To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RroHAnD R. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, county of Boone, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Cabinets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to that class of sewing machine cabinets provided with drop leaves or platforms for supporting the sewing machine head when in use and lowering the head out of the way when not in use, and the invention has for its primary object to provide an efficient, simple and inexpensive construction of sewin machine cabinet of this, character in WlllOl the platform when elevated shall be substantially as rigid as the solid portion of the table, a further object being to improve and simplify the construction whereby more room under the table for the knees of the operator may be provided.

With a view to the attainment of these ends and the accom lishment of certain other objects which wi l hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims. I

Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical, sectional view of one of the slotted plates or guides hereinafter described. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the platform. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the platform extension and its operating mechanism showing the same elevated. Fig. 5 is a, vertical, cross section of the cabinet showing the platform lowered. Fig. 6 is a similar view illustrating a modification hereinafter described, and Fig. 7 is a detail cross section on the line 7, 7 Fig. 6. r

1 represents the fixed or rigid part of the table or cabinet topand 2 is the lid which is hinged at 3 to the top 1 in the usual or any suitable way and adapted to fold over upon the top 1 and close the opening therein when the platform 4, which is hinged in said opening, is lowered as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The platform 4, as will be understood, is provided for supporting the sewing machine head, not necessary to illustrate, during the operation of the sewing machine, or to lower the head out of the way when the lid 2 is closed.

Owing to the extent to which the arm and connecting parts of the sewing machine head project above or from the platform 4, it is necessary or desirable to provide the table top 1 with an opening considerably wider than the platform 4 in orderto permit the arm to pass downwardly, and it is customary to close a portion of such 0 ening with a part commonly known as the p atform extension, which is ordinarily so constructed and arranged as to be ca able of being moved out of the way while t e head is being lowered. According to my invention this platform extension, which is shown at 5, is permanently hinged at 6 to the table top 1 at the side opposite that at which the platform 4 is hinged, and in the exemplification of the invention shown in Fig. '5, this platform extension is adapted to turn downwardly to permit the sewing machine arm to pass when the platform 4 is lowered from a. horizontal position, and it is adapted to rise into a horizontal position together with the latform 4 so as to fill the opening'in the tab e top and complete the continuityof the platform. In orderto accomplish this automatic action of the extension 5, it is connected at one side or end to an arm by means of a link 8 and which arm is pivoted at 9 to one side of the cabinet and so arranged that as the platform 4 rises lug or pin 10 on one end thereof engages under the arrn7 and pulls. it upwardly and inwardly into the posltgion shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, thereby lifting the extension 5 into ahorizontaliposition before or about the timethe platform 4 arrives at such position so that the flange or rabbet 1110mm platform 4 will engage under a similar flange 12 on the extension 5 and thereby. rigidly support the latter. To each end of the platform 4 is secured by means of a pivot 13 the upper end of, an arm 14 of triangular formation in the three corners ofv which are secured respectively the pivot 13, a stud or pin 15 and a cross bar 16, which latter connects the two arms 14 to getheras shown in Fig. 1. The two studs or pins 15 slide in grooves 17 formed in side plates 18 let into or secured against the sides of the cabinet, and the cross bar 16 is connected by a chain 19 or other suitable flexible connection with. the lid 2 in such a manner that when the lid is raised the chain will be pulled perpendicularly over the sheave 20 or other suitable support and the cross bar 16 will be raised, causing the studs 15 to slide upwardly in their grooves 17 and the platform 4 to be elevated by the pivots 13.

The upper ends of the grooves 18 are rounded toward the cross bar 16 in such form that when the platform is fully elevated and the pressure thereon produces a tendency to rotate the arm 14 about the center 16, the thrust or pressure of the pin 15 will be substantially perpendicular to the line of the grooves 17 and consequently the platform will be rigidly supported in its horizontal position.

By thus detaching the extension 5 from the platform it will be observed that the platform will require less room or s ace for its operation during its rising and fa ling movements and as a consequence the apron 21 may be carried much closer to the edge or line of movement of the platform than if said extension 5 were connected thereto.

