IMPROVEMENT IN ROTATING READlNG-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,950, dated November 12, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS GARTWRIGHT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotating Beading-Table, of which the following is a specification:

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved rotating reading-table or book-support for attachment to circular and octagonal tables that are supported upon a pedestal, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use; and it consists in the rotating arm, adj ustablerod, and gas-pipe provided with plugs or stop-cocks at its ends, stationary or jointed gas-burners, and an adjustable bookrest, in combination with each other and with the pedestal of a table, as hereinafter more fully described.

A represents the top, and B the pedestal of a round table. The upper end of the pedestal B is rabbeted to form a cylindrical neck, and square shoulder to receive the inner end of the arm 0, which has a hole formed through it to fit upon the said neck. The arm 0 is made so long that its outer end may project beyond the edge of the table-top A, and in it is formed a socket to receive a rod, D, which is secured in position when adjusted by means of a set-screw, as shown in Fig. 1. To the upper end of the rod D is attached a piece, E, of

gaspipe of any convenient length. One or both ends of the pipe E should he provided with plugs or stop-cocks, and. so formed as to receive the end of a flexible gas-tube, the other end of which may be connected with a chandelier or wall gas-burner. With the gas-pipe E, near each end, is connected a gasburner, F, which may be stationary or jointed. To the gas-pipe E, between the burners F, is secured a bookrest, G, which is made with a ledge near its lower edge to support the lower end of the book, which ledge may be provided with a flange or fingers to keep the book open. The book-rest G is secured in place upon the gas-pipe E by a set-screw, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it may be adjusted in position or inclination as may be required.

By this construction the book-rest or table may be turned over any desired part of the table or-to project at any desired side of the table, and may be adjusted at any desired,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The rotating arm (J, adjustable rod D, and

gas-pipe E provided with plugs or stop-cocks at its ends, with stationary or jointed burners F, and an adjustable hook-rest, G, in combi nation with each other and with the pedestal of a table, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
