IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,537, dated December 28, 1875; application led December 2l, 1875.

To all whom' it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPENCER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of lamps which are termed students lamps;77 and the present invention consists, essentially, of a vertical supportingrod, on which is arranged an elongated horizontal reservoir or chamber for holding the burning uid, the said reservoir being provided at each end with a burner of any preferred construction adapted to receive a chimney, and a frame for supporting a shade, said rod or support passing through the central portion of the horizontal oil chamber or reservoir, and through a tube or sleeve having at one end a head, and at the other end a screwthread, to which is fitted a nut for holding the sleeve in place. The sleeve, being arranged on the vertical rod and with the reservoir, is constructed to revolve or rotate on the rod, the lower end of the sleeve or tube resting upon a collar arranged on the rod, and

through which passes a thumb-nut for binding the collar on the rod, by which means the oil-reservoir and its burners can be adjusted to .any desiredposition and held by thc collar, allas will be fully hereinafter 'described.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a perspective view of my improvedlamp; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view of the'reservoir for containing the burning-Huid, showing a portion of the supporting-rod.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, the letter A represents a foot or base, from which rises a vertical standard or rod, B, which is preferably of a round form, and is provided at its extreme end with a suitable handle, C, by which it can be car.- ried. D represents an elongated reservoir or chamber for holding the burning-fluid', and it is by preference of a circular shape in crosssection, and is arranged in a 4horizontal position on the vertical supporting-rod, so that the latter passes directly through its center. In the present example I have shown a tube or sleeve, E, passing through the oil-reservoir, which sleeve is provided at one end with a head, a, which bears on the upper side of the reservoir, and the other end, which projects through the opposite side, is provided with a screw-thread, to which is fitted a screw-nut, b, for confining the sleeve in place. The passage through the sleeve is of the same shape or contour as thesupportingrod, so that the reservoir and its sleeve can be freely revolved or rotated. At or near each end of the reservoir D is. constructed an I The lower end of the tube or sleeve which carries the oil-reservoir rests upon a collar, I, arranged on the supporting-rod, and is adjustable thereon by means of a thumb-nut, K, which passes through the collar and binds .against the rod A, whereby the oil-reservoir,

with its burners, can be adjusted and supported at any desired position on the rod by means of said collar.

l A lamp constructed as hereinbefore described is very simple. The advantage of two burners are secured without increasing the size of the lamp, and the reflection of light is superior to any lamp of the character heretofore constructed; and, moreover, by

constructing and arranging the oil-reservoir so as to render it capable of being revolved or rotated on its supporting-rod it is very convenient and desirable in use.

I have shown the oil-reservoir as being provided only at each end with'a burner; but it is evident that'other burners can be added to the same Where the oil-reservoir is extended laterally opposite the supporting-rod, either on one or both sides, and provided with al burner.