In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the automatic mechanism for operating the extension is omitted and the extension 5 is hinged at its upper edge at 22 so as to be capable of turning upwardly into the position shown in dotted lines. When in use the extension 5 is supported at its ends by rabbet 23 resting upon a corresponding rabbet 24 on the table and the edge of the extension is provided with rabbet 25 which rests u on the rabbet 1 1 on the edge of platform 4. n the use of this modified form the platform 4 will first be lowered a slight distance until the fingers of the operator may be passed under the rabbet 25 so as to raise extension 5 until the arm of the sewing machine passes downwardly when it may be allowed to fall again into its horizontal position. When platform 4 rises the arm of the machine will engage extension 5 and lift it until it passes, allowing it to drop back into its horizontal position as platform 4 completes its upward movement.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a table top, a lid for the top, a hinged platform within the top, an arm also within the top and connected to the lid and platform for supporting the latter, and a curved guide on the top engaged by the arm at a point intermediate its points of connection with the lid and platform, said guide being adapted to direct the movement of the arm when the platform is raised or lowered.

2. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a table top )rovid'ed with an opening, a lid for closing the opening, a plat form hinged within the top, a triangular shaped arm also within the top, means at one corner of said arm connecting it with the lid, means at another corner of the arm connecting it with the platform, a. guide adjacent the arm and secured to the top, means at the third corner of the arm engaging said guide, and a stop on the guide for limiting the movement of the arm.

3. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a table top, a platform hinged in the to two arms pivoted to the platform, a cross ar connecting said arms together, means connected to the bar for raising the platform, guides within the top with which said arms engage at points in their length intermediate the said cross bar and the point of connection with the platform, and stops on the guides for limiting the movement of the arms.

4. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a table top provided with an opening, a platform movable with relation to the opening and being of a size somewhat smaller than the opening, means for raising and loweringthe platform, a platform extension hinged to the top, and of a size to close the opening between the edge of the platform and table top, an arm pivoted to the top, a connection between said arm and )latform extension, and a projection carried by the platform, said arm being located within the path of movement of the projection and adapted to be engaged thereby for rocking the arm to move the extension when the platform is raised.

5. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top, a platform hinged thereto along one edge to move up and down, a guide on the cabinet provided with an n )wardly extending groove curved toward and terminating short of the hinge of the platform, and an arm movably connected to the latform and having a part thereon movab e in the slot to guide the same and pivotally movable in the slot when stopped by the end thereof, and means connected to the arm for raising and rocking the same in the slot, whereby the platform is raised and lowered.

6. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a table top, having an opening therein, a cover for said opening, a platform hinged to the top and movable with relation to the opening, a slot within the top, and terminating short of the hinge of the platform an arm pivoted at one end to the platform, the other end entering and moving in the slot, a flexible member, and a guide for said member, one end of the member being connected to the cover and the other to the arm, whereby the arm will be moved in the slot and against one end thereof to raise and support the platform when the cover is removed.

7. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a table top provided with an opening, a lid for the 0 ening, a platform within the top and mova le with respect to the o ening, an arm also within the top, said arm eing pivotally connected by one end to the platform, a curved guide carried by the top and provided with a stop, the other end of the arm having a sliding and pivotal engagement with the guide, said arm being bodily movable with the platform, and a connection between the lid and arm for moving the arm in the guide and against the stop and for rocking the arm about the stop to raise and support the platform when the lid is raised.

8. A machine cabinet, a machine bearing platform pivotally mounted thereon to raise and lower therein, a triangular arm mounted therein having at one corner a sliding pivotal connection with the cabinet, being connected at another corner with the under side of the platform, and means for actuating said arm and thus raising the platform connected to said arm at the third corner.

9. In a machine cabinet, a top having an opening therein, a machine supporting top portion movably mounted thereon to be raised from a position below said top to a position within said opening, a supplemental top portion pivotally mounted on said cabinet, an arm pivoted to said cabinet and connected to said supplemental portion, and an element on the supporting portion positioned to engage said arm to move said supplemental portion into operative position as the supporting portion rises.

10. In a machine cabinet, a top having an opening therein, a machine supporting top portion hinged therein at one side thereof and adapted together with the machine base late to partially close said opening, means or raising and lowering said supporting portion and base plate, an extension piece hinged to said top at the opposite side of said opening and adapted to complete the closure of said opening, an arm pivoted to said cabinet, a link connecting one end of said arm with said extension piece, and an element on the supporting portion positioned to engage said arm to move said extension piece into closing position as the supporting portion and base plate rise to a like position.
