Be it known that we, Timonon KUNDTZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, and JOSEPH Rai-ion, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Cabinets; and wc do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in sewing-machine cabinets.
This invention pertains more especially to a sewing-machine cabinet having a table-top provided with a horizontally arranged quadrangular frame having an opening extending vertically through the frame for accommodating the operation of a pivotally supported platform employed in carrying the sewing-1nachinehead from above the tabletop downwardly through the said opening and vice versa, which opening, being enough larger in dimensions forwardly and rearwardly of the cabinet to accommodate the passage through the opening of the said head, is only partially closed or occupied by the said platform in the upwardly swung and horizontal position of the platform which therefore is provided with a leaf einployed to substantially complete the closure of the opening in the horizontal and opening-closing position of the platform.
The primary object of this invention is to avoid the necessity of providing the stationary framework of the cabinet at one or both sides of the sweep of the platform with an inclined guide or guides for guiding the aforesaid leaf, and to avoid the provision of a rest on the said stationary framework for the said leaf in the opening closing position of the platform and attached leaf, and hence to materially reduce the cost and improve the appearance of the cabinet and attain and insure an easy movement of the platform and attached leaf.
With this object in View, and to the end of realizing any other advantages hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations of parts, hereinafter described,
pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a sewing-machine cabinet embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a front view in vertical section on line 2-2, F ig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. lis a vertical section corresponding with Fig. 3, except that in Fig. l the platform is shown intermediate of its range of movement at a point where during the actuation of the platform from its depending position into its opening-closing position the attached pivotal leaf begins to be guided into its opening-closing position. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are drawn on a larger scale than Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of adjacent portions of the platform and at` tached leaf in their horizontal position. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line 6-6, Fig'. 5, looking downwardly. Fig. 7 is a side view of the adjacent portions of the platform and attached leaf and illustrates the position in which the leaf is held relative to the platform by a suitably applied spring in the depending position of the platform. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are drawn on a larger scale than Figs. 2, 3 and fl.
The stationary portion of my improve-d cabinet comprises two standards or side frames A which arc arranged vertically and spaced laterally. The cabinet comprises a horizontally arranged table-top B which rests upon and is suitably secured to the side frames A. The table-top B is provided centrally with an opening Z) extending vertically therethrough. The opening Z) is rectangular and arranged longitudinally of the table-top. A rectangular frame D rests upon the table-top A externally of and extends around the opening and the said frame is glued or otherwise attached to the table-top. The frame D has the opening Z therein extending vertically through the frame, which opening is arranged in registry with the opening b in the table-top.
F indicates the fly-wheel of a sewing-ma? chine. The said iy-wheel is shown in dotted lines Fig. l and arranged in the usual manner below the right-hand ends of the registering openings b and d and supported from the right-hand side frame A in any approved manner.
G represents a pivotallysupported load-A carrying platform which is arranged to swing in a vertical plane and is within the opening Z of the frame D of the table-top, as shown in Figs. l and 2 and in solid lines Fig. 3, or depends below the table-top, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 8, according as the said leaf is in the one or the other of its extreme positions. The openings and d are large enough in dimensions to accommodate a reception thereby of the platform G and a leaf R which is pivotally supported from the platform. Preferably the platform Gr is pivoted at its side edges in suitable proximity to the forward wall of the opening d, as at g, to the side walls of the said opening horizontally and longitudinally of the cabinet to render the platform capable of swinging downwardly from Within the said opening or upwardly into the opening. The leaf R is pivotally secured at the ends by means of pivotal screws or members r to the platform Gr at the free end of the leaf G and arranged to swing upwardly independently of the platform during the lowering of theplatform into its depending position. rlheaxes of the leaf R and platform Gr are parallel. The platform G is designed to bearpthe sewing-machine head (not shown) which head is usually of such dimensions that it will not swing through an opening which is not larger than the platform, and the platform if it were made large enough to occupy anopening of the size necessary to accommodate the passage of the sewingmachine head therethrough would in swinging from its horizontal and opening-closing position into its downwardly swung or depending position strike the fly-wheel of the sewing-machine. Consequently the openings Z) and CZ are made large enough to accommodate a swinging of the sewing-machine head through the opening l; into or from within the opening Z and the platform is adapted to only partially close the opening (l and the leaf R is employed to substantially complete the closure of the opening d in the openingclosing position of the platform.
