Be it known that I, ,CHARLES M. FORD,-

citizen of the United States, residing at Castalia, in the county oflflrie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new7 and useful Improvements iii Sled-Runners, of which tlie following is a specification.

.liy invention relates to improvements in sled construction and has special reference to the formation of the runners and knees. The chief objects of my invention are to .provide a sled ruimer the main portion of which can be formed of a single piece, prefs erably of sheet steel, 4so 'as' to produce a' structure of light weight and yet having the requisites of lightness, economy of construction, `simplicity andstrength.

Other objects of my invention are to supply supporting .knees of improved construction that will give the required strength" with a minimum of weight and to enable the pai-ts to be assembled with little labor and with the use ot' ordinary tools.

.l further advantage lies in the opportunity to use short piecesof timber for ill`- ing purposes thus econoinizing the material.

I accomplish the above and other minor .olijects by t-he use ofthe appliance villustrated in the. accompanying drawing Which'forms a part of thi-s specification and in whicli:- Figure 1 is a side view of a bob sled em! bod'ying iny improvements; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of'Fig.V 1, and Fig. 3 is'a rear elevation ofen single runner.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the

Since the open side of the channel of the runner is uppermost and therefore liable to become filled with snow and ice or other foreign substances which would render it unsightly I provide a filling 13 of any suitterial pieces of wood being usually the most desirable fon that pui-pose, and as the lengths will be comparatively short there willl be an economy in the materials used. Besides preventing the accumulation of dirt vthis filling will give a finish to the inembei and also add to the strength of the channel by furnishing a backing for the channel steel which is made as light as will be consistent with the needed strength. For this reason it is necessary to reinforce the iuidersurface of the runner with a shoe 14 which is prefen ably made of cast iron or similar metal of suliicient thickness to withstand -the frictional wear. This shoeinay be secured in any desired manner to the face of the runner, a ver f convenient method being the employment of screws 15 inserted in countersunk holes in the face of the shoe and pene-- trating the channel steel to engage the wood` backing 18, thus serving the double purpose of securing the shoe and backing in position..
