BASE-BALL CURVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed May 9, 1908. Serial No. 431,803.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IViLnUR VVARD VIN- QUEST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brady, in the county of Lincoln and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Base-Ball Curver, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to baseball curver-s, and more particularly to such as are adapted to be removably arranged on the fingers of the hand of a player, so that in pitching the ball may be easily curved.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, serviceable, and inexpensive ball curver adapted to be arranged on the fingers of a player, and having means for engaging the cover of the ball so that a decided curve may be imparted to the latter in pitching.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view showing the device in use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention it should be understood that a ball is caused to curve in throwing, by imparting a rotary motion to it as it leaves the hand. I provide a ball curver formed from an elastic material and adapted to be removably arranged on two of the adjacent fingers of a hand. The curver carries two metal plates having their faces suitably roughened for engaging the covering of a ball. As above mentioned, my device is adapted to be arranged on two adjacent fingers of the hand of a player, so that a better grip may be had on the ball in pitching, and a greater curve imparted thereto, as the rate of rotation is increased as it leaves the hand.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide an annular band 1 of elastic material such as rubber fabric or the like. Two of the opposite sides of the band are brought together and joined by sewing or in any other convenient manner, so that loops 2 are formed. These loops 2 are adapted to be removably arranged on two of the adjacent fingers of the hand of a player. Located on corresponding sides 3 of the loops 2, are metal plates a having prongs 5, which are adapted to be forced through the elastic material of the sides and bent upon themselves to form retainers (5, to hold the plates in position. The plates have studs 7 on their outer faces for engaging the cover of the ball. These studs may be formed in any suitable manner so that a rough surface is presented for engaging the cover of the ball, for example by forming perforations in the plates with ragged outwardly disposed sides.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
1. In a device of the class described, connected elastic hoops adapted to be removably arranged on two of the adjacent fingers of a hand, plates removably arranged on two of the corresponding faces of said loops, and means on said plates for engaging the cover of a ball.
2. In a device of the class described, a band of flexible material, said band having two of its opposite sides joined to one another whereby two loops of substantially equal size are formed, metal plates removably arranged upon two of the corresponding faces of said loops, said plates having prongs adapted to be bent upon themselves at the inside of said loops to hold said plates in position, and means on said plates for engaging the cover of a ball.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILBUR WARD WVINQUEST.