Means for actuating the platform G are provided and comprise a cover-forming leaf H which is hinged, as at 7L, to the frame D at the left-hand end of the frame. The leaf H is arranged with its axis at a right angle to the axis of the platform Gr and is employed in lifting the latter from its downwardly swung or depending position into its horizontal or opening-closing position. The
cover-forming leaf H is operatively connected with the platform G by a chain I. The -chain I is attached at one end to the coverforming leaf a suitable distance from the hinged end 'of the leaf and at the rear side edge of the leaf and is suitably connected at its other end to the free end of an arm G2 whichprojects rearwardly from and is rigidly secured to the platform G centrally between the ends of the platform rlhe chain I leads over a guide-roller K which is'suitably supported from the table-top B and arranged within a slot B formed in the said top rearwardly of the opening b and large enough in dimensions to freely accommodate the location and operation of the said sheave and engaging strap. rllhe leaf H covers the opening Z in the frame D, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 3, or projects laterally of thc left-hand end of the table-top B, shown i in Figs. l and 2, according as the platform G is in its depending position or in its upwardly swung and opening-,closing position.
The frame D is provided at the top and at each side of the opening Z with a laterally and inwardly projecting portion or member D which overhangs the adjacent end of the opening I) in the table-top B and extends from the rear wall to the forward wall of the opening (Z.
The platform G is provided at each side edge thereof and below the top surface of the platform with a laterallyv and outwardly projecting portion or member G which extends transversely of the platform from the rear to the forward longitudinal edge of the platform and is arranged to overlap and Vabut against the under side of the projecting member or portion D of the frame D in the opening-closing position of the platforn'i. Obviously therefore the projecting portion D of the frame D and the projecting portion G of the platform Gr constitute a stop for limiting the upward movement of the platform in actuating the latter into the opening .Il in the frame and preventing movement of the platform above the said opening.
The leaf R is provided at each side edge thereof and below the top surface of the leaf with a laterally and outwardly projecting portion R which extends transversely of the leaf from the rear to the forward longitudinal edge of the leaf and is arranged to overlap and abut against the under side. of the adjacent projecting member or portion D of the frame D in the horizontal and opening-closing position of the leaf. Obviously therefore the projecting portion D of the frame D and the projecting portion R of the leaf R form a stop for preventing upward tilting of the said leaf in its horizontal and opening-closing position.
Preferably two plates R2 are fixed to the leaf R at opposite side edges respectively of the leaf and pivoted to the platform G, as at r, horizontally and parallelly with the axis of the platform to render the leaf tiltable upwardly independently of the platform during the movement of the platform into 'its depending position. Preferably the plates R2 are sunk into the leaf and platform flush with the side edges of the platform and leaf,
-and the platform is recessed or cut away at its side edges, as at G3, to the extent required to accommodate the location and operation of the said plates.
rhe leaf R is provided with an arm 'r2 which is'preferably formed on one of the plates R2. The arm r2 projects longitudinally of the adjacent side edge of the platform toward the axis of the platform in the opening-closing position of the platform, and a spiral spring s arranged below the axis of the leaf and longitudinally of the inner side of the said arm is attached at `one end to the platform adjacent the inner end of the arm and at its other end to the arm at the outer end of the arm. The spring s is under tension in the opening-closing position of the platform and attached leaf.
The platform G is provided with a pin y) in suitable proximity to the axis of the leaf R and arranged to be engaged by the upper longitudinal edge of one of the plates R2 upon the tilting of the leaf upwardly and to a limited extent independently of the platform, and the said pin therefore forms a stop -whieh limits the tilting of the leaf upwardly independently of the platform. During the movement of the platform from its depending into its opening-closing position the laterally projecting portions or members R of the leaf R come into engagement at their upper sides with the lower sides of the projecting portions or members D of the frame D, as shown in Fig. et, whereupon the mutual engagement of the said projecting members or portions of the leaf and frame results in the swinging of the leaf into line horizontally with the platform, and we would here remark that the arrangement of the parts is such that when the leaf R', during the actuation of the platform into its opening-closing position, has come into the position shown in Fig. 4 the point of contact between each member or portion R of the said leaf and the engaging member or portion D of the frame D is enough farther from the axis of the platform than the axis of the leaf to freely accommodate the guiding of the leaf by the members or portions D of the said frame into its opening-closing position. The arm 'r2v of the leaf R engages the under side of the platform in the opening-closing position of the leaf and prevents the leaf from tilting downwardly independently of the platform in the opening-closing position of the platform and attached leaf.
