Abstract
16,129. Keen, A. July 20. Extinguishing oil lamps. - In an automatic extinguishing-arrangement for use in oil lamps with a central air supply, a cap d is mounted on the top of a rod a which passes through guideplates b in the draught tube p. A spring e is threaded on the rod between a collar f, at the bottom end, and the lower guide-plate. Arranged below is a second rod h, which is fulcrumed at j<1> to a gimbal ring k by means of a bridge-piece j. The ring is fulerumed to the side members c of the tube. To keep the lower rod vertical and thereby support the upper rod, a weight m is fixed below the ring. If the lamp lie tilted, or fall over, the weight moves the rod h from under the rod a, and the spring will then draw the cap on to the wick g. On raising a chimney-holding ring s in order to re-ligbt the lamp, the upper rod a is raised and again supported by the lower rod h. The holder is secured in position by means of webs t which are formed with notches u to engage parts of a flange v at the top of the lamp. The extinguisher may also be operated by means of a knob r which is connected to a leaf spring q surrounding the weight. In applying the device to a hand-lamp, the lower rod is fixed to a tray or holder at the base, and the reservoir is pivoted to a gimbal ring fulcrumed in supports fixed to the tray. If the cap be removed, and screws o unfastened, the parts of the device may be withdrawn through a hole in the base of the lamp.
