Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
SANDERS MORRILL, OF VIENNA, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,660, dated February 11, 1873.
` of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Sleighs, of which the following is a specification:
This improvement relates to the construction of light and heavy sleighs; and it consists in the combination, with the sleigh-bars, side standards, and runners, of an elastic steel brace, secured to the under side of the bar, to the inner faces of the standards, and to the runners, the brace being seniicircular, or approaching that form.
In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation, showing the application of the brace to a sleigh-bar, standards, and runners. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the standards with portions of the brace, bar, an d runner attached. Fig. 3 shows, in side and top views, the portion of the runner to which the ends ot' the brace and standard are secured.
Similarletters of reference indicate likeparts in the several figures.
A represents a sleigh-bar, which may be of the usual or any suitable construction, resting on and secured to the upper ends of the curved side standards B B, which are made of wrought or malleable iron. The lower ends of the standards are slightly recessed, as shown in Figs. l and 2, to receive the runners C C, which are secured by bolts to the standards. D represents the elastic steel brace, which is made in about the form described, `to reach from runner to runner, with a wide curve up to the under side of the'bar. where, as also to the standards, it is secured by bolts. In the runners are formed mort-ises, to receive the ends ot' the brace, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and at a in Fig. 3. To further secure the attachment ofthe brace and standards to the runner, T- irons b, Fig. 3, are bolted to the innerfaces of the runners and brace.
course, made to exactly correspond, and the contact-faces are nicely Iinished, so as tomake a neat joint. In crosssection the standards and brace are made semielliptical or halfround, to give a finished appearance when secured together.
By the use of this braceu the parts of the sleigh are not only bound rigidly together, thus insuring durability and strength, but an easy elastic spring is given to the vehicle while in motion, which is not attainable with the ordinary construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lette-rs Patent, is-
The elastic steel brace, in combination with and secured to the standards, bar, and runners, substantially as herein described.`
In testimony that I claim the abovel have hereunto subscribed 'my name before two Witnesses.V
