Description

l tnited. tatt @atleet @Mita J. L. NETTLETON, OF WEST CHESHIRE, CONNECTICUT,. ASSIGNOR TO HIM-SELF AND F. CAFFREY, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 91,360, dated .Tune 15, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters APatent and making part of the same.
To altwhom 'it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. L. NETTLETON, of West Cheshire, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Ghurns; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this 'speciication, and represent, in f Figure l, a section ofthe vessel to which the vess'el is applied, with a side-view ot the churn;
Figure 2, a transvcrscsect-ionof thebeater;
Figure 3, a vertical central section; and in Figure 4, a side view, detached.
This invention relates more particularly to theconstruction of beaters for churns, 'and consists in a bow of wood, bent so as to form two legs, each leg chamfered toward the front edge,`ai'1d` secured together at their lower ends to prevent change of form, and provided at the centre of the bow with a nut or means of attachment to the revolving spindle.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the bow.
B, the two legs ofthe dash, which form the principal feature of ,my invention.
They are made from a single strip of wood, bent so as to form the bow A, and the two parallel legs B B, each of the ltwo legs chamfered toward its front edge, as seen in figs. 2 ande, thelower ends of the legs secured by a rod, C, which holds them in place to prevent their spreading.
At the centre of the bow I arrange a nut, D, by which the beater maybe attached to a vertical spindle, E, the said spindle passing through a column, F, resting upon a cover, G, and is provided with a pinion, H, at the upper end, and driven by a crank-gear, Y
I, so as 'to cause a revolution ofthe beaters.-
The cover is provided with apacking, so as to close the joint on the vessel over which it is placed.
The vessel itself may be any jar, pot, keg, or whatf ever may be convenient for the person desiring to use the churn, the cover, with the attachment, as shown and described, making in itself a complete article ot' manufacture.
The column is provided, for convenience, with a handle, L.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Nhat I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
11 A churn-dash, consisting of the bar A and the two legs B B, bent from a single piece of material, and constructed so as to be attached to the spindle E,
substantially in the manner set forth.
v 2. The'arra-ngement of the beaters, formed as described, and combined with the spindle E, column F, wheels H and I, and cover G, all in the manner as herein set forth.
J. L. NETTLETON. Witnesses:
A. J. TreBrrs, J. H. SHUMWAY.
