BANK CHECK AND DRAFT SYSTEM.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application filed May 14, 1906, Serial No. 316,832. Renewed August 20, 1908. Serial No. 449,535.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAND E. BUCK- MASTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank Check and Draft Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of books in which bank-checks and a check-record are removably retained ina single binder; and it has for its object to structurally im rove such books by the provision of materia ly advantageous means for efiecting detachable connection of both the bank checks and the check-record to the binder.
Other advantageous features of 'my invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the acoompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of my novel book as the same appears when open and ready for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section taken in the plane indicated bythe line 22 of Fig. 1, and illustrating the manner in which a pad of bank-checks is connected to the righthand cover of the binder. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken in the plane of the line 33, 1,
and showing the mode of connecting a pad of check-record sheets to the right-hand cover of the binder, and: Fi .4 is a section taken in the lane indicate by the line 44 of Fig. 1, lboking towardthe right.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:
A is the binder of my novel book. B is the ad of bank-checks, and C, the pad of chec -recordsheets.
As shown in Fig. 1, the binder A comrises a left-hand cover a, a right-hand cover 5, and a flexible back 0 interposed between and connecting the adjacent ends of the said covers. Fixed to and rising from the inner side of the right-hand cover I), at points adjacent to the back 0, are threaded posts d d and e e which are equipped with thumb nuts 1 and are designed to serve a purpose presently set forth in detail.-
The pad B is made up of a plurality of su erposed blank checks g, a strip h, of suitable textile material, to which the upper edges of the checks are glued and which is provided with the portion 11 extending beyond the lowermost check g, and a stifi base 1, of pasteboard or other suitable materia disposed below the lowermost check and connected to the portion 71 of the strip h, preferably in the manner shown e., by gluing itsunderside to the said portion 2' which is lapped over its upper edge, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The base extends inwardly beyond the inner ends of the superposed checks 9 about the proportional distance illustrated, and is provided in its extended portion 9' with apertures 70 designed to receive the fixed posts (1 on the right-hand cover I) of the binder A. When the extended portion j of the pad base 3' is placed in engagement with the posts (1 as stated, and the thumb nuts f complementary to said posts are screwed down ti ht against the base as shown in Fig. 2, it wiTl be apparent that the pad will be strongly connected to the binder cover I). It will also be apparent that the said connection does not entail the rovision of apertures in the checks 9 which is an important advantage for reasons hereinafter fully set forth.
The pad C is madeup of a plurality of superposed sheets m which are preferably though not necessarily unched, as indicated by n, so that they may e placed, subsequent to their removal from the pad, in a loose leaf binder or the like, a base 10 of paste board or other suitable material disposed below the superposed sheets and extended beyond the inner ends thereof and provided in its extended portion 10 with apertures r, and a strip of textile material s glued to the upper ends of the sheets m and having a portion t lapped over the upper edge of the ase p and glued or otherwlse fastened to the underside thereof. The extended portion (p of the base p is designed to be engage with the posts e of the ri ht-hand cover I) of the binder A, and be hel on said posts by the nuts f in the manner illustrated, so as to eflect connection between the pad and the binder without the provision of post-receiving apertures in any element of the pad other than the base 10.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that my im rovements obviate the necessity of punc ing the checks, and hence render it feasible to employ checks having no stubs. Such checks may be a proximately eight and three-ei hths inches ong by three and three eight s inches wide, and are adapted to be out with no waste whatever which is an important desideratum when the comparatively expensive bankers safety paper is employed in the production of the checks. In other Words my novel checks of the approximate size stated cut sixteen out of the standard size sheets of paper which are seventeen by twenty-eight inches. Again, my novel checks of the approximate size stated are susceptible of being lithographed to advantage as will be fully appredated from the following:
In printing by lithography reproductions are' made from the engraving as many times as is practicable according to the size of the order to be run, and it is expedient that one transfer keep a press runningthis in order to produce Work at competitive prices. With my checks of the size specified, the work can betransferred four on a quarter sheet (x 14 inches) for very small runs, eight on a half sheet (14 x 17 inches) for moderate size runs, and sixteen on a full sheet (17 x 28 inches) for long runs.
I prefer the construction herein shown and described but desire to make it clear that such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fully fall within the scope of my claimed invention without involving departure from the same.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a book of the kind described, the combination of a binder having posts, a pad comprising a plurality of superposed pieces of paper, and a stiff base, of pasteboard or other suitable material, disposed below and connected to the superposed pieces, and extending beyond the same at one end and having apertures in its extended portion receiving the posts of the binder, and retaining means arranged on the posts above the extended portion of the pad base.
2. In a book of the kind described, the
combination with a binder comprising covers I and a flexible back interposed between and connecting the covers, and having threaded posts fixed to one of the covers and nuts adjustable on said posts; of a pad comprising a plurality of superposed pieces of paper, and a stiff base, of pasteboard or other suitable material, disposed below and connected. to the superposed pieces and extending beyond the same at one end and having apertures in its extended portion receiving posed checks and a stiil base disposed below I and connected to the checks and extended beyond the same at the left-hand end and having apertures in its extended portion receiving one pair of posts, and a second pad arranged on the right-hand cover and comprising superposed record sheets and a still base disposed below and connected to the record sheets and extended beyond the same at the left-hand end and having apertures in its extended portion receiving the other pair of posts.
In testimony whereof I a'liix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
