To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HENRY L. ADZIT and PETER LINDQUIST, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and we' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to improvements in folding chairs, and its object is to provide a chair that will fold wholly within the plane of the outer members of the frame; to provide a chair that is strong, durable and cheaply made; to provide a chair in which the seat member may be folded up against the back without folding the legs; to provide a chair in which the seat will be automatically folded by the folding operation of the back legs and locked thereby in folded position, and to provide a de vice with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1. is a perspective of a chair embodying our invention, as it appears opened out for use; Fig. 2. the same in vertical section; Fig. 3. the same as Fig. 2, partly folded; Fig. 4. the same fully folded; Fig. 5. an enlarged detail shown in rear elevation; Fig. 6. an enlarged detail in elevation, with portions broken away; Fig. 7. a sectional detail on line 7-7 of Fig. 5; Fig. 8. the same on the line 88 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 9, a perspective showing the seat folded and the legs opened out.

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.

1 represents each of two outer members preferably consisting of straight strips of hard wood arranged parallel to each other and suitably spaced apart, the upper part thereof constituting the sides of the back and the lower part of the same forming the front legs, as at 1*. At a suitable distance from the lower end of said members is a tie-rod 3 on which is mounted the rear legs 2 which legs extend upward above the rod 3 and support the seat 4, as at 2 This rod is pivoted in the outer members by screws 12 inserted in the axis of the rod and extending therein through. the rear legs whereby the rod is strengthened at the ends. Said rear legs are spaced apart from the side members 1 a short distance to receive therebetween links 6 each having a slot 6 therein in which slot is slidable a bolt 8 extending through the upper part 2, and to prevent the pivot bolt from splitting the same, a clip or band 7 is provided through which the bolt 8 extends. The links 6 extend rearward and upward from the bolt 8 and are pivotally attached to the side members by rivets or bolts 13, and thus limit the opening out of the legs, and when folded the links will swing parallel with the side members. These rivets or bolts 13 also serve as supports for the seat member l, which is pivoted thereon by means of a fiat metal strip 5 secured in a groove within the rear edge of the seat. The ends 5 of this strip are also bent upward at right angles and pivoted to the side members 1, by the rivets 13.

At the top the side members are connected by a back strip 11, and lower down a broad thin strip 10 also connects the side members to form a back rest, the latter being located near the rear edge of the side members to permit the seat member 4., to fold up within the plane of the sides in front of the back rest 10 and parallel therewith, for which purpose the pivots 13 are located near the rear of the side members 1.

When opened out for use, the links 6 limit 'the opening of the legs and bring the upper extension 2 in proper position to engage the under side of the seat 4, and support the same in a horizontal position. The pivots 5 being above the plane of the seat the latter rises out of the way of the upper ends of the legs 2 when turned upward, and also moves forward at the bottom so that it comes substantially parallel with the back rest 10; in line with the side members and wholly between the same, and when the legs 2 are folded they are in line with the seat and side members and also wholly between the side members, and the links 6 are also in line with the side members and wholly between the same. The entire device thus folds wholly between the side members and in parallel lines, a result peculiar to the described construction, and also very desirable and useful enabling the chairs to be piled one upon the other very compactly and safely. The seat 4: can also be turned upward against the back member 10 as occasion requires without folding the legs, and the chair otherwise remains in open position. In fully folding the chair the foot of the operator can be placed on the crossbar 9, connecting the legs 2 near the lower ends thereof, and by grasping the back member 11, and pulling upward on the same the legs 2 will turn to the folded position, and the extensions 2* will automatically force the seat upi 'ard to the closed position. It will be noted that the pivot'of the seat, when the device is folded, is at the rear of the seat and the rear legs in line with the seat and engaging the lower edge of the same, whereby the seat is locked in closed position by the legs, and that all of the parts are arranged parallel.

Obviously the link may be placed below the pivot of the legs, or such link applied to the device as shown, as preferred.

hat we claim is L'A folding chair comprising side members forming the front legs and the sides of the back, a seat pivoted between said side members above the plane of the seat and near the rear of said members and also adapted to fold between the same, and legs pivoted to the side members and adapted to fold in line with the bottom of the seat and engage the rear edge of the same when the device is closed, and to engage the seat and support the same when in open position.

2. A folding chair, comprising side members forming the front legs and the sides of the back, a seat adapted to fold between the side members, a strip of metal attached to the rear of the seat and extended upward at the ends at each side of the seat, pivots c011- necting the said ends to the side members above the plane of the seat and toward the rear ofthe said members, legs pivoted to the side members and adapted to support the seat in open position and to fold" between the said members in line with the seat and engage the rear edge of the same in closed position and links to limit the movement of the legs foldable in line with the side members and between the same and the legs.

3. A folding chair comprising side members spaced apart, a seat pivoted between the same to move bodily upward and between the side members, when folded and to move bodily downward when opened out and legs pivoted ,to engage the under side of the seat and support the same when opened and to fold in line with the seat and engage the rear edge thereof to lock the same in closed position.

A folding chair comprising, side members spaced apart and forming the front legs and the sides of the back, a seat, a strip of metal inserted in the rear edge of the seat and bent upward at right angles at the ends, pivots connecting said ends to the side members above the plane of the seat and near the rear of said members, a back rest connecting said members near the rear thereof, a rod connecting said members below the seat and rear legs mounted on the rod, and engaging the under side. of the seat at the upper end in open position to support the seat, andfoldable in line with the seat and engaging the rear edge of the sameto lock the seat in folded position.
