- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. OOLES, on NEW YORK, Ne
YQSEWING-MACHINE CABINET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 249,590, dated November 15, 1881, i i I Application filed March 31,1881. (No model.)
Be it known that I, DAVID H. GoLEs, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that kind of cases or stands for sewing and other machines which are'adapted to lower or raise the machine.
My invention consists in the combination, withtheinachine-framehavingvertical grooves or recesses, of vertically-sliding front and rear slats having their ends arranged in said grooves or recesses, and provided at their respective edges with lips for engaging each other, and a vertically-movable platform supported byilips onthe lower edge'of one pair of said slats, all as will be more fully hereinafter described in detail.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, in which Figure l is a side view, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof when closed. Fig. 3is a similar'view thereof when the same'is opened and ready for enlarged scale.
of the supporting-platform.
use. Fig. 4; is an inner view of the side of the case, showing therecesses or guideways in the same. Fig.5 shows the slats and supportingplat'form detached from each other and on an In thedrawings, the letter A designates a sewing-machine table or frame which is provided with lidsor covers B B, hinged to the same. The eentralpart of the case A is provided with a recess for the reception of a sewing-machine, G, and its driving mechanism consisting of a tread1e,D, imparting motion to the driving-wheel E. i
The sewing-machine G is mounted on a platform, G, which is provided ati'ts opposite edges with lips c c, resting on and supported by lips c 0, provided at the lower edges of the front and rear slats, H, the ends of which freely slide in the grooves or recesses a. The slats Hare provided at their upper edges with lips, to a, which rest upon lips a a provided on secondary front and rear slats, I, which have theirends arranged to freely slide vertically ,in grooves or recesses 12 b, provided in. the frame Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the machine. The upper edges of the slats in contact with the upper lips on the slats H when the latter are movedupward, thereby causing the slats I to move upward with the same. y
In order that the wheel E may be readilydrawn up and away from the treadle D,-.and also readily "lowered, the connecting-rod by which the motion of the treadleD is imparted to the wheel E is made in sections, which telescope one-within the other and are fastened in their proper positions by adjusting setscrews j j.
drawn up so as to raise the platform Grand to cause the sewing-machine to rise above the upper surface of the case.
In order to allow the wheel E to move up and down its axle is formed on a pendent arm or support, K, which is attached to and moves with the platform G and is arranged to move in suitable guides, K, on the frame of the machine.
When the sewing-machine is notin use it is lowered down into the case A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the lids B B are folded over, so as to cover the recess in, the case A, thus forming a table. I
When the sewing-machine is to be used the lids or covers B B are folded out (see Fig. 3) and the sewing-machine is raised up above the top of the case A, where it may be fastened by spring-catches, dowels, or other suitable device.
As shown in the drawings, the platform G, when raised, is held up by project-in g pins or dowels f, adapted to enter eyes or holes 9 in the case A. These pins f, Fig.6, are attached to arms or levers j, swinging about pivots 7c, and connected by an arm or rod, l. The pins or dowelsf are forced out to the positionshown, in the drawings by the action of a spring, a. When the platform G is to be lowered into the case A the dowels are drawn out of the eyes the resistance of the spring m, when the platform Gris free to sink downinto the case A- By the arrangement herein described I am enabled to make the case A in the form of an open stand, while at the same time the ma- I have inward-projecting lips a a ,for coming chine 0, when lowered'into the case A, will be When the sewing-machine is to be used it is or holes 9 by pulling the bar i-inward against inc losed by the slats H I, which extend across the opening or recess in tbe'ycase A, Fig. 2,
, have been inventedforlow'ering or depressing the sewing mechanism below the plane of the table-top and protecting the same from dust when in a lowered position and among such is that where the movable platform which supports the sewing mechanism is hinged to the lower edges of two side slats, which latter are. in turn hinged to two slats thatare pivoted to the under side of the table-top on OPDosite' sides of the opening therein provided for bringin g the movable platform carrying the sewing mechanism into the plane of 'theitable-top, all
- in such manner that the said platform can be dropped below the tabletop, and the sewing mechanism will be contained within a closed box-like receptacle, which conceals and protects the same from dust, 850., said box-like re- V ceptacle being composed ofrthe hinged side slats before stated and a stationary and a movable end wall or piece. Such construction of sewing-machine stand or cabinet, not being my invention, is hereby disclaimed.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the machine-frame having vertical grooves vor recesses a and b with vertically-sliding front and rear slats, H and I, having their ends arranged in said grooves or recesses, and provided at their respective edges with lips for engaging each other, and a vertically-movable platform, G, supported by lips on the lower edge of the slats H, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subsoribing witnesses. DAVID H. OOLES. [L. s.]
W. HAUFF, E. F. KAS'IENHUBER.
