COMBINED DESK-LIDHINGE AND SUPPORT.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,309, dated January 11, 189B. Application filed April 9, 1897. Serial No. 631,457. (No model.)

Beit known that I, FRED lV. TOBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin a Combined Desk- Lid Hinge and Support, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined desk-lid hinges and. supports and said invention consists in combining with the hinge of the desklid a link adapted to operate automatically and a slide for supporting the lid of the desk when the same is open, said link lying iiush with the bottom of the desk and with the upper surface of the lid, leaving no slot or open space upon the desk when the lid is opened, the operative link being pivoted to the lid of the desk atvits front end and its rear end being pivoted to a lever in such a manner that when the lid is raised the front end of the link is raised and the rear end is carried downwardly on the curve by vmeans of a lever.
The invention further consists in the novel i construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The objects of my invention are to operate the desk-lid slide with the least possible friction and to give the desk, when the lid is opened, a finished appearance. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l shows a vertical sectional view of a desk at a point through the desk-top, sh0wing the desk-slide-operative mechanism in side elevation. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the channeled hinge which attaches the desklid to the desk and also the position of the operative link and the upper end of the lever as the same would appear when the lid of the desk is let down. Fig. 3 shows a sectional view on lthe same line as is shown in Fig. l and diiers therefrom only in illustrating a inodiiied form of the connection between the free end of the lever and the desk-slide. In Fig. l the solid line shows the desk-lid closed, and in Fig. 3 the desk-lid open. Fig. i shows a side elevation of the lever removed for the purpose of showing the slot through which channeled so as to allow the connecting-link i D to lie flush with the upper surface of the desk-bottom B and the lid A when the lid is opened, rthe position being shown by solid lines in Fig. 3. The lid-hinges may be constructed in anysuitable manner; but I pre fer the construction shown in Fig. 2, P being the wing of the hinge which is secured to the lid, and R the wing of the hinge which is secured to thevdesk-top B. Instead of pivoting the link D directly to the lid A, I prefer to pivot it to the hinge, as shown by Gin Figs. l and 3. I also prefer to use the plate Q in order to furnish a pivotal bearing for the upper end of the lever.
E represents the lever, pivoted at M to the plate Q or to the deskbottom B. The link D is pivotedto the leverE at Il, being a point intermediate the two ends of the lever F.. The other end of the lever F., in the example of my invention shown in Fig. l, is pivoted at I to another link F, the link F being pivoted to the movable slide-support C at the point J. Instead' of pivoting the lower end of the lever F. to a link and by such link attaching the same to the slide a slot (shown in Fig. 3 by L) may be used, and the pivot at the free end or lower end of the lever F. will then slide Within thevslot L, and if found desirable this pivot may be provided with an antifriction-roller, or the antii'riction-roller may be dispensed with.
' In Fig. 1 the solid lines show the desk-lid closed, and the dotted lines show the desk-lid partially open.
In Fig. 3 the solid lines show the position of the parts with the desk-lid open, while the dotted lines show the position with the desklid closed.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Let the lid A be closed, as shown in Fig. l. Now by opening the lid the link D is carried backward with the lid, the same being pivoted thereto. The lever E turns upon its pivot M and by means of its connection with the slide-support C carries or draws outs IOC Ward the slide C until, when the lid has reached the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3, the link D lies in the channel of the hinge and entirely fills the space in the desk-bottom B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, leaving a perfectly smooth upper surface for the deskbottoin, thereby preventing any article from falling into the operative parts of the mechanism which moves the desk-slide. In closing the slide or lifting the lid from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown by solid lines in Fig. l, as the lid is lifted the end of the link D, pivoted at G, is raised, While its opposite end is lowered, being guided downwardly and backwardly on the curve by means of the leverE, which leverEby means of its connection with the desk-slide C drives the desk-slide C back to the position shown by the solid lines in Fig. l. Thus the deskslide C is moved automatically by the movement of the desk-lid, and its movement is precisely the same whether the connection between the lever E and the slide C is made by the link F or by means of a pivot and slot L.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented., and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a desk and a hinged lid therefor', of a sliding lid-support, a lever pivoted at its upper end to the deskbottom and at its lower end connected with the sliding support, and a link pivoted at its upper end to the lid at a point above the hingejoint and at its lower end to the said leverat a point intermediate the ends of the latter, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a desk and a hinged lid therefor, of a sliding lid-support, a lever pivoted at its upper end to the deskbottom, a link pivoted at one end tothe lower end of said lever and at its opposite end pivoted to the sliding support, and a link pivotedat its npper end to the lid at a point above the hinge-joint and at its lower end to the lever at a point intermediate the ends of the latter, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the desk-lid, a deskbottom hinged to said lid, a link, D, a lever, E, a link, F, and a slide, C, said link D being pivoted at one end to the desk-lid at the other end of the lever E, said lever E being pivoted at the top to the desk-bottom at M and connected by the pivoted link F to the slide C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
