Description

'my invention, I will describe its construction and opw'ithadjustableslide shown in red lines.

Leners Patent No. 91,200, dated June 15, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT IN SLIDE-BLOCKS FOR MULEY-SAW MILLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, AsHBEL I. BAR-Low, of Kalamazoo,` in the county of Kalamazoo, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Slide- Block for Muley and Gang-,Saw Mills; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked there- 011.
The object of this invention is to obtain a slideblock for saw-mills that will be cheaper, lighter, and more durable than what has'l heretofore been used for such purpose; and
. 'It consists in making the slide-block of raw hide, or nntanuedfskins of animals.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use eration. Y
Figure l is a perspective view of theslide-block,`
-Figure 2 is a section of'vthe same, showing the construction of the block, and ythe connection of the block with the noddle-pin and rock-shaft of saw-bar.
Many attempts have been .made to substitute other material for steel, other metals, or their compounds,
in their use as slide-blocks in saw-mills, such as wood,
tempts have failed until my invention was successfully brought into use; and the advantages are, that it is lighter than metal,.less liable .to break in use, and will wear as 1ong,with less attention 1h keeping it lubricated, which, in the aggregate, makes it a cheaper and better slide-block than metal, wood, or other tnaterial, and it can be used wherever metal or other material can, whether in muley-blocks and single saw, or in gangs, or, if a reciprocating sash-frame is used, the wearing-surfaces may -be faced with raw hide on both the sash-frame and fender-posts, or their substitutes.
A, in the drawings, is the slide-block, made from several thicknesses of hide, as shown at a, figs. l and 2.
These layers a of the raw hide are placed upon each other .until the pile is suiicieut to make the block, when immense pressure is brought to bear upon the l same, and press the layers of raw hide together, so
that they will rmly adhere to each other, when holes are then bored through the block, and rivets or screwbolts b are inserted, and are riveted or screwed down, to hold the layers of raw hide to the poi-ut at which they have been compressed.
A hole, O, is then centrally made through the block, in which meddle-pin D of the rock-shaft is to be placed, as seen in red lines in figs. 1 and 2.
B is a raw-hide washer, that is interposed between the adjusting-nuts or pin D and the block; which will receive the wear of the nut, instead of the block itself, as such washer can be replaced at small cost and little expense whenever worn so as to be unfit to longer resist the vside-strain upon tbe block.
When the block is so constructed, and pin D is inserted in the central hole O, the block is placed between th e adjustable slides E, as seen in red lines in figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
These blocks may be of any desired shape that will workv between slides E, and they are hung upon a round noddle-pin, so as to readily permit them to change their position and direction, and accommodate guide-Ways that have not a continuous straight direction their entire length, su'ch as have been heretofore patented to myself, and having an angle in their direction, or, if used in connection with circular guideways, the sides of the block must also conform to the curvature of the` guide-ways, or they may be round, their diameter being equal to space between the guides.
I am aware that raw bide has been used, in light machinery, for bearings of journals, and for making of friction-rollers. Such use is not my invention, and I do not claim it, nor do I claim for any of the devices herein described, and shown in red lines; but having thus described my invention,
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent, isA
The slide-block, for saw-mills, above described, when made of raw hide, in. the manner and for the purposes substantially as described.
ASHBEL P. BARLOW.
