RUNNEB END GR CROOK FOR SLEDS.
Application filed March 7, 19153.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. SU'r'rnR, citizen of the United States, residing at Vanlue, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Runner Ends 01 Crooks for Sleds, of which the following is;
a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a runner end or crook for sleds and is designed more particularly for that type of sled known as a mud boat.
The object of the invention is to provide a crook which can be applied to the front end of a straight runner, thus enabling the runner to be made from a plank with a minimum of work and expense; further, to provide such a crook which will be very strong and can be rigidly secured to the runner and to the upper structure of the sled.
In the accompanying drawingsflFigure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section,- of a shoe or crook embodying my invention showing the same applied to the endllof the runner; and Fig. 2 is a section taken transversely of the same.
In these drawings 1 have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the crook as formed of a single piece of sheet metal which, inthe present instance, is bent into the desired sha e. It will be obvious, however, that theflevice can be built up of more than one piece of metal or that it can be formed in other manners than by bending. It will be noted that the crook comprises along curved body portion 1 having the shape which it is desired to impart to the forward portion of the runner. This curved body portion is provided along each side with an upwardly extending flange 2 which gives strength to-" the crook and also prevents the-fac r-fumulation of mud or the like on the top -of the runner. The rear portion of the crook 1s tion of the runner 4 and to be rigidly secured thereto. The width of the crook is substantially equal to the width of the runner and, consequently,

to. Preferably, those portions of the flanges at the rear end of the crook extend upwardly for a considerable distance to aifor ample means for fastening the end of the crook to the runner. At its forward and upper end the crock is provided with a flat portion 3 to receive the forward end of the frame members of the sled. As here shown this support is formed by bending the end portion of the body rearwardly so that the frame member can rest upon it and be bolted thereto. The crook is also bent to form an upwardly extending longitudinal rib 5 which is disposed centrally between the flanges 2, and serves to materially strengthen the article.
It will be apparent that by providing this metallic crook I am enabled to build a sled runner by combining a straight plank of thereby eliminating the necessity of providing the end of the beam or timber with the crook and not only saving a great deal of material and expense but greatly reducing the labor involved in building the runner. built by the farmer who uses the same, and, by the use of this crook which can be furnished at a low cost, the farmer can very quickly and very easily build his runners. Little or no mechanical skill is required and the difficulties which are encountered in giving the proper shape to the wooden runner where the same is provided with a curved portion are entirely avoided.
vVhile I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and modifications will occur in the art.
Having, thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture,
to a person skilled a crook for straight and the central portion thereof is a sled runner formedfrom a single piece of adapted to extend beneath the adjacent porsheet metal and comprising a body portion bent about a longitudinal axis to form a structure U-shaped in cross section to receive the end of the runner and to provide strengthening flanges and guards at the lat eral edges of said body portion, said body portion also having an inwardly bent part Mud sleds are usually.
