To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, OLE P. Onnitnma citizen of the United. States, and warrant machinist on board of S. S. Milwaukee, first rate, navy-yard, Mare Isla-nd, -Caliornia,
have invented certain new and. useful' Improvements 1n Air-Compressors; and I do er'eby declare the following to be a fulh clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the` the form of a tapered cylinder or casing u, made up of two sectlons bolted together, as
' a mnuber of vplates (l. Il', (Z2, d?, and d'4,-
shown at Z2.A Of-course, Vthis casing could be made in as many pieces, bolted to ether` as desired, andtcou'ld be made cylinc rical, instead of tapering, if desired. lVithin the cylinder is a fan structure consisting of plates c, c', c, c", c* and c, of'slightly less r iameter thanthe corresponding portion of the casing. Between these plates are located which completely 4till the casing and'are. a-ttached thereto by bolts(j passing through the casing and into said plates. Each of these'last-named plates i-s cut away at'the center, as shown at f. V
A series of fan' blaues, suon as g, are bolted to the plates c and d, and extend outwardlyV 11o theinterior-wallof the casing.
' At the center these fan'blades are cut. away,
leaving :he openingv f unobstructed. 'Each of the fanf'blades (fis, provided on each edge with a projecting flange through which bolts k pass into the corresponding pla-te.` On the other side of the late (l, and connect-ing it with the plate c', 1s another series of'rfan blades z', bolted, 'as 'already described, to plates c and'd. These faublades extend outwardly from a boss y', ou the plate c and do not touch the interior .of the casing a. These `fan blades are also cut away, as shown at lo, adjacent tov the ,opening f, to allow an entrance for 'the'air or steam. Each l ofthe plates c, c', c2, c, c* and c Pfo The sets of.
*which still further compresses specification at Letters meent'. Patented' ran-,16, 1909. Appleman una my s, im. sei-m N0. 319,241;
I .vide d with"a boss similartothe boss y' en gagl the supporting. shaft m, which is centra ly perforated,as shown at n.. These bosses are splined 'to the central shaft. The
end series offen blades o and 'p are bolted, 3
respectively, to the plate c and oneend g oi the casin and to the late c5an'd the othe;
end r of t e casing. T eend g of the casing is provided with an opening s, and the end 'r 1s provided with lan opening lz5.' The pipe u Vruns from the end r of the casing, forming a continuation of the opening t. This pipe is connected with a downwardly-prtecting" y bedelivery pipe v, stutling boxes an ing provided to prevent leaka ve 'of the com'- ressed a1r or steam.l The wlliole structure 1s supported by means of supports z and 1,'
the pipe u runningthrou h fthesupport z, j
and the shaft m runni t rough' a bearing in the su ort 1. Suitab e mean-s, not shown, are provi ed for revolving the whole structure, with theexception of the pipe c, the stuiing boxes and supports.
A space is left between the plates c'*y and de, near the central part othis machine, and
in this space is mounted a coiled pipe 21 which is connected to the two inner ends of the shaft m, which is made-in two parts.
This pipe is, of course, hollow, and-communicates with the lollow .bore n of the shaft m. A space 3 is left' on the outer edge of each' of the partitions or plates c, c', 02,03), c* and c between these partitions andthe casing, but the plates 4or partitions d, d d2 `al, and d4 have their outer edges fastened to the casing, but are ,cut away at-the center.
m being set in rapid motion, of the partition c is thrown outwardl by the fan blades z, a new supply entering the openings s. The a1r isl thus compressed hrough n blades are curved inthe opfq posite direction from that of the fan blades.l '9, as clearly shown in Fig, 2.
The operation is as follows :--Tl1e sha ft the airin front and forced to passing through the assage 3 4 where itis caught by the fan' bla es an drawn towards thel center of the action is repeated from one end tothe ,other 'of the device, the compression, owingtothe tapering size of he casing, increasing proortionately.
orced around to unduly heat the apparatus. In the drawing I have shown the casing and the artitions which are attached to the shafts, lfre- Vic?, the air; Tlus A At the central part, theair'is the' cooling pipe 2, so'as not sfo shown in Fig. 2. VSteam always enters turi volving together. i' Obviously, however, the
casing ht be` stationary and the shaft' alone revo ved. The form in the'drawing,
however, is. preferable`, as friction 'be tween the revolving fan blades and thepartitionsis avoided. 1 My' device can also be used. as a steam turbine without. change, the steam entering the 'air passages, said .fan blades on said partipipe v and passing 1n therreverse direction to that already described. In such a case,
'of course, no water would bel forced in through the pipe2, because no cooling actionl 1s desired, and this pipe, therefore, could be Y VWhen used as anv air compresson-the trance openmgs to the sets/of fan blades .maybe made .successively decreasing in size as the pressuremcreases, sothat the casing f need `not necessarily be ta red. fWhile I have thus described my invention, I donot wish to limit myself to the exact details shown and described, as these might be varied considerably @without ldeparting from the spirit of m' invention. vWhen constructs for turbine use only, fan blades 'i will lie-constructed same as vfan blades 3 butbent in op osite direction as shownin Fig. 2. If tur ine isf wanted to run in reverse direction, fan Rblades i and g I sa ` substantial-,ly as described.
