APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10 1905.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV BAURMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO ILLINOIS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; WHITE SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CLEVE- LAND, OHIO, AND DAVIS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF DAYTON,
OHIO.
SEWING-MACHINE CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Original application filed August 8, 1902, Serial No. 118,892. Divided and this application filed June 10, 1905. Serial No. 264,667.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAv BAURMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The present application is a division of my application filed August 8, 1902, Serial No.
The present invention relates to what is known in the art as a lift and drop head cabinet, in which the machine head is mounted upon a platform hinged at one side of an opening through the table-top, so that it may be placed in horizontal position in said opening for supporting the machinehead in position for use or lowered to permit x the machine-head to sink through said opening and into a space provided for it below the table-top, where it may be concealed and protected when-out of use.
The invention relates more particularly to that-subclass of cabinets of the class already described, known as automatic lift and drop head cabinets, in which the position of the hinged platform is controlled by an extension-leaf which is hinged to the table-top so that when in one position it forms an extension thereof and when in another position it covers the opening aforesaid, suitable connections between the extension-leaf and plat form being used.
I desire to have it understood, however, that the invention of the present application does not in any way relate to the character or construction of the mechanism connecting the extension-leaf and hinged platform, said mechanism being the subject of my pending application filed August 8, 1902, Serial No. 118,892, of which the present application is a division.
I desire to have it understood also that the present invention is not limited to an automatic lift and drop head sewing-machine cabinet, as some of its features may be used without the automatic features, as will appear hereinafter.
According to the present invention the hinged platform is made of two partsviz., a main part, which constitutes the platform proper and upon which the machine-head is directly mounted, and a narrow wing or leaf operatively related to the free side of the platform proper and cooperating therewith when in horizontal position to close the opening in the table-top. This hinged leaf sometimes has considerable pressure put upon it, and when sustained only by hin es connecting it with the free side of the p atform this pressure strains the hinges and causes the leaf to sag.
The object of the present invention is to prevent this sagging of the leaf and to firmly support it so that it cannot yield under the pressure put upon it in ordinary use. To this end. I provide means operatively connecting the free side of the main platform and the leaf, so that the latter is compelled to partake of the movement of the former, and in addition thereto I provide a rest for the free side of the leaf when it is in horizontal position, said rest being combined with a guide which guides the leaf in its lift and drop movements and directs it onto the rest.
To these ends the invention consists in the features of novelty that are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a sewing-machine cabinet embodying the invention, the plane upon which the section is taken being indicated by the line 1 1, Fig. 2, and an intermediate portion of the cabinet being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.
The table-top may be of customary or of any desired construction and has through it an openin 1. As shown in the drawings, it consists o a rectangular table-top proper, 2, and a rectangular frame 3, secured to the top of the part 2. The parts 2 and 3 may be con sidered the table.top for the purposes of this application, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not limited to a table-top of any particular construction. To the frame 3 a leaf 4 is connected by hinges 5, so that when in one position it closes the opening 1 and when in another position it forms the customary extension of the tabletop. To the leaf 4 is connected at 6 one end of a chain 7, the other end of which is attached to a bracket 8 on the main portion 9 of the hinged platform already referred to. It will be understood that between its points of attachment to the extension-leaf 4 and the platform 9 the chain 7 passes over suitablyarranged pulleys, so that when the extension-leaf is opened the platform 9 Wlll be lifted to horizontal position in the opening 1, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when closed will permit the platform to swing downward to a position below the table-top, as shown by full lines. At one of its sides the platform 2 is hinged to the tabletop at one side of the opening 1, as shown at 10, and at its free side it is connected by hinges 11 to one side of a strip or leaf 12,
which cooperates with the platform proper and when the latter is in horizontal position completes the closure of the opening 1, as indicated by dotted lines. In the lift and drop movements of the platform the free side of the hinged leaf 12 is supported and guided by a stationary inclined guide 13, which may be supported in any desired manner. This guide inclines from bottom to top toward the side of the opening in the table-top opposite that at which the platform is hinged and terminates at its upper end in a curvature 14, proceeding in the same direction, whereby the free side of the leaf is directed into said opening in the table-top and onto a horizontal rest 15. The guide and rest, with its curved portion 14, are shown in the drawings as being made of separate pieces; but it will be understood that functionally they are in fact a single element.
As shown in the drawings, the free side of the hinged leaf is supported by the guide 13 through the medium of a stud 16 projecting from its end.
' site the curvature 14.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described the combination with the table-top having an opening through it, a platform hinged at one side of said opening, a hinged leaf adapted to cover said opening, and means for transmitting movement from said hinged leaf to said platform, of a leaf operatively connected to the free side of the platform, a rest for the free side of said leaf, and a stationary guide fixed to the cabinet and engaging the leaf for automatically directing its free side onto the rest, substantially as described.
2. In a sewing-machine cabinet the combination with the table-top having an opening therethrough, of a platform hinged to the top at one side of said opening to swing from a position below said opening to a position partially closing-said opening, a leaf adapted to coact with said platform and complete the closure of said opening, means whereby said platform when swung actuates said leaf, and an inclined guide fixed below the top of the table in position to engage said leaf and guide the same from a position below the opening to a horizontal position within the opening, substantially as described.
3. In a lift and drop head sewing-machine cabinet the combination with a table having an opening through it, of a machine-head platform hinged to said table Within said opening at one side thereof and adapted to close said opening or to move below it, said platform consisting of two hinged portions which fold in the ,drop movement of the platform and thereby reduce its width when lowered, and a stationary guide, below the tabletop, inclined from bottom to top toward the side of said opening opposite that at which the machine-head platform is hinged and terminating at its upper end, adjacent to the table-top, in a curvature in the same direction, whereby the free side of the hinged leaf is directed into the opening in the table-top and when nearing its uppermost position is di rected into a horizontal position within said opening, substantially as described.
