Description

UNITED STATES RICE WEBB, OF STAR PRAIRIE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,804, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it `known that I, RICE WEBB, of Star Prairie, in the county of St. Croix and State of NViscousin, have invented a new an d useful Improvement in Gutters, Svc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved cutter. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved cutter or sleigh, which shall be simple in construction, light, strong, and durable, and easier for the rider than cutters and sleighs constructed in the ordinary manner 5 and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the cutter or sleigh, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the runners, which are made of bar-iron bent into the desired form. B are the raves, knees, or braces, which are also made of bar-iron bent into the required from, and the ends of which are bolted to the runners A. To the upper part or bend of the raves, knees, or braces B are attached, or in them are formed, bearings for the rounded ends or journals ofthe beam O, the ends of which are secured by nuts. D are braces or strengthening rods, the rear endsl of which are secured to the forward arms of the raves, knees, or braces B, and the forward ends of which are secured to the forward or curved part of the runners A. E is the box or body, which should be made in the ordinary form of a cutter or sleigh-box. To the rear part of the bottom of the box E are attached two cross pieces, F, at such a distance apart as to receive the beam C between them. G is a rod, the rear end of which passes through the cross piece F, close to the lower side of the bea-m O, so as to securely fasten the box E to the said beam O. The rod G extends forward to the forward end of the box E, to which it is secured by passing through a cross piece attached to the bottom of said box, or by sta-ples, eyebolts, or other suitable fastenings. The forward end of the rod G is bent upward, and is secured to the draft-bar H, which is attached to the upper part of the rininers A, and to which the thills or tongue are attached in the ordinary manner. rllhe rod G thus supports and secures the forward part ofthe box E. I are the shoes, which are attached to the runners A in the ordinary manner. The runners A are connected with the draft-bar H, as well as to the beam C, by journals, so as to form movable joints.
By this construction either end of either runner lmay rise to pass over unevenness or obstructions in the roadway while the other runner may be running along a smooth surface, thus causing the cutter or sleigh to run much easier, both for the horse or horses and the rider, than cutters or sleighs constructed in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved cutter or sleigh, consisting of the runners A, raves, knees, or braces B, beam C, braces D, box or body E, cross-bars F, rod Gr, and draft-bar H, said parts being constructed and operating in connection with each other substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
RICE WEBB.
