To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH M. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Habra, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented a new and useful Illuminating Device and Adjustable Supporting Means Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

An object of this invention is to provide an illuminating device having adjustable supporting means therefor, said means being adapted to rest on top of an article of furniture, more particularly a piano or like musical instrument, and to support the illuminator at various heights and in diifen ent lateral positions for the purpose of throwing a satisfactory light upon the music sheet.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for supporting a piano light in the proper position for throwing light on the music whether said supporting means is placed on an upright piano of the taller sort or on a low fiat-topped piano.

By furnishing supporting means for the fuel supply tank at one side thereof, and slightly offsetting said means from the portable base, and extending the fuel-supply and lamp-supporting pipe from the other side of said reservoir, a construction is provided which makes it possible to adjust the lamp to positions below the level of the base, and at the same time maintain the lamp and tank on the same level to cause an even flow of oil to the lamp.

Another object is to provide, in combination with the supporting means, means for supplying an even flow of oil to the bowl of the lamp when an oil lamp is used for the illum inator.

A still further object is to provide a device of the character stated composed of comparatively light parts so connected together as to be readily separated and packed in convenient form for sending through the mails.

Other objects and advantages may hereinafter appear.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention embodied in a lamp and supporting means therefor resting upon an upright piano in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the parts of the invention slightly separated from each other, but arranged in approximately the position they occupy when assembled for use.

The invention consists in the various parts, in the combinations and constructions set forth in the general description, and particularly defined in the claims.

It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the use of the particular kind of illuminator illustrated.

The invention in the embodiment thereof illustrated in the drawings, comprises the base 1 provided with a holder 2 for adjustably supporting the other parts of the device. The supporting means proper in the preferred form of the invention, comprise a vertical rod 3 having a yoke 11 attached to one end thereof, said yoke having horizontal arms 12.

The illuminating device may comprise the tank 1, fuel supply-pipe 5 and the lamp 6 supplied with fuel from the tank through said pipe, or other illuminating means ma be provided for being mounted detachably upon the arms 12 of the yoke.

The fuel supply may consist of a tank 4:, and may be connected by fuel feeding arm 5 with the illuminator 6.

In the present embodiment of the invention, a weighted base 1 is provided with a short extension 7 which carries an upright arm 8 having an open-ended bore 9 extending therethrough so that stem 3 may be inserted into the bore from either end thereof, and adjustabl Y supported therein by setscrew 10 whic forms part of the holding means. Rod 3 is reversibly mounted in the socket of arm 8 and is provided at its outer end with attaching means consisting of a yoke 11 having arms 12, tank 4- being removably mounted on said arms by means of keeper or loop 13 at each end thereof.

15 is a regulating wick, preferably a round wick which practically fills the inside of tube 5 and extends from end to end thereof to prevent an oversupply of the oil from rushing into the bowl 16 of the lamp if the latter is accidentally tipped below the level of tank 4.

20 is a broad reflector and shade adapted to shade the eyes of the musicians and to throw the light upon the sheet of music 21 supported by piano 22. Reflector 20 may be removably mounted in a socket 23, so that the same may be readily removed for cleaning or when the apparatus is to be packed for shipment.

A Strengthening web 2 may be soldered to tank 4 and pipe 5 to fasten said parts more securely together.

25 designates rivet-shaped pieces of rubber or like material cemented into holes or otherwise fastened to base 1 to prevent said base from marring furniture.

Base 1 is preferably made of metal and is sufficiently heavy to at all times more than counterbalance the parts supported thereby.

The elongated tank at, when mounted on the'reversible support in either position of said support extends in such a direction that the length of the tank is substantially parallel with the side of the base next thereto. This construction lessens liability of the base being overbalanced by the tank, because the weight of the tank is placed nearly in vertical alinement with said base In an illuminating apparatus constructed according to the principles of this invention a light maybe adjustably supported either above or below the level of the support upon which the apparatus as a whole rests and said light may also be swungv to difierent points of lateral adjustment. 7

' I am aware that prior to my newly invented means for supporting an illuminator, lighting means have been provided with supports mounted on weighted bases and that there have also been provided various means for supporting and vertically adjusting a lamp on a fixed support; but so far as I am aware, no such portable base has hitherto been combined with a longitudinally adjustable vertical lamp-carrying rod mounted on said base or on an extension close to the weighted portion thereof. In order to make a portable base available as a means for supporting illuminating apparatus, it is necessary that the weight of said apparatus be thrown close to the center of gravity of said base. The fuel supply tank 4t weighs far more than the lamp 6, and said tank is therefore, as illustrated in the drawings, thrown very close to vertical alinement with the edge of base 1. Otherwise, it would be impossible to extend the lamp 6 a sufficient distance from the top of the piano to throw the light squarely against the surface of the music sheet 21 without overbalancing the base.

It is to be understood that although the drawings illustrate what is at present deemed the most desirable embodiment of the invention, various alterations within the skill of the workman may be made in the construction illustrated and described without departing from the scope of the invention.

In combination, holding means, means for mounting said holding means on an article of furniture, a support mounted on said holding means and vertically adjustablewith relation thereto, said support including a 'yoke having horizontally extending arms, a fuel supply tank having a keeper at each end thereof adapted to: engage an arm of said yoke to removably support said tank, a horizontal conduit extending from said tank, and an illuminator supported by and supplied with fuel through said conduit.

In combination, a portable base consisting of a counterbalancing weight having an extension projecting horizontally therefrom, a vertical arm carried by said extension, said arm having an open-ended boreextending therethrough, a rod adapted to-slidably and revolubly engage said bore, a set-screw car'- ried by said arm to. maintain said rod. infixed; position therein, a horizontal yoke mounted on one end of said rod, a pair of arms projecting laterally from; said yoke,an elongated tank, a keeper carried by said tank at each end thereof, said keepers adapted to removably engage said arms. of the yoke, a conduit projecting from said tank, and an illuminator carried by and supplied with fuel through said conduit.

7 In combination, a base consisting of a counterbalancing weight, a vertical arm extending upwardly from said base at one edge thereof, said arm having an open-ended bore extending longitudinally therethrough, a rod sliclably engaging said bore, means to adjustably maintain said rod in said bore, a

fuel tank, means supporting said tank at the upper end of said rod, said rod extending approximately in vertical alinement with one side of said tank, a fuel supply pipe projecting from the side of said tank opposite said rod, and an illuminator carried by the outer end of said pipe and supplied with fuel therethrough.

8. In combination, a counterbalancing weight comprising a base adapted to sit on an article of furniture, holding means carried by said base and offset from one edge thereof, a fuel supply tank mounted on sa1d holding means, a supply pipe projecting from the side of said tank farthest from the center of gravity of said base, and an illuminator supported by the outer end of said pipe and supplied with fuel therethrough.

In combination, a portable base, a fuelsupply tank, a lamp spaced horizontally away from said tank, a fuel-supply pipe eX- tending from one side of said tank to said lamp, and means supported by said base and adjustable to points below the level thereof for supporting said tank, said means being located in operative position at the side of said tank opposite said lamp.

10. In combination, a portable weighted base, a fuel tank, an illuminat-or, a laterally extending pipe to supply said illuminator with fuel from said tank, and means offset slightly beyond vertical alinement with one side of said base for supporting said tank, said means being adapted for adjustment to bring the lamp to the side of the tank opposite said base.
