UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES STANDARD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-FIFTHS TO ANDREW J. BRADAU AND CLEMENT J. KARRER, OF DETROIT, INIIOHIGAN.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 22, 1908.
To all whom it 'may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES STANDARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of nonrellable bottles in which the neck of the bottle is provided with an automatic valve and the invention consists in the improved construction of said valve and also in the novel construction and combination therewith of a cap all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an aXial section through the neck of the bottle. Fig. 2 is a like section inverted. -Fig. 3 is a detached perspective of the valve and Fig. 4 is a detached perspective of the cap.
A represents the neck of the bottle.
B is an inverted cup shaped gravity valve provided with a central hollow stem a having apertures at or near its base.
The neck of the bottle is formed with a central passage C of suitable size to freely admit and guide the stem of the valve and with the enlarged chamber D to accommodate the head thereof, a deep annular groove l being formed at the bottom of the chamber to receive the depending flange e of the valve.
E is a cap closing the neck of the bottle, it is secured therein permanently as by means of pins f, cement or in any other suitable manner, there may also be a shoulder g formed on the bottle and a gasket 7L may be interposed to make a tight joint. This cap is formed with a central pour-out z' and over this is placed a transversely extending guard j which forms the lateral eXits 7c to the pour out. The guard is preferably formed in one piece with the cap and prevents the entrance Vof any instrument for tampering with the valve.
On its underside the cap is provided with one or more projections Z adapted when the bottle is inverted to keep the valve out of contact with the cap as shown in Fig. 2. When thus inverted the valve is unseated by gravity and the liquid in the bottle can pass out through the holes Z) into the groove d and thence around the flange e of the valve to the pour out i and exits le.
The relative dimensions of the groove d and of the depending ange e of the valve are such that the flange e is not wholly withdrawn from the groove in the open position of the valve, the walls of the two however are out of contact with each other and the liquid therefore can flow between as shown by the arrows. In this way a very tortuous passage is formed which provides additional security against tampering.
All the parts are preferably formed of glass or other vitreous material and suitable provision is made for permanently securing the cap in position upon the bottle.
What I claim as my invention is In a non-rellable bottle, the combination with the neck of the bottle, of an inverted cup-shaped valve seated therein and provided with a downwardly projecting hollow valve stem guiding the valve in the neck of the bottle, an annular groove being formed therein to receive the depending flange of the valve and form annular spaces between the inner walls and the outer walls of the same and the stem being provided with lateral openings adapted to mediately connect the space below the valve with the space above when the valve is unseated, and an apertured cap permanently secured upon the neck and adapted to limit the movement of the valve said movement being less than the depth of the groove.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES STANDARD.
