DRAWER-STOP..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March. 16,1909.
Application sied November 2 1, 190s. serial No. 463,801. i 'j State of Oregon, have invented a new and .Improved Drawer-Stop, of which'the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in stops adapted' for use in connection with the drawers of tables, desks, cabinets, and the like, and the object of the invention 1s to provide a stop, which may be readily applied without the 'use of any special tool, or without Involving changes in the con struction ofthe drawer oradjacent arts.,
My improved stop may be readf' y placed in position' or removed from any; kind of` a drawer, and serves not only to prevent the drawer from being accidentally pulled entirely out of the table,desk vor the like, but also serves to prevent papers or other contents of the drawer from sli pingvout' of the latter at the rear edge'thereolf).
r lhe device is extremely simple in -construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Reference is to be had tthe accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specilication, in' which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in Which- Figure 1 is a'perspective view of a'drawer provided with a stop constructed in yaccordance with my invention; Fig. 2 isa vertical' section through ,a portion of a chest of drawers, one of them'being. provided with my improved stop;`Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof the stop; andFig. 4 is a perspective piece of wire, so'bent. as to frictionally en-v v iew of a portion of 'a drawer 'showing a Slightly modified formof stop.
The stop is preferably formedof a single age with and gri the u er ed e of the rear vall of the draweii and tlexpangd a suiiicient distance above the same to engage with the cross cleat, stop, bar or other portion ofthe table, desk, cabinet or the like, which lies directly above the'opening into which'the drawer extends. v
In the specific form illustrated in the 'crawings, the wire is bentto form ai clam'pfor engaging with the wall of the drawer, .an
upwardly extending stop for engagement with a cleat, brace or transverse member of the table or,other piece of furniture, a laterally extending 'connecting portion between f said stop and said clamping portion, andservof its vertical adj ustment', but a so serving to prevent papers in' the' drawer from rising above the edge of the drawer and'slipping out at the rear thereof.
The clamping portion of the device is. formed of two jaws or clamping members for Wa and each of these jaws is formedof two portions of the wire spaced4 apart; Beginning at one end ofthe wire, the latteris bent to form a vertically extending portion 1-0 for engagement with the outer surface of the drawer wall, a horizontally extending portion 11 for enga ement with the top'edge of the drawer wall, a downwardly' extending portion 12, a laterally extending portion 13, vand an upwardly extending portion `14, all for engagement 'with the inner surface' ofthe drawer wall, and a horizontally extending portion 15, substantially in alinement with the ortion 11 and extending upwardly atan lportion o the sto At the lower end of this loop there is a t ird horizontally extending portion 17 lyingadjacenttofand substantially parallel with, the horizontal por'- lower ends, and the transverse' portion 13 is of sulicient length so that the portions 12 vv'ented from lateral turning or twisting;
the 4contact portion, and it is supported by the connecting link formed of the 'transverse spacewithin the drawer' and serves to prevent pa ers, or other similar articles,from
barl or other portion of the table, chestor -from being opened more than a, predeter- 1 `mined distance.
ing not only to support the'sto and' permit ang e to the wall. 1 At the front end .of the portion 15 the wir is bent upwardly and then downwardly to form aloo 16, which constitutes the contact portion 18 enga the drawer wa The loop 16 constitutes the stop proper or' 'rising a ove thefedge of the drawer.l Thel stop .16 .may contact with a transverse cleat,
engagement with opposite sides of the drawer tions. 11 vand 15. Across the top of' the j tions 10 and `18 preferably-diverge at t eir and 14 also diverge and the jaws are pre;
vloo portions `land 17. This connecting por i tion extends over a portion of the available cabinet' and effectively prevent the drawer 115).:
The lmk or support formed `oftiieporticn 3.5 17 ofthe Wire, may
'downwardly into. engagement with 4the inner surfac'eo the drawer, 'and i1 Wardly into-engagement 'with the inner sur ace ofthe bar or. f oleatabove' the drawer, there is-veryl little, if '-any tendeneytobend displace or distort the f'ormof'st'op disposedin the the outsi e ofthe drawer and on'the side adjacent the stopl proper,".whi1e the loop constituting the other jawv and vformed ofthe -thefinside of the drawer and opposite to they 1 sto proper.
instead ofbeingseeured to the' middle of the rear wall of the drawer'z may, if! desired, be secured to.. the sidewall of the. drawer, adjaoenttherearoorner, incase there isnooleat or stop above-'the drawer,y for in- 'S.t a11 e',-in a'flat#toptable. f .In ',Fig. 4 I; haveshown'aslightly modified ositi'onv above. vindicated-, and the -npwar ly. extending looped ottieni-16 hasbeen omitted.. In this form,jt e portions 115.a andi17a`are connected' attheir l,outer .endS' to form .a loop,v 'andl this loop .maypengage -jwith .the side. wall or other adjacent portion of `the table to reventtlne:- .withdrawal o f the'drawer. In this form, the terminal ortions 10a. and 18aare disposed on. y
avlng thus described my invention,. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 11.-,A'sto for drawers, including two gripping Vjaws for engagement with a wall of the drawer, and a laterall'y-extending .portion disposed over'a portion of the. open top ofthe drawer for retaining papers within the drawer land for preventingthe complete withdrawal of the drawer.
2. A stop for 'drawersf-having grip ing portionsfor engagement with the wall -olp the drawer and having-a laterally-extending portion terminating a ovethe plane of the open to ofthe drawe `f'for"*prevent'i ng the come pe ete withdrawal of' the drawer.
3. A stop for drawers formed ofwire and having gri ing portions for lengagement vwith'thewa ofthe drawerand having a portion integral with both of the gripping por- 4 tions and extending laterally therefrom sub stantia'lly in the plane of the top of the drawer. l l
4. A stop for drawers,. formed of a single v piece of wire and having ripping' portions or engagement with a'fwa ll oi the .drawer-, and having a laterally extending portion for retaining'pa ers withinthe drawerl and for preventingt e eompletewithdrawal of the drawer.
5.'. A stopfor drawers`,' formed of wire and including-two oppositely-disposed Clamping jaws .fprengagement with opposite sides of a drawer WalLalaterally rextending portion adapted to be' disposed over the drawer, and
"1 an upwardly; extending Contact portion car ried the free end thereof.4 J
y lsaid laterally extending portion at In testimony* whereof I have signed my name tothis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. j WILLIAM-C. HEANEY. Witnesses:
