Description

(No Model.) E WERNER;-
' 4 EASE-L. No. 294,941, Patent-ed Mar. 11, 1884..
rricn.
PATENT EMTL \VERNER, 'OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,941, dated March 11, 1884.
Application filed December 20, 1883.
a To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL WERNER, a citi-- zen of theUnited States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Easels, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification Y and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 3 are rear views of an easel embodying my invention, the si-me being respectively opened and closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly sectional in line as w, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion enlarged in line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a portion enlarged in line 2 z, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of a portion enlarged in line or as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of an easel formed of a prop, which is connected with laterally-movable legs by means of ahinge which is attached to a stationary piece between the top of the legs, and provided with wings, with which the legs are pivotally connected, and with a shoulder for supporting said prop when the easel is unfolded, whereby an inexpensive, light, durable, and easilybperated easel is produced, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the legs of the easel, and B the prop thereof, the latter being fitted between the former and connected therewith by means of a hinge, O, and screws D. The upper inner corners of the legs A are chainfered, as at a a, and the screws D are passed horizontally into the legs and form pivots or axes for said legs, whereby they may be turned laterally and opened, and thus abut against the sides of the upper portion of the prop B. The prop is divided, as at b, and the upper part is firmly connected with the upper butt of the hinge O, and the lower part is firmly connected with the lower butt of said hinge. The upper butt of the hinge is extended laterally, forming Wings 0 0, through which the screws D are passed, for connecting and pivoting the tops of the legs' A with the hinge. The lower butt of the hinge has cast with or otherwise secured to it a stop,
E, which extends upwardly above the pintle (No model.)
or knuckle of the hinge and faces the upper butt, and is separated therefrom suchdistance that when the prop is moved out rearward to the position required for sustaining the easel said stop E strikes the upper stationary butt of the hinge and limits the motion of the prop, besides retaining the prop in the aforesaid position, the latter feature obviating braces, &c.,
between the same, the several parts thus folding flush and producing comparatively a flat piece, said parts being prevented from separation by a suitable catch and dowel-pins or other means, such as a strap or cord.
While I have described the prop as divided at b, the upper piece thereof is in reality independent of the lower one, its object being the presentation of a stationary part for the attachment of the top butt of the hinge, and an abutment for the adjacent ends of the side legs.
In lieu of screws D, I may employ bolts and nuts or rivets, which accomplish the same result as the former.
' Having thus described my invention, what I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In an easel, laterally-movable legs, a stationary piece between the upper ends thereof, and ahinged prop, in combination with ahinge, one butt of which is formed with laterallyextending wings, which are attached to the legs by pivotal screws or bolts, and connected. at the top with said stationary piece, the other butt being connected at the bottom with the hinged prop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an easel, a prop and laterally-movable side legs, and stationary piece between the top of the legs, in combination with a hinge having one butt formed with wings attachable to the legs by pivotal screws or bolts, and the other butt connected with a stop which is adapted to abutmagainst the first-named butt when the prop is unfolded, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The prop, side legs, and stationary top piece, in combination with a hinge formed with wings and a stop, the upper inner eorners or ends of the side legs being chamfered,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EVIL \VERNER.
