Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH A. THOMAS, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Placket-Olosures, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in placket closures and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which can be readily applied to a skirt or other garment and which will operate in an eifective manner to prevent gaping or spreading of the parts connected thereby.

A further object of the invention is to design a placket closure in which the complemental stiffening strips are connected by lacing throughout their entire length when closed, and which is peculiarly designed to admit of the strips being quickly released from a closed position and swung apart or locked in a closed position.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a plan view of a placket closure embodying the invention, the same being shown in an open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device in a closed position, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the stiffening strips. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

A placket closure embodying the present invention comprises a pair of complemental stiffening strips having a pivotal connection at one end, the said strips having lacing slidably mounted thereon so as to hold the same in a closed position or permit them to swing apart as desired. These complemental stiffening strips are indicated at 1 and are each provided at one end with an eye 2 and at the opposite end with an extension 3. The body portion of each of the strips 1 comprises a pair of longitudinal bars 1 and 1 the outer bar 1 of each of the strips having a piece of tape 4 or like material attached in any suitable manner as by the stitching 4 thereto for the purpose of enabling the placket closure to be readily attached to a sition.

Lacing 5 extends around the inner longitudinal members 1 of the complemental stiffening strips and is slidably mounted upon the said longitudinal members so as to be moved toward or away from the pivot ends thereof. One end of this lacing 5 engages the eyes 2 so as to loosely connect the stiffening strips at the pivot end thereof, while the opposite end of the lacing is secured to a hook 6 at the lower end of a locking member or loop 6 designed to engage the extensions 3 for the purpose of locking the device in a closed po- It will thus be apparent that when the loop 6 is disengaged from the extensions the lacing 5 can be moved upon the longitudinal members 1 of the stiffening stri s toward the pivot end of the latter, there y enabling the said strips to be swung apart. When it is desired to lock the stiffening strips in a closed position the loop 6 is drawn toward the free ends thereof and placed in engagement with the extensions 3, the lacing 5 being thereby moved upon the longitudinal members 1 so as to connect the same throughout their entire length. The device is preferably formed of flexible molded rubber although this is entirely optional and any suitable material may be employed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a closure of the character described, the combination of a pair of complemental 1 strips pivotally connected at one end and each comprising a pair of spaced longitudinal members, one of the longitudinal members of each strip constituting a means for securing the strip to a garment, lacing extending around and slidably mounted upon the opposite longitudinal members of the complemental strips, and locking means cooperating with the lacing to hold the strips in a closed position.

2. In a closure of the character described, the combination of a pair of complemental strips each of which is provided at one end with an eye and is formed with a pair of spaced longitudinal members one of which constitutes a means for securing the strip to a garment, lacing extending around and slidably mounted upon the opposite longi tudinal members of the strips, one end of the lacing engaging the before mentioned eyes and loosely connecting the strips at one end thereof, and locking means cooperlongitudinal members of each strip constituting a means for securing the strip to a garment, lacing extending around and slidably mounted upon the opposite longitudinal members of the two strips, one end of the lacing engaging the before mentioned eyes and loosely connecting the strips at one end thereof, and a locking member connected to the opposite end of the lacing and designed to engage the extensions of the strips for holding the same in a closed position.
