envelop comprising a' front, and an end flap having a slot, an opposite end flap provided' with a tongue arranged to be passed through the slot and having` a head, upper and lower side flaps, one of the side flaps having a slot, and a transversely disposed sealing strip constructed of thin breakable material and secured at one end to the upper side l'lap and arranged to be passed through the slot of the lower side 'llap, the free end ol the sealing strip being located eXteriorly of the side ilap in position to be secured to the saine by the upper side flap upon the sealing of the envelop.
3. An envelop comprising a front, an end flap provided with an extension having a gummed outer portlon and provided at the inner portion with a slot, an opposite end i i 1 l ilap provided with a longitudinal longue iaving an arrow-shaped head and arranged to be passed through the said slot, upper and lower side flaps provided w-ith weakened roughened portions, the lower side flap having a slot, and a transversely disposed sealing strip constructed ol: thin breakable material, and secured at one end to the other side flap and arranged to be passed through the slot of the lower side ilap, the lree end of the sealing strip being arranged exteriorly of the lower side flap in position to be secured to the saine by the upper side flap in the sealing of the envelop.
4. An envelop comprising a front, an end flap provided with an extension having a gunnned outer portion and provided at the inner portion with a slot, an opposite end lap provided with a longitudinal tongue ai'h ranged to be passed through the said slot,
the latter end flap being also engaged by the I, gurnmed portion of the extension, upper and lower side ilaps, the lower side llap having a slot, and a transversel)rr disposed sealing strip constructed of thin breakable material and secured at one end to the other side flap and arranged to be passed through the slot of the lower side iiap, the free end of the sealing strip being located exteriorly of' the lewe r side ilap in position to be secured to the saine by the upper side vHap in the sealing ol' the envelop.
In testimony, that I claini t-he foregoing as my own, l have hereto allixed my. signature in the presence of two. witnesses.
