HERMAN WETTSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUEtGLARsALARm.
Application filed Kay 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN WErrs'rErN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Bronx, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a burglar alarm of novel construction which may be readily attached to a door and which is set off by the door as the latter is being swung open. In this way timely warning of an attempted unauthorized entry is given before the latter is ellected.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bur lar alarm; Fig. 2 a similar view with the bell removed and showing the parts in a difierent position; Fig. 3 an end view of Fig.2, and Fig. 4 a cross section on line 14, Fig. 2.
A base plate 10, adapted to be screwed to a door frame 11, is provided with an arbor 12. On this arbor is l'ulcrumed a lever 13 bent twice at right angles, so as to be composed of a pair of wings projecting in parallel planes in opposite directions from a common stem, (Fig. 3). The inner of these wings is perl'orated for the reception oi arbor 12 by which it is pivoted to base plate 10 and is provided with a lug 14 engaged by a spring 15 coiled around the arbor. in abutment 16 o'nplate 10 is adapted to retain lever 13 in such a position that its outer wing extends at rightangles to the. door 17. The outer wing which is located 1n a )lane 111 iront ot the door is provided with a nger l8 whichis rennet-led to such wing by a spring-uni llueneed stop-hinge 19 that permits the ling r to be swung outward at an angle to lever with the lever. Lever 13, besides being free to s-\ log on arbor 12, has also a slight axial movement thereon, so as to be able to override abutment 16. By importing a substantial Z shape to lever 13, its inner wing will lind a bearing on base plate 10, to which it is l'ulrruined, while a clearance is obtained bo- I tween the (loo-r and the outer wing that permits the tilting of linger l8.

1 From the-upper edge of the central stem of l lever 13, there extends ail-integral prong or hammer 20 adapted to strike a locking pin 21 l influenced by a spring, '21, and arran ed within the casing 22 of a suitable alarm ell 23. This locking pin, when advanced,
crowds against the bent stem 24 of the clap per 25, and thus holds the same ofl'. ong 23.
1 When the locking pin is retracted, 51c cla per is released and will be actuated by t e alarm spring, (not shown), through a train of gearing 26 and an escapement wheel 27 coo erating with the anchor 28 of the clapper in t e usual manner.
Upon the central spindle 29 of the alarm bell there is rotatably mounted a shield 30 having a handle 31 which protrudes outwardly between casing 22 and bell 23. When the alarm is to be rendered inope'ra-. tive, shield 30 is, by its handle 31, so turned on spindle 29, as to become interposed be-- tween clapper 25 and bell 23, (Fig. 4).
In use, t 1e tenant, on departing, opens the door, sets lever 13 across the doo1;-opening, and on leaving closes the door behind him,
' (Fig. 1). This closing of the door can be accomplished without setting off the alarm, because finger 18 can swing outward 'freely on lever 13. the door, on swinging inward, will cause finger 18, by stop-bin e 19, to tilt lever 13 on arbor 12, and there ycause the. lever to override abutment 16. The lever being thus released, will, by spring 15, be projected upward, so that its ha1nmer20 strikes locking pin 21 and thus moves the same out of engagement with the clapper, to set off the alarm.
ll the tenant desires to remain at home, he
also swings the lever 13 across the door, so
that the latter will set off the alarm on being opened.
alarm, comprising a base wing, means for pivoting the inner wing to ll a person attempts to enter,
it will be seen that the alarm is of simple plate, a spring inlluenced lever ol substanw i tial ffi-sh'apo to 'lorm an inner and an outer.
the base plate, a finger, a stop hin e 0011- tween bell and clapper, substantially as" 10 nesting the finger to the outerwlng, an means on the lever; for releasing an alarm sounding means, substantially as specified.
