Description

O. F. SPENCER. Lamp.
No., 204,457. Patented June 4,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. SPENCER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,457, dated June 4, 1878 application filed May 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPENCER, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
My invention consists of a portable parlor. stand mounted on legs, and having a fountaintop for containing oil, with pipes or tubes with suitable fixtures for the attachment of lamps extending therefrom, all as hereinafter described.
A represents the stand, which is mounted on legs B B, and forms an ordinary parlor stand or table. C is the fountain-top, made hollow, to contain the oil for supplying the lamps. This top may be made of any desired size and shape of suitable material, such as plated metal; or a slab of marble may be laid over its top; or it may be arranged in any other desired manner. D D are pipes or tubes leadin g from the bottom of the fountain, extending outward, and having at the outer end fixtures a a for the attachment of the lamps. One or more of these tubes may be used, and they may open either from the side of the fountain or the bottom, in the latter case being curved downward and then upward vertically, to present an ornamental appearance. The fountain is filled by removing one of the lamps and pouring the oil into the fixture or cap a, and,
in burning, the oil acts upon the well-known principle of the German student'lamp. The fountain-top is attached to a screw, b, which screws up and down in the standard a, for adjusting the top to any desired height.
This invention presents all the advantages of an ordinary parlor-stand, and the additional advantages of a lamp attachment, the two forming one device. The stand is adapted to receive and hold the ordinary articles placed upon a parlor-stand, serves as a work-stand or a card-stand, and has the advantage of a fixed light attached thereto in convenient position for illuminating the stand without being an impediment to the same. The fountain-top holds a sufficient quantity of oil to last a long time without replenishing. The removal of the lamps a distance from the top prevents any gathering of oil thereon. The top may be turned to bring the lamps in convenient position for use, and the lamp comes directly over the work.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new is- The parlor-stand A, provided with a fount ain-top, G, having one or more pipes, D D, leading therefrom, with fixtures a. a. for the attachment of lamps, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. F. SPENCER.