As alreadyl indicated, the projecting portions or members G of the platform G abut against the under side of the projecting portions or members D of the frame D in the opening-closing position of the platform and attached leaf, and obviously the engagement of the projecting portions G of the platattached leaf with the under side of the projectingportions D of the frame `D and the engagement of the arm r2 of the leaf with the under side of the platform in the opening-closing position of the platform and attached leaf constitute means whereby the platform and attached leaf are not only alined by their actuation into their openingclosing position but maintained in line horizontally in their opening-closing position.
It will be observed that through the medium of the mutually engageable members or portions of the leaf and frame the leaf is guided into its opening-closing position with facility during the actuation of the platform into its opening-closing position; that the leaf, when in position to be guided into its opening-closing position, as shown in Fig. et, projects upwardly from the platform and rearwardly relative to the cabi- 1 net, and that the adjacent longitudinal edges of the platform and attached leaf are curved coneentrically of the axis of the leaf.
By the construction hercinbefore described the plates R2 not only participate in the formation of the hinge-connection between the leaf R and the platform G, but the arm 'r2 of one of the said plates constitutes an inexpensive stop for limiting the movement of the said leaf in the actuation of the said leaf into line with the said platform and also forms a suitable member for the attachment of the spiral spring s which, as already indicated, acts to retain the said leaf in its upwardly tilted position relative to the platform, and the arrangement of the said spring at the inner side of the said arm is not unimportant because the spring in this location is out of the way and not interfered with in actuating the platform from the one to the other of its extreme positions. The plate R2 having the arm r2 is preferably enlarged downwardly under the pivotal screw r which pivots the said plate to the platform and the arm r2 is formed on the said downward enlargement of the said plate, as shown very clearly in Figs. 5 and 7.
That we claim is l. In a sewing-machine cabinet, a stationary frame which has an opening extending vertically through the frame; a suitably actuated pivotally supported load carrying platform partially closing or depending below the aforesaid opening according as the platform is in the one or the other of its extreme positions; a leaf extending longitudinally of the platform and arranged to substantially complete the closure of the aforesaid opening in the opening-closing position of the platform; two plates fixed to the leaf at opposite side edges respectively of the leaf and pivoted to the platform to render the leaf tiltable upwardly to a limited extent and independently of the platform durform and the projecting portions R of the ing the movement of the platform into its depending position, and one of the said ,plates being provided with an arm which projects longitudinally of the adjacent side edge of and under the platform toward the axis of the platform in the opening-closing position of the platform; a spiral spring arranged below the axis of the leaf and longitudinally of the inner side of the said arm and Yattached at one end to the platform adjacent the inner end of the arm and at its other end to the arm at the outer end of the latter, said spring being under tension in the opening-closing position of the platform and attached leaf, and means whereby the leaf is guided 'into its opening-closing position during the actuation of the platform into its opening-closing position.
2. In a sewing-machine cabinet, a stationary frame which has an opening extending vertically through the frame; a suitably actuated pivotally supported loadcarrying platform partially closing or depending below the aforesaid opening according as the platform is in the one or the other of its extreme positions; a leaf extending longitudinally of the platform and arranged to substantially complete the closure of the aforesaid opening in the opening-closing position of the platform; two plates fixed to the leaf at opposite side edges respectively of the leaf and pivoted to the platform to render the leaf tiltable upwardly to a limited extent and independently of the platform during the movement of the platform into its depending position, and one of the said plates being enlarged downwardly below its pivotal connection with the platform and having its said downward enlargement provided with an arm which projects longitudinally of the adjacent side edge of and under the platform toward the axis of the plat-form in the opening-closing position of the' platform; a spiral spring arranged longitudinally of thev said arm and attached at one end to the platform adjacent the inner end of the arm and at its other end to the arm a suitable distance from the said end of the arm, said spring being under tension in the opening-closing position of the platform and attached leaf, and means whereby the leaf is guided into its openingclosing position during the actuation of the platform into its opening-closing position.
