JOI-IN CUBER AND ANTON HACKENBROCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
ASSIGNORS TO F. PATZACK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A COR- PORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SEWING-MACHINE TABLE OR CABINET HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,042, dated September 30, 1902.
Application led October 19, 1901. Serial No. 79,190. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t nuty concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN CUBER and AN- TON HACKENBROCH, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing Machine Table or Cabinet Heads, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a fulll and complete description, sufficient to enable Vthose skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.
This invention relates to sewing-machine tables and cabinets v known as drop-leaf cabinets in the art`that is, cabinets provided with a hinged base-board for the sewing-machine to be used therewith, such baseboard arranged to be dropped on its hinges,
thereto, below the top of the sewing-machine table or cabinet and so that a top-leaf to such table or cabinet may be closed over the machine.
The object of this invention is to obtain a sewing-machine table or cabinet of the kind known in the art as a drop-leaf which will be simple in its construction, durable, and automatic in action, so that when the top-leaf thereof is open the base-board for the sewing-machine will be brought into a horizontal plane in position so that the sewing-machine thereon lnay be used.
A further object of thisinvention isto obtain a sewing-machine table or cabinet of the kind named wherein when the same is closed a chamber will be secured which is to a large extent dust-proof and in which chamber the sewing-machine will be contained.
We have illustrated a sewing-machine-table head embodying our invention in the drawings hereinbefore referred to, andJ in Which Figure 1 is a top plan viewof a sewing-,machine table embodying the invention withv the top-leaf thereof open, such top-leaf having one end thereof broken away and the top of the table also having the several edges thereof broken-away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on 5o line 2 2 of Fig. 1, viewed in the direction intogether with the sewing-machine attached.
\ dicated by the arrows, of one corner of the base-board of the sewing-machine table and of a leaf attached thereto, showing the manner of such attachment. Fig. 3 isa sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. l viewed in the direct/ion indicated by the arrows, the broken lines in Fig. 3 indicating the top leaf of the sewing-machine table and the levers connected thereto i'n the position assumed by such parts during the operation of opening up the sewing-machine table for use'and also indicating the base-board of the sewing-machine in a raised position, permitting inspection of the under side thereof and of the under side of the sewing-machine secured to same line as Fig. 3 is viewed with the topleaf of the sewing-machine table closed and the sewing-machine base-board (hereinafter termed the base-board turned down. Fig. 5 is a view in section, showing the swinging leaf in elevation at right angles to that shown in Fig. 4.
A reference-letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part throughout the several iigures of the drawings wherever the saine appear.
A is atop-leaf of the sewing-machinetable head embodying our invention. ct ct are the hinges by means of which such top-leaf is attached to the Stationary leaf or board B thereunder, and A' A are grooves in top-leaf A and in leaf B, in which the levers I I (hereinafter described) are contained when the sewing-machine table is open for use ofthe sewing-machine therein contained.
B is a leaf or board rigidly attached to tabletop C. Leaf or board B is provided with a rectangular aperture b therein, in which ap# erture the base-board D and leaf D of such base-board loosely iit when top-leaf A is open and such machine-board D' and leaf D' are in 'a'horizontalpositiom so that the sewing-Inachine Vattached to such base-board may be used.
E E are broken lines, Fig. l, indicating a sewing-machine on base-board D.
base-board D turns.
` Leaf D' is attached to base-board D by such base-board. Fig. 4 is a view on the F Fare the pivotal hinges on which the IOO means of the pivotal hinges G G. Hinge G comprises strap g, attached to the end edges of the leaf D', as by screws g g', the casting g2, which is attached to the end edges of the base-board D, as by screws g4 g4,and the pivot g3, connecting the strap g to casting g2.
g5 is a line indicatingashoulder in casting g2, against which shoulderl the upper edge of the strap g on the part thereof prolonged beyond the pivot g3 (marked g) may come in contact when the base-board D is in a sub-` aperture b in such leaf at the side edgesthereof. The levers I I rest on the brackets K K. The shape of the levers I I and brackets K K and the relative position of such levers to the top-leaf A and the brackets K K are such that when the leaf A is opened into substantially a horizontal plane the upper su rface of such levers are in substantially the same plane as the upper surface of the leaf A, with the levers restingin the grooves a/ a', respectively, and the base-board B is so related to such parts that at such time the baseboard is in a horizontal plane in aperture b in leaf B.
L is a casting attached to one edge of the base-board G, as by screws l l. Casting L rests on connecting-rod H, and as such rod H is lowered by the closing of the leaf A the side or edge of base-board D to which such casting L is attached (being the side or edge of base-board D which is opposite to pivotal hinges F F) falls therewith, so that when such leaf A is closed-that is, in substantially the position thereof illustrated in Fig.4-the baseboard D is in position so that a sewing-machine attached thereto is beneath the under surface of such leaf A.
M, Fig. 4, is a bottom board forming, when taken in connection with the ends N N, side M', and the base-board D, a chamber which is comparatively dust-proof and in which chamber the sewing-machine secured on the baseboard is at such time as top-leaf A is closed contained. The leaf A forms a cover to the aperture b when such leaf is closed. O is a stop on bottom board M, against which stop the eastingL and base-board D1 or one thereof, may rest when the leafA is closed and the sewing-machine secured on the base-board D is lowered, as above described.
The sewing-machine secured on the baseboard D is so placed that the front thereof is adjacent to the side of the table embodying this invention, which is marked P in Fig. l.
Q Q are holes in base-board D, through y trated in Figs. 1 and 3.
rod H, as last above described, draws such which the belt ofthe sewing-machine attached to such base-board may pass.
'lhe operation of the sewing-machine table embodying this invention is: The several parts being in the position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the top cover or leaf A is opened by being turned on its hinges a a into substantially the position thereof illustrated in Figs. l and 3. The turning of the topleaf A from the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 4 to such open position, as illustrated in Figs. l and 3, draws the levers I I over the brackets K K from the position of such levers illustrated in Fig. 4 into the position thereof illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, thereby raising the connectingrod H from the position thereof shown in Fig. 4 to the position thereof illus- The raising of the connecting-rod H along the under side of casting L and at the same time raises such casting from the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 4 into the position thereof illustrated in side elevation in Fig. 3, and as such casting L is attached to the base-board D, as heretofore described, such base-board is turned on the pivotal hinges F F thereof from the suspended position (illustrated in Fig.4) into substantially a horizontal position, as illustrated in Figs. l and 3.
lVhen the top-leaf A is closed from the position thereof illustrated in Figs. l and 3 of the drawings into the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the last hereinbefore-described operation is reversed and the base-board D, together with the sewingmachine thereon, is lowered beneath the top of the sewing-lnachine table embodying the invention, the base-board D being in substantially the position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, with the leaf Dl attached to baseboard D in substantially a horizontal plane.
lhe part L, hereinbefore referred to as a casting, constitutesacurved bracket on the under side of the base-board D at the edge thereof opposite to the edge adjacent to which the pivotal hinges F F are placed.
