ADJUSTABLE CHIMNEY-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 14, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Chimney-Caps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable chimney caps.
The object of the invention is to provide a chimney cap with means thereon for attaching the ca to the corners of a chimney regardless 0' whether or not the corners of the cap are in direct alinement with the corners of the chimney as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In a detail description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
The cap plate 1 is essentially of a rectangular shape and is provided with the usual ring 2 surrounding the opening in said plate and for the attachment of the usual chimney cowl not shown. At each corner of the cap plate 1, there is a cleat 3 which is provided with a screw-threaded aperture for a cap screw 6.
4 designates a clamping arm which is solid throughout and has its end terminated in downwardly-extendd flanges 5 which embrace the converging sides of the corner of the chimney to maintain the ends of the cap plate in rigid attachment therewith. The arms 4 extend through the cleats 3 and are secured in position by the cap screws 6 after the adjustment of said arms is made relative to the corners of the chimney. In
cases where the distance between the four edges of the cap plate and the four edges of the chimney are uniform, the arms 4 may occupy a central position in the cleats, but it often is found that the distances between the four sides of the chimney and the four edges of the cap plate are not the same. In such .cases, however, my fastening means are equally available; this is due to the fact that the arms 4 may be moved laterally within the cleats 3 or on either side of the center of the cleats and in such positions may be held firmly by the cap screws 6.
In Fig. 1, the clamping arms are shown in their extreme lateral positions; in such positions, the cap screws 6 engage a sufficient portion of said arms to insure a ri id clamping of said arms against the cap pIate.
In Fig. 3, the range of adjustment of the clamping arms is also shown, for example, the movement obtainable with the cap screw 6 acting as the pivot of the clamping arm, and with the clam ing arm moved laterally to one side of sai screw and in a position where the end of the screw will engage the arm on one side of its center. The extreme or greater range of adjustment is not commonly required, but it is frequently found necessary to shift the clamping arms more or less on one side of the center of the cleats in order that the corners of the chimney may be properly engaged; this is enabled by constructing the arms solid throughout their lengths and breadths.
I claim:
An adjustable chimney cap, comprising a base plate with a dome-sha ed extension surrounding an o ening in sai plate, a cleat at each corner 01 said plate, and non-apertured clamping arms lying within said cleats, said clamping arms having their engaging ends extended downwardly and shaped to engage the corners of the chimney, said clamping arms being adapted to lie in the center of said cleats or on either side of the center of said cleats, and binding screws penetratin said cleats and holding said arms in eit er of said positions.
